I didn't know I needed this until now.

In Greek mythology, Artemis is both the healer and the inflictor of plagues. It’s kind of a contradiction if you look at it wrong; a doctor injecting her patients with sickness and taking it away by turns. Like–how can anyone do that? Hold two parts of themselves together without hurting inside?

Claire didn’t understand it when she was eight, sitting on her aunt’s study floor and paging through a book of mythology, but she does now.

It’s like this: she knows how to break a bone because she knows how to mend one. And sometimes you get tired of seeing victims rolled in on gurneys, peppered with lead and splintered with rebar. Sometimes you think–you know, maybe. Maybe it’s better to step out there and do something about it.

She thinks Artemis would have understood that, too.

It’s night in New York City, and Claire gets wind of a drug ring. Wraps her hands in boxer’s tape, picks up her aluminum baseball bat and puts on her running shoes. They’re great, these shoes. Hot pink and kind of perfect in how un-Claire-like they are. They hide under her bed until she needs them.

(It figures that she doesn’t wear stars or stripes or armor like the knights of old–just cheap body armor and a battered pair of Nikes. Claire’s not up there in the sky with a million dollars. She’s not in some old news reel. She’s just herself, this heart, this breath, these two hands that break arms at the elbow.)

The problem starts when she gets to the base. It’s broken open, the door hanging pathetically off the hinges. Claire hefts her bat, squares her shoulders, and walks in.

There’s a man in there, and he’s the only one standing. He swings around when she comes in, and she amends her observation.

He’s the only one standing, barely.

“You look like shit,” she says.

“Who,” the man says. His eyes are covered by a black cloth. “Who are you?”

“I’m the Night Nurse,” Claire says. “Who the hell are you?”

“Are you here to finish the job?” he asks, and the weariness in his tone makes her ache.

“It looks like you beat me to the punch,” Claire says lightly, sweeping a hand around at all the unconscious drug smugglers. “So, no. Unless you’re one of them.”

“No,” the man says. He’s still breathing hard, and that’s definitely blood on his chin. Claire gestures to it.

“Broken tooth?”

“Bit my tongue.”

“Ah.”

Silence falls, heavy and cold, like wet sheets. The man’s ragged breathing is starting to sound an awful lot like cracked ribs. He wipes the blood off his chin with hands that are also bleeding.

“You know,” Claire says, “I’m pretty good with stitches.”

His head snaps up. Through the cloth, in this light, it’s hard to tell what his expression is.

“No way you’re getting home like that,” she says.

“I have before,” the man says.

It’s just her luck, isn’t it, that the only other vigilante in the neighborhood is stupid as shit. “Fast track to an early grave, if you ask me.”

“And you would know.”

“Yes,” Claire says, lifting her chin. “I would know.”

The man’s laugh breaks into pieces halfway through and he hunches over, white beneath the mask, one hand going to his side and trembling. Definitely cracked ribs.

“Come on,” Claire says, tired of this, “I’ll make coffee, we can talk about walking on the wrong side of the law.”

He smiles. It’s a nice look on him, despite the swollen lip and the bruises blossoming across his face. “Coffee, huh?”

“Unless you’re a tea person.”

He nods, a tiny thing, and starts to limp across the floor towards her. Claire meets him halfway, holding out an arm. He looks at her–looks at her left ear, actually, but that’s probably the concussion–and then rests his fingers on her elbow. Together, picking their way around unconscious criminals, the two of them make their way out the door, into the wet, windless night.

Claire knows this is stupid. He could be anyone. But she can handle a half-dead vigilante if she has to, and it she doesn’t, well–

Artemis rarely hunted alone. She’s coming to understand that, too.

Thank you! I don't know, Daredevil seems like a different paradigm than most of the MCU. Not a lot of money, not a lot of resources. It's interesting.

Wow ! I didn't expect this prompt to be filled so quickly. It's really an amazing fill too. I'm so happy about it, it's perfect. I like the attention put to details with her vigilante outfit.

I loved this sentence : "It’s just her luck, isn’t it, that the only other vigilante in the neighborhood is stupid as shit." It was so unexpected, it really made me laugh

The line about not hunting alone at the end made me think that Night Nurse/Claire is going to keep on collecting stray vigilantes until she can form a team of her own. Kind of like a low budget Avengers team (called the Hunters maybe, as a shortened version of Artemis' Hunters - idk if something like that already exist in the marvel universe) ...

I might be prompting for a follow up of this amazing fill there ;p

Oh and if anyone else want to write a fill for the prompt (long or short), I'll really be happy about it too !

Oh god. I would love a story about Claire Temple, Night Nurse, and all her stupid little ducklings. Maybe Jessica Jones and Luke Cage? And perhaps somehow Bucky Barnes ends up in Hell's Kitchen and finds himself inexplicably drawn to this gaggle of bloody-knuckled vigilantes, because they remind him of you-know-who?

(Somehow Kamala Khan and Gwen Stacy get mixed up in it, too, because of Reasons.)

YES absolutely ! I'm not familiar with the first two sorry but Kamala Khan, Bucky Barnes, Gwen Stacy, Matt Murdock and Claire Temple in the same team sounds absolutely amazing. I can already see the kind of dynamic the "Hunters" team would have :

- Claire/Night Nurse would be THE Boss/Leader since she's the one who started this. I can see her being exasperated over everything her team makes her live through (mostly Matt, although she's sure some of the stuff Kamala and Gwen got into will give her white hair)
- Matt/Daredevil is kind of like a co-captain/right-hand man. Claire and him have worked the longest together and it shows, when they partner up they are terrifying
- Bucky is the handler : at first he mostly trains the team and supervise stuff a little because he doesn't think it would be a good idea to go back to fight so soon after getting away from HYDRA ... He'll eventually start to fight again but with the Avengers (because of Steve mostly, also Sam and Natasha) and he won't abandon his role as the Hunters' handler either, he likes this little vigilante team too much
- Gwen/Spider-Gwen actually tracked Night Nurse down and basically forced her to interview her for a spot on the team on the spot. Claire quickly learned that Gwen is very determined and very smart, and also that having a science expert on the team is surprisingly helpful
- Kamala/Ms Marvel is kind of the baby of the team because she's the youngest, the rest usually try to protect her a little - She's close to Gwen because they are close in age but also surprisingly to Matt, they kind of bond over their struggle between their religions and their work as vigilantes

sorry for dumping all my headcanons here but i had to write them down

!!!!!!!! Times like these I wish I had an AO3 account, because this deserves, like, chapters.

Also: Steve and Sam *finally* getting a lead on Bucky, bursting into this crappy little apartment in Hell's Kitchen, only to find…well, what looks like a pizza party. A pizza party where most of the participants have at least a black eye, but there's Bucky, sandwiched between a guy in a suit and a woman in nurse's scrubs.

This needs to be a thing.

And then Claire would probably invite them to join in because Bucky "accidentally" brought way too many pizzas (he totally knew they were coming, two of those pizzas are Steve's and Sam's favorite type).

Sam and Steve are surprised to see that Gwen is a vigilante, they already knew her as Peter's best friend/girlfriend (they're not sure what the two are but they are pretty close). Apparently she hasn't been Spider Gwen for very long. Considering how organized and efficient she is Steve kinds of wonder if it wouldn't have been better to have her on the team, but well she fits so well with the Hunter and Peter is practically the Avengers' little brother - things are probably best as it is.

Later on Claire inevitably meet Natasha (who is kind of spying on the Hunters team to make sure they're good for Bucky and also because she's interested in a team with so many women in it), they get on like house on fire, everybody is a little terrified. Natasha often visit and take over training.

Kamala end up accidentally showing some of her fanfictions to Steve. He finds them surprisingly well written and is hooked (although he draws the line at Avengers fanfiction because it just end up with him not being able to watch his teammates in the eyes for days). He may or may not draw some fanart for Kamala from time to time (including one of Kamala and Captain Marvel fighting crime together). Kamala shows him how to create a tumblr - this may or may not be the best thing that ever happened.

Matt's priest almost has an heart attack when Captain America shows up to one of his and Matt coffee-session.

All of this is golden. Claire and Natasha would be the best terrifying friends. And now I'm kind of wondering how the whole Thanos-wants-to-nuke-the-universe thing would go down, in this kind of scenario.

Also:
Gwen is never fridged for Peter's manpain.

Okay, this is just a tiny scene but I couldn't get it out of my head.

The girl is maybe sixteen, with messy dark hair and a stunned expression. Considering the unconscious mugger at her feet, Claire supposes that's a reasonable reaction.

"It's okay," she begins.

The girl presses her fists to her face and squeals. Matt winces.

"You're Night Nurse and Daredevil!" she says, grinning like a loon. "You guys are *so* cool!"

"Well," Matt says hesitantly, gesturing to the man. The girl looks down at him, blinking.

"He's gonna be okay, right?"

"Probably?" Claire says. "We'll call the police, they'll pick him up. Come on, kiddo. Let's get you home."

Some of the people they rescue hang back; this girl grabs the offered hand and hangs on for dear life, beaming up at them both with the kind of fervor most of her age bracket reserve for famous actors or musicians.

"You guys are some of my favorites," she informs them as they exit the alleyway. "Why don't you have posters?"

Matt is grinning in a bemused sort of way. The blood dripping from his split lip gives the expression a slightly unhinged appearance. "Should we?"

"Totally," the girl says, nodding. "You're heroes!"

Claire doesn't need to look at Matt to know that his smile has vanished.

"Well," she says, breathing in the cold night air, the gray oppressiveness of car exhaust, the marshy smell of the Hudson a few yards away, "we're glad you see us that way."

The girl keeps chattering, stopping only long enough for Claire to put in her call to the precinct. They learn several things: her name is Kamala Khan, she likes fanfiction and covets bacon from afar, she has a big, friendly family and really, really wants to get a signature from Captain Marvel. Like, yesterday.

They see her off on the subway home (they've taken off their masks and wiped the blood from Matt's chin, but their battered appearance still gets them some odd looks) and then stand there in the silence, fingers brushing together.

"Coffee?" she offers.

"Please," Matt says.

A few months later, they're chasing down a Russian mobster when a fist flies out of nowhere and knocks him off his feet.

"Hey," says Kamala Khan, hands shrinking back to a normal size. "So, um. Nice to see you again?"

(Later, when Kamala drags first Akela Amador and then Bucky Barnes back to Matt's apartment, babbling something earnest about People in Trouble and We Should Help, they begin to realize that Kamala's first instinct when confronted with sad, tired people is to take their hand and offer a smile.)

(Even later, they admit that this might be a form of heroism in its own right.)

OMG, this is amazing. I don't generally ship Claire/Matt in the show because she made such a point of setting out her boundaries, but I totally ship it in this context. :D
