James Wesley, as Karen is not at all surprised to discover, is an absolute dick.
She doesn’t need nor want to know how the man got 99% of his charges dropped (even if she knows corruption and blackmail was probably involved), nor how the man got away with only community service as a sentence for, of all things, shoplifting. Because apparently Wilson Fisk’s right hand man couldn’t resist the thrill of sneaking a twenty-dollar pen out of a shop in his twenty-thousand dollar suit, even if there was a camera right there pointed at him.
What she DOES want to know instead, is whose strings he pulled (and how) that he is now serving his hours as a pro bono accountant at Nelson and Murdock. It had to be against some sort of law or regulation or rule or precedent or policy. Except somehow, it wasn’t, all three of them checked.
They don’t even need an accountant, Foggy says sadly when he finds out, because they don’t make any money.
James Wesley is a dick in the sense that he only ever buys coffee for himself on Monday mornings. And that he spends all of his time at work reading the latest Game of Thrones and then the latest Neil Gaiman. And he had the audacity to improve Karen’s filing system for all of the half drawer-ful of documents they have. And he spoiled an entire SEASON of Karen’s latest Netflix addiction because he /didn’t know she wasn’t caught up/.
The bastard. Some days she just wants to take a gun and shoot him full of holes.
-
Matt is almost glad that Wesley is in his office, because that way it makes it a lot easier to keep an eye on him and his activities.
He’d never confess it to Foggy or Karen (though they’ve probably figured it out), but he sometimes stalks the man after he gets off work to see if he gets up to.
Wait, no, follows. No, tails. Matt tails the dangerous criminal to make sure he doesn’t do anything to threaten innocent people like tripping them on the street. He just knows it will be a matter of time before the man goes back to his old habits. Even if he stops in the street to pat cute puppies, or takes a minute out of his day to chat with the overworked barista at their local café during relaxed hours, or literally will help little old ladies across the street, James Wesley is a bad bad man.
So he is a little charming, sure, and he can smile at a shopgirl and cause her heart to go aflutter, and he also seems to have a huge thing for golden retrievers, but.
But.
James Wesley puts a five dollar note in the hat of a homeless woman, she smiles and thanks him. Matt frowns.
-
Foggy knows he’s supposed to hate James. Except he doesn’t. He tries really really hard to, reminding him of all the terrible things the man has done, and then works up a swirl of righteous anger that lasts him all of twenty minutes before it dissipates. He’s very bad at it all.
He reminds himself to hate James when he’s eating a cupcake out of the box James bought from what has to be the best bakery in New York.
He reminds himself to hate James when he goes out to see the latest Marvel blockbuster with him, their arms loaded with popcorn and candy and oversized soft drink cups(because he has a free ticket and it’s better than letting him use it on some undeserving criminal).
He also reminds himself to hate James when James stays back one evening to help him sort through paperwork from a new and very urgent case (when Matt has disappeared again in his red suit, and Karen has a Date with a capital D and thus not told just how urgent everything really was).
But when James flashes a smile at him one day after Foggy laughs at one of his unflattering observations about their client’s brother, Foggy finds himself smiling back.
He feels very guilty about it for a long time.
