Matt's favorite nun comes to visit

Let’s say there was one nun at the orphanage who Matt really bonded with. He came to see her as a mother, except he very carefully refused to think of her that way because he didn’t want to jinx it and make her leave like Stick.

She comes to visit and Matt is super excited and nervous. He wants to introduce her to his friends and show that he made something of himself and he’s just desperate to make her proud of him.

Gen or any pairing is fine. Bonus for Foggy or Karen POV.

There were two quick raps on the doorframe of his office. "Hey, Foggy?"

Foggy looked up to see Matt standing by the door, worrying the corner of his lip between his teeth. Nervous, and extremely uncharacteristically so. First reaction: Oh god, he's punctured a lung and he came over to tell me before he collapses in the hallway. Matt's face suddenly dropped. Second reaction: Oh god, he just read my mind. Fuck.

"Yeah?" he answered, trying to force his heart back into a normal rhythm. One day, he'll stop panicking about Matt's many mysterious miscellaneous injuries. One day, but not today.

"There's, uh. I have a... a friend who's visiting New York next week. I haven't seen her in a while, but I'd really like her to meet you and Karen. Do you mind if she comes by the office? It won't be for long. Just thought I'd..." Matt trailed off, gesturing at the office in general to finish the sentence.

"A friend?" Foggy couldn't help the way his eyebrows shot up. He had years of experience teasing Matt and he would never pass up a chance to do it again. "Like a sexy friend? Absolutely no worries at all. Just don't cry when I steal her heart away from you."

It was Matt's turn for his eyebrows to fly into space. "No! Not a friend like that. No, she's. Um. One of the nuns from St Agnes, actually."

"Oh! Oops, yikes." That was awkward. "Please pretend I never said that. Tell God I'm sorry." Once he got his tongue back into control, he went on. "Yeah, of course, bring her over! It's gonna be a party. I've always wanted to hear about the shenanigans of young Matt Murdock. I bet you were a real troublemaker."

It was genuine, and it was the right thing to say, because all the tension disappeared from Matt's shoulders and he threw his head back into a laugh. Foggy grinned and his heartrate flopped around just a little.

"Thanks, Foggy. You'll love her, I promise. I'll ask Karen too." Matt beamed the way Foggy hadn't seen for far, far too long, and turned to head back to his office.

Foggy watched him go, then got back to the file he was reading, with warm fuzzies still in his chest. Matt didn't talk about his childhood much - not that Foggy was surprised, after the few frankly heartbreaking conversations they'd had about it. Just the thought of how happy Matt had looked made him feel all mushy inside again.

He almost forgot about it until Wednesday morning, when Matt called to say he'd be a little late, then arrived with a tiny old woman at his elbow and the most adorable, bashful smile on his face. Karen beat Foggy to the door, so he rushed around to arrange some seats nicely in the cramped foyer space.

"Hello! You must be Sister Pauline," Karen greeted in her best voice, smoothing down her skirt. Oh good, Foggy wasn't the only one also nervous as heck.

"The one and only," Matt joked weakly, fidgeting with his cane before he left it leaning beside the door. "Sister Pauline, this is Karen and Foggy. Foggy, Karen, this is Sister Pauline."

"I've heard so much about you both," she said as she shook both their hands, with a little twinkle in her eye. "Only good things, of course." Foggy cracked up and by her side, the faintest blush crept to Matt's face.

Karen helped Matt lead her to one of the chairs - the comfiest one, of course, their lone waiting room-style single sofa - while Foggy bustled around collecting tea and coffee requests.

"We just started a few months ago," Foggy heard Matt explain, "It's not much yet, but it's ours."

OMG! I'm the OP and it was such a great surprise to see this on the WIP post. Thank you so much.

Matt is adorable, Sister Pauline is adorable, and I love Foggy's POV here. I love how Karen and Foggy are as nervous as Matt. This is so cute.

oh gosh, this is so cute! (also i really like foggy's automatic assumption that matt was talking about an ex-girlfriend or something, and then the awkward realization that no, he meant a nun and also kind of a mother-figure. whoops!)
