Little Fisk met little Matt

around the same age, same neighborhood, etc. just give these two a smidge of happiness and let them be friends and comfort each other about their home problems.

I thought they were very different ages? Cause they say something like, 50 years ago Fisk killed his dad, and Matt can only be around 30. Could be wrong though.

We see Fisk as a tween in the early to mid 70s, so he was born in the early 60s, making him mid-50s. Matt was blinded at 9 had time to learn Braille before his dad died, and had time to learn some impressive fight skills before Stick left, which was 20 years ago. I'd say he's about 32 in the show (but I have no idea why he entered law school at 27ish instead of 21-22, particularly considering that he'd likely have a free ride between his disability and his status as an orphan).

All that said, this is kinkmeme. AUs are a thing.

Most Columbia Law students do not go directly from college to law school. The average age at most law schools is nearer to 24. I'm not sure why you'd think he'd have a free ride being blind and an orphan at a private law school. Perhaps he'd receive scholarships from private and nonprofit actors given his excellent academic performance, but I don't think CLS would just waive tuition and fees. I'm genuinely interested in learning what made you think that (or being corrected if I'm wrong). TMYK and everything. :)

As for the characters' ages – I usually use the actors' ages as a guide. In this case, they would be 55 and 32. Like the anon above me said, though, AUs exist for a reason. :D

We don't know that he went to Columbia for undergrad, but if he did, all Ivy League schools waive tuition entirely for students from families below a certain income level. Columbia's current (since 2008) limit to completely waive tuition/room/board/mandatory fees is annual income of $60,000 or less, with lesser levels of assistance from the school itself for incomes up to $100,000.

Wards of the court (orphan or otherwise) have increased eligibility for federal financial aid (including loans and grants), additionally, they (obviously) don't have parents' incomes to consider when meeting financial limits on income-based aid.

Additionally, there are a LOT of private and public scholarships available to people with disabilities.

Lastly, with him having lived in a church-run orphanage, it's likely that he would have had access to aid from the church as well.

Certainly, he may not have sought any assistance. He is Jack Murdock's son, after all. But if he wanted help, it's incredibly unlikely that he wouldn't have been able to get a lot of it.

Columbia University (the college) is a separate entity from Columbia Law School. Nothing I wrote was in reference to funding his undergrad education or implied he attended Columbia for undergrad.

Law school, being a professional/postgraduate degree, is a completely different beast.

*shrugs*

NB: I just re-read what I wrote and it sounds really dismissive which is not what I intended.

My undergrad comment accounted for two sentences and I never claimed that you referenced it. It was PART of my reasoning behind his university education being covered. The rest of my comment applies to postgraduate education as well. While I have no experience with Columbia Law, many years ago I helped one of my best friends from high school navigate the financial aid process for undergrad and postgrad. She happens to live with totally blindness. My aunt worked in admissions at an Ivy League school (Vanderbilt). A good friend of the family worked in Disability Services at the same school. So I had access to a lot of great information. Maybe things have changed a lot since the mid to late 90s, or maybe Columbia is nothing like Vanderbilt. I don't know. And I'm done.
