now, see, I'm thinking Matt's Joy, on occasion, gets a turn: day of graduation, day he met Foggy, day he and Foggy passed their finals, day they graduated, day Nelson & Murdock became a reality, stuff like that. unfortunately Matt is a sadsack who is just terrible about happiness so outside of big momentous occasions, Joy's just off to the side like "guys. GUYS. my turn?"

(Matt's Joy and Fear probably just form a peanut gallery or something, since they don't come into play so often. when Claire got hurt tho it was def Fear and Anger at the controls, they work surprisingly well together when people Matt loves are in danger.)

Sadness and Anger definitely hold the reigns and fight over them while Disgust is in there pressing buttons at the same time but definitely not at the helm. And yeah Joy and Fear just play poker with each other most of the time, reminding the core emotions how to occasionally quirk a smile or save their skin.

"uuuuugh," says Disgust, plugging up her nose. "Matt, stop landing in dumpsters."

"but it's a comfy dumpster," says Sadness, draped in what Joy's pretty sure is a couch-dumpster. she supposes that's sort of an upgrade from last year's trash can model, though--try telling that to Disgust, who's perpetually grumbling about everything Matt smells or tastes.

("oh my god, don't put that in your mouth, it tastes like raw sewage!"

"you're exaggerating, I'd know if it was sewage," Fear had called from the poker game he and Joy were playing. "it's ice cream! it'll probably give him brain freeze at worst.")

"get out of the dumpster already!" Anger yells, slamming down on the console's buttons. "wait--"

he turns to look at Sadness, who's somehow managed to drag herself over to the console and set her hands firmly on it.

"what the hell," Anger says. Joy holds back a resigned sigh--the top of his head is beginning to glow again. they'll have to get someone to paint over the scorch marks again, and Joy really doesn't want to make a trip down to Dream Productions to borrow from them. their paint is literally on fucking fire. "Joy. Joy, get Sadness off the console."

"I don't know, man," Joy says, "I'm about to beat Fear's ass again."

"bluff!" Fear exclaims. "I'm pretty sure it's a bluff. it is a bluff, right?"
