I just re watched the scene today and for some reason I read Matt as being pretty scared at being confronted by Fisk. He clenches his fist like he wants to start a fight right there, but he goes from super charming with Vanessa to his voice shaking and being obviously uncomfortable. He takes the first chance he can to get the hell out of there, too.

So I think it'd be pretty interesting to explore this prompt wth that in mind- he really, really doesn't want to be there at first, but he'll do anything to get what information he needs, even if it means pretending to be friendly with Fisk.

Completely agree with Matt's discomfort. He's already a soft-spoken guy, but he gets incredibly quiet and stoic in Fisk's presence: "We probably shouldn't be talking. I believe we're on opposite sides of a tenancy case." Just business...except it's not at all.

Aaaaiiiii yes

I have a thing for "people doing sex for a bunch of different reasons," and I think your reading is right - I read it as Matt being a) pissed off, b) terrified, c) really angry that's he's scared of Fisk, to the point where throwing up even the barest sham of civilized behavior is almost more than he can handle. To be completely honest - and hey! i could be overidentifying! - it looked like the behavior you get when you're unexpectedly confronted with a triggering thing and you're trying to cover up the massive adrenaline dump without alerting the general population.

(...Marvel is cool in that they'll acknowledge PTSD/trauma reactions in characters, although I don't think that's specifically been brought up in Daredevil in this way? but that's how i read the scene)

Re: Matt's handling of trauma- I think he basically channels it into anger. He goes out and beats the shit out of people at night and has obvious anger management issues that he just barely managed to contain during his day job. I think his frustration with how he's unable to be himself during the day because of his 'disability' coupled with his childhood trauma all contributed to his vigilantism.

He tries present it as wanting to do something about the crime in the city, but I don't think he was lying when he said he enjoyed hurting people. When he speaks to Father Lantam it's about the most honest we ever hear him. The guys got issues, is what I'm saying, haha.
