Foggy liked to call Matt's series of interactions with the Avengers "a partnership." Matt detested the description, if only because his partnerships were far and few, and his relationship with the Avengers certainly didn't fall under it. Partners required trust and honesty, both traits that Matt withheld from Steve Rogers and his little band. He could admit that they made useful allies -- he wasn't that stubborn. In another life maybe they would have been friends and Daredevil would take them up on that invitation to movie night, with audio descriptions and everything. Clint would pelt his head with popcorn while Bruce and Natasha pretended to ignore them. Maybe while holding hands. Tony would split his attention between the movie and whatever he had thought up now -- Matt liked to fantasize about brand new accessability devices tailored to him. Steve and Sam would probably be the only team members that paid attention to the screen.

It sounded nice, in his head. In another life.

Just not this one.

"I don't want a room at the Tower."

Tony made a noise like a wounded elephant and slumped over the table. It was almost worth coming to Stark's lab to observe his reaction whenever Daredevil deflated his newest idea.

"Come on! Everyone should have a room at the Tower! It's roomy! It's nice! There's a little kitchenette and a private bathroom!"

Matt bit the inside of his cheek and counted to five. Then he exhaled. "There's JARVIS too."

Tony straightened. He set both hands on the table, palms down. His heart rate ticked up a little. "You're protective of your privacy and I understand that. I'm willing to do you a solid and remove JARVIS from your suite."

Lie. Possibly. Or just nervousness. It was a big risk to take, which only made Matt suspicious.

"Sounds like a big hole in your security net. You do that, there's no telling who would climb through my window."

Tony rolled a shoulder. Heart rate going down again. Were they already over the biggest hurdle? "I thought of that. JARVIS can stay whenever you're not using the suite. He'll vacate whenever you're there. Microphones, sensors, everything off. You get to keep your identity and Steve stops losing sleep worrying about you wandering New York with a head injury."

Matt sincerely doubted that Captain America lost sleep worrying about him but he knew better than to say so. Instead he fought to keep the rising irritation in his chest in check. The chances were very good that Tony was simply trying to be nice and not building secret dossiers on vigilantes in New York City by listening in on their conversations and recording their features via invasive AI, uploaded to private servers fortified against government intrusion and oversight, ready to be sold to the highest bidder at a moment's notice.

It was possible that Frank Castle was rubbing off on him.

Matt realized that he had grabbed one of Tony's small, delicate tools off the tabletop and was fiddling with it. He put it down.

"It's generous. I'll think about it." Which they both knew meant: thanks, but no.

Tony was good about it. He just said, "It's on the sixty-seventh floor if you change your mind."

Matt let himself out through the windows. He didn't need a suite at the Avengers Tower, he reasoned. He had Frank's safehouse after all. It was certainly more secure than the Tower for God's sake. Matt didn't need to be woken in the night because one of Stark's robots losing its mind, again. Say what you would about Frank: he didn't keep unstable AI on a computer chip logged into one of the most powerful networks on the planet.

Even when the Russians dropped an entire warehouse on Daredevil's head, he stood by that. When Iron Man personally dug him out of the rubble, lifted him out with one arm and said, "Yeah, remember that room I promised you?" Matt still struggled weakly, and replied "I already have a place to go. Put me down."

"You're not getting far on that leg," Iron Man replied. Matt flicked his tongue into the air and tasted blood, metallic and tangy. Shit. He had hoped that was just a bruise.

"Let Cap and Natasha clean up here. Let's get you fixed up and somewhere safe, yeah?"

Bossy, Matt thought as Tony tucked him under one arm and took off into the sky. Tony Stark was awfully bossy.

OMG (anon who posted the ideas bit above) it's Perfect! I love how easily and well-fitting you slot Matt and Frank's established relationship between the lines :3 everyone is wonderfully in character, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

I like how Matt seems a little torn- he acknowledges that being friends with the Avengers would be nice, but he's denying himself for some reason. I'm guessing that that reason is partly to do with how badly they'd take his relationship with Frank.

Repost for better formatting. Sorry these are so slow, work is kicking my ass :( but at least I have Matt and Frank to comfort me. *sobsob*

Just because Matt tried to avoid the Avengers didn't mean he didn't know that the Tower had a lot going for it. He knew about the advanced AI - JARVIS, or FRIDAY, depending on where you were and what Tony was doing at the time - and that it was a hive of activity for technology and software, not least of which were the medical facilities. If the recent paper from Jane Foster was anything to go by it still didn't measure up to what she had witnessed in Asgard but it suited the purposes of regular human beings.

"It's good thing Tony brought you here." Doctor Cho's needle made another pass. A kind woman. Long hair, a soft and mild scent that didn't irritate Matt's nose. A good antidote to the harsh sterility of the infirmary. "There was quite a bit of debris in this cut. It could have gone septic if not cleaned properly. I'm sorry about your armor."

"If you think he looks bad," Tony interjected, "then get a load of the other guys. Our friend here would have had it in the bag if they hadn't blown the building."

"Is that so? How did you find out about them--" She fumbled. She only ever fumbled when it came to his name. The one the newspapers had given him. "--Daredevil? Is that what you want to be called?"

Matt forced a harsh breath through his nose. He said nothing. He had been coerced into laying on his side for the better part of an hour while Doctor Cho cleaned two lacerations and a long strip of ripped off skin. She had been forced to slice through the armor with some sort of laser-cutter, an event that had prompted Matt to react -- violently. He hadn't actually struck the doctor but it had been a near thing. Now he lay on an examination bed with the discarded material tucked underneath his arm, trying not to shake as the stringent smells of gauze/antiseptic/cleaner/metal/tape/blood drilled into his left temple. Tony hovered next to them. Making sure he didn't do it again. Armed guard, protection detail.

"He's not much of a talker," Tony said. Matt briefly considered leaping off the bed to break his neck. Cho tugged the second laceration closed and tied off the silk. "I'm just glad we got word of where you were, pal. No telling what would have happened to you."

Bitter fury flooded Matt's mouth. The last thing he needed was to be patronized. He heaved himself up on one arm and gave Tony what passed for a flat stare. "I didn't ask for your help."

"Somehow, I get the feeling you wouldn't ask for help if you were in pieces on the ground." Stark shook his head, jawbone scraping against the neck of his armor with each pass. "It almost didn't happen, you know that? We were going after someone else when we heard about you. Hell, I think Barton's still hunting him. Bad break though, the Punisher's gone to ground."

Shit, shit. Matt forced himself into a sitting position, clenching his teeth against the firey pain blazing in his left thigh. "The Punisher? You're pursuing him?"

"We've been chasing him for months now. Almost had him too. Then he fired a grenade at Barton, Bruce Hulked out, it all went to shit. I almost caught up but--" Tony clicked his tongue. "Well, suffice to say I'm not getting a Christmas card from Frank Castle this year."

Matt realized his mouth had fallen open. He shut it with a snap. "'Hulked out?' What the hell does that mean? What kind of damage did he do?"

"Nothing that can't be fixed. Lay down, you're ashen."

"Like I can be anything else!"

"You've met Bruce. You know he's a good guy. Seriously, lay down, you're about to faint."

"I am not--" Matt exhaled a stuttering breath as the vertigo crept up his spine. He didn't lay down so much as fall, head spinning with pain, blood loss, and the sharp knives of horror stabbing him in the gut.

Sure, Bruce was a good guy. That didn't mean he should be driven after Frank Castle of all people.

"Did anyone die?"

"Because of the Hulk?" Tony lay a metal hand on Matt's shoulder. "No, Daredevil. Nobody died. We made sure."

This time, Matt thought but didn't say.

He wasn't the one who blew up warehouses. He didn't bomb Hell's Kitchen to make an example out of rival gangs. He didn't bring Hulks to a gun fight. His hands spasmed with the urge to grab Tony by the shoulders and shake him until his head snapped off. Did they not see it? Any of them? Did they not see the utter naive stupidity of it? It always boiled down to this time and he's a good guy.

This changed things. Leg be damned, Daredevil needed to be out in Hell's Kitchen tonight. The Hulk, unleashed on whatever neighborhood Frank had been skulking in, the idiot, brought out the worst in already desperate people. There would be panic and chaos.

Cho and Stark wouldn't let him leave without a fight. He had to wait until their backs were turned.

"You know, you shouldn't worry so much about the Hulk when the Punisher is out there. At least Bruce controls himself." Tony picked up his helmet from the table he had laid it on. "I feel sorry for Castle but he's not right in the head. Wait here for a minute, I'll get your spot set up."

He stepped past the examination table and joined Doctor Cho, who had retreated to the other side of the room. Matt strained his hearing to glean what he could from their conversation. The words didn't matter: he just needed to hear their voices, bouncing off the back wall. They must be turned away from him, speaking into the barrier. Not looking at him, that was the most important part.

"The Punisher? Is Clint -- alive?"

Matt set his feet on the floor.

"Hasn't checked in. His locator is still green. I don't think he's hurt. Not bad anyway."

Of course he isn't, Matt wanted to howl. Frank didn't pick fights with the costumed crowd. He didn't hurt them until they forced him to. Matt had found that out the hard way, and what a painful lesson it had been.

"I'll need more help. Cuts are one thing, gun shot wounds are another. I'm not a surgeon."

"I'll call Doctor Strange, see if he can recommend anyone."

Oh, the magician. Wonderful. Matt tightened his holster around his leg. He swallowed a gasp of pain and put the escrima sticks away next. First the Hulk, then forcing the Russians to rabbit and now magic -- what brilliant 'favor' would the Avengers think up next?

Matt tucked the destroyed armor scraps into his belt. The door was close. The air it sucked out of the room played around his feet. The currents guided him out and away, depositing him in the hallway. The AI didn't remark on his silent exit. Maybe JARVIS, or FRIDAY, was content to observe. Matt didn't want to consider the alternatives.

It didn't matter anyway. He knew the layout of Stark's building. The emergency exits were all the same and not nearly as secure as Tony thought they were. Matt needed somewhere safe to lay his spinning head. It was time to go home.

Ooooh, still loving it! I like it how Matt sees the Avengers as actually dangerous and uncontrolled, it's a different spin on his stance during civil war. :) (Side note: you might want to put the subject line of your Fill as -fill- Part *2*, because otherwise you can't see that you wrote a second part without expanding!)

AYRT yeah, I saw that. Can't change it though, not through anon.

I like stories where Matt despises the Avengers, especially after Ultron but realistically I think Matt is caught between liking them personally but unable to condone them professionally as Daredevil. Matt just wants to help and the Avengers cause more problems then they solve.

Sir. Madam. Whoever you are anon.
Please don't stop writing this. Please. The intrigue of where this is going (...well, sex, yes, but story-wise!!!) is too damn interesting!!!

I really like this so far! I'm a huge fan of Matt/Frank (I'm dying for season 2 of DD), so I like the subtle hints of Matt feeling protective of Frank. I'm curious, did the blown up building have anything to do with the Avenger's battle with the Punisher e.g. Matt and Frank were going after bad guys but the Avengers' arrival led to Matt being stuck alone with the bad guys while Frank dodged the Avengers or were the separate incidents that happened to be really close?

I feel like Matt has a lot in common with Steve, so I always picture him conflicting with Tony the way Steve does. I think this story kind of shows that.

Author Anon - I'm in the middle of Part 3 right now so I can safely say that Frank was not in the vicinity when the warehouse came down on Matt's head. The Avengers were notified about Daredevil's activities and Steve decided he was more important than the Punisher. Frank's mistake was not knowing when to quit and it got Bruce set on him.

Thanks for the compliment! That's what I was going for, that argumentative feeling and how Matt (and Steve) resist being steamrollered by Tony.

Good on you for picking up on Matt's protectiveness by the way, no one else seemed to notice, lmao.
