delicious account! it's only got the first ten pages of prompts at the moment, but mod is very slowly adding the rest. mod would greatly appreciate it if you put keywords in the subject of your prompts, because figuring out one-word summaries is hard. I would really like to hear some phthalates rants, please share. What are everyone's thoughts on phthalates?

PHTHALATES ARE BAD NEWS ALL AROUND.

They are unsanitary (difficult to clean, potentially porous) and therefore gross, they often smell funny, and they can melt (ie degrade) - either randomly on their own or when they come into contact with other better toys. Certain kinds of phthalates may be carcinogenic or affect reproductive health, which means of course that one wants to be rubbing 'em all up in your junk, right?

ALSO. Since sex toys are technically, like, 'novelties'? (read the packaging sometime, so so many of 'em say 'not for internal use' - like h'm, this buttplug is TOTALLY not going inside of anything, noooo) Government agencies (like the fda or whoever) don't actually have to check materials and stuff to make sure they're body-safe, so a lot of these 'novelties' are made with dodgy materials and can cause things like irritation, rashes, and infections. Baby toy manufacturers (since phthalates make plastics soft, as in teethers and pacifiers as well as squishy synthetic dongs) stopped using these materials like 15 years ago, so that should tell you something. Lack of regulation means that not only are things not checked, but manufacturers don't even have to tell you, the consumer, the truth about what you're putting in or on your genitalia. "Jelly" toys are usually chock full of phthalates, yaaay.

There's good news, though! Some manufacturers and sex toy shops are SUPER aware of this stuff and totally helpful and up-front, and there are many reputable bloggers out there that review sex toys with not just pleasure but also safety in mind, which is why it's always good to research toys/manufacturers online before buying.

*jazzhands*

(I think I covered everything right, but there are other folks on this thread who can correct me if I've erred)

You covered most of it! One more thing: the reason they still sell them is largely because they are among the cheapest shit money can buy. If you ever buy sex toys for cheap (and they're clear, with jewel-like colors), chances are they're jelly toys. This goes double if it's in a sketchy location, like a head shop or Spencer's.

ayrt: Oh, dear god, head shops and spencer's sell sex toys? yikes. I mean, it was hilarious enough when I worked at walgreens and trojan came out with those cheap vibes but at least there I *expected* to find things related to that part of the body (condoms and lube and pads and pregnancy kits were all in the same aisle, iirc)... I got my first vibrator at one of those places with the windows all painted over, and that was sketch enough, lol.

I have a clear, jewel-colored sex toy!! j/k, it's made of glass. Which Matt might enjoy for its cool smoothness? Idk. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ooh, those are often super pretty, too - you can do temperature play with those, can't you?

...you can?

I know almost nothing about sex toys (educational thread ftw!) but my immediate assumption would be that glass is the wrong substance entirely to be heating or cooling, doesn't it...shatter?

Depends on the glass. Most glass toys are solid enough that they won't crack, more so than drinking glasses (which can get pretty cold or hot with very little effort). My thought is that if it's hot or cold enough to crack, it's too hot or cold to put on skin.

Most are made of special shatterproof glass (for obvious reasons) and can be effectively heated and cooled. Your last sentence is so correct. D:
