Inspired by some of the discussion on the medical examination/humiliation prompt.

In an AU where slavery is still legal, although only for people who agree to it as adults, vigilanteism in slaves is considered a 'safe' venting mechanism, especially for slaves who happen to have extraordinary abilities.

The Avengers aren't vigilantes, they're Stark Industries' corporate combat team. (Maybe one of the conflicts in Iron Man 2 was efforts to get Iron Man classed as a vigilante instead of SI's corporate champion.)

There's two ways to become a slave, either someone very rich pays off crushing debt - in which case the slave can be freed at any time his/her owner is willing to allow it, and (s)he consents to accept freedom - or a free person can assemble evidence that (s)he isn't fit to live independently. For instance consistent displays of self-neglect. A person who enslaves themselves under the second set of conditions can only be freed if (s)he either proves (s)he can maintain self-care independently, or his/her owner dies without leaving the slave to an owner (s)he will accept.

It's not uncommon for lawyers and doctors to end up belonging to their spouses, because a lot of new lawyers and doctors have too much work to do to have time for self-care, and becoming a slave that way means all your debts are wiped out - it also gives tax-breaks.

Before Foggy finds out about Matt's activities he wonders if Matt is trying to build a case for being enslaved, and who's influencing him, but he can't find any of the documentation that needs. Maybe he does start his own file though, because he could also be documenting the development of an abusive relationship.

Up to the filler if Matt does want to be enslaved, if he thinks he has to be to give Hell's Kitchen what it needs, or if he decides to keep on being Daredevil without the safety net of giving up his freeman status.

I love this, and will second every slavery AU ever. This is the first one I've ever seen that could be genuinely fluffy and sort of nice, though, so kudos. :) Did you have anyone in mind to be 'influencing' Matt?

Not really, I was sort of thinking that someone influencing Matt was just Foggy's speculation - he's worried for his friend, because the injuries he comes in with, and the lousy excuses are sort of classic signs of a man setting himself up to register as a slave. Only you tell your prospective owner in advance, and usually your friends as well.

Although he might be worried about Matt's imaginary girl from episode 1 - the one Matt described as 'violent', and then 'Hottie McBurnerphone' since the spouse, or the partner is a very typical owner, and Matt hasn't approached him.

(If Tony Stark wasn't a multi-billionaire he'd tick all the boxes for a man planning to give up his freedom - Obidiah influenced him that way, and in some ways Tony's dynamics with JARVIS and Pepper are the classic dynamics of a vigilante-slave with his owner)
