- Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).

- Discussion not related to the prompt should be moved to the discussion/off-topic post.

- Prompts

- Warnings are nice, but not mandatory. Get DW Blocker if there's anything you really don't want to see.
- Reposted prompts are allowed once one round has passed - i.e., prompts from post #2 cannot be reposted until post #4. Please include a link to where it has been previously posted.
- Fills
- Put [FILL] or something similar in the subject line when posting a fill.
- Announce your fill on either the Completed Fills Post or the WIP Post.
- Long fills can either be posted over multiple comments, or posted on AO3 and linked back here.
- Multiple fills are always okay.
- Fills can be anything! Fic, art, vids are all welcome.
- If it wasn't written specifically for the prompt, it doesn't count as a fill. You are welcome to provide a link to already existing fic that does fit the prompt, in case the prompter hasn't seen it, but it doesn't count as a fill.
Matt in a scent garden

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)They were meeting with the client’s sister-in-law because extra supporting testimony was a good thing. The sister-in-law would rather not leave her daughter, who was staying home sick from school, unattended. Her apartment was close of the offices of Nelson and Murdock, so the eponymous lawyers hoofed it over to speak with the sister-in-law.
Amelia Ho was a short, stocky woman with tired eyes and a comfortable smile. She sat them down on the couch and offered them tea or coffee, the latter of which Foggy and Matt gratefully accepted.
“Actually, I don’t have enough for three cups, so I’m going to brew some more,” she called from the kitchen. Foggy and Matt murmured their assent.
“Foggy,” Matt said quietly, “Are there flowers in the room?” Foggy looked around.
“No, I’m not seeing any. Do you—oh. There are a bunch of planters just outside. Amelia,” Foggy called.
“You don’t need to do that—” Matt began.
“Would it be okay if we looked at your plants?” Foggy continued. Amelia stuck her head into the living room.
“Huh? Oh, yeah, go right ahead,” she said. Foggy nodded and, over his partner’s mild objections, guided Matt to the sliding door that led to the apartment’s tiny balcony.
It was impressive how much greenery the woman had been able to fit on the small space. There was a big planter that contained a couple of different plants, a smaller box that Foggy was pretty sure had some herbs in it, and several pots with solitary inhabitants. Matt took a deep breath.
“Oh wow,” Matt said, quietly like no one was meant to hear it. “This is,” he took another deep breath, “Really nice.”
“What’re you smelling there, buddy?” Foggy asked.
“I don’t—lots, Foggy,” Matt said. He sounded distracted and even though he was still holding Foggy’s arm, he was leaning in the direction of the nearest planter. “Can you take me around?”
“Sure thing,” Foggy said. “You want me to describe it to you?” Matt started to shrug, then shook his head.
“I don’t think I need it,” he said. He reached out and gently rubbed the leaves of a nearby plant between his fingers. “Some sort of mint,” he said. “Spearmint, maybe?” Foggy shrugged, knowing Matt would be able to feel the gesture.
“You’d know better than me,” he said.
“Spearmint,” Matt said decisively. He pointed, “And there’s some kind of rose over there.” Foggy looked.
“Yep, it’s growing in a ceramic pot. The flowers are a pinkish white,” he reported. Honestly they looked a little droopy. Oh, the plant was fine, but the blooms weren’t the best looking roses he’d ever seen. Matt nodded and took another deep breath.
“There’s—rosemary over there?” he asked, pointing to a bushy plant with purple flower spikes. Foggy squinted at the plant, then nodded.
“Could be,” he conceded.
“It is,” said Amelia from the doorway. Both men jumped. She was smiling at Matt, head cocked to the side. “Are you a super sniffer?” she asked. Matt nodded, smiling crookedly.
“Something like that,” he said. She smiled wider and joined them in the tiny space not occupied by plants.
“Most people can name the herbs,” she told them. “They’re pretty familiar, even if not everyone gets to see them on the plant.” She picked a broad, glossy leaf off a plant and went to press it into Matt’s hand. “What is—”
“Basil,” Matt said. His smile was a softer variation on the cocky smirk Foggy associated with Matt’s competitive instinct. He looked—proud. He looked proud.
“Oh,” the woman said. She looked at Matt speculatively. “Impressive.” Matt shrugged and ducked his head. Amelia looked at Foggy uncertainly. “Do you want?” she held out the leaf.
“Sure, I don’t have a super sniffer,” Foggy said. He rubbed it between his fingers and held it up his face. Yes, definitely basil.
“How about this?” she broke off piece of a plant that looked kind of like grass to Foggy and rolled it between her fingers, but didn’t bring the plant any closer to Matt.
“Chives,” Matt said. She passed the chive, apparently, over to Foggy with a delighted grin on her face.
They went through sage and thyme and bay, then Matt got stuck on what to Foggy looked like another mint plant.
“I recognize it, but I don’t know. Where it’s. From?” Matt said, inhaling deeply like he was a dragon about to give flame. “Like a mint, but…”
“Trick question,” Amelia said cheerfully. “It’s catnip. Or, well, catmint. So you were close.”
“That’s not an herb,” Foggy pointed out.
“You can eat it,” Amelia said. “Apparently. I don’t, but I hear you can.” She turned to survey the plants around them. “What else, what else?” she asked herself.
“What’s that over there?” Matt asked. “It smells almost bright?”
“Bright, bright,” Amelia muttered. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. “Oh!” She gestured, and Foggy guided Matt closer. “Scented geranium,” she said. She guided Matt’s hand to its leaves and added, “Nice, isn’t it?”
“Very,” he agreed.
“I have another variety over here,” she said. Matt let her move his hand to touch another plant that, to Foggy’s eyes, looked identical. “It’s subtle, but—”
“It’s beautiful,” Matt said. She smiled. “How did you choose all of them?” She shrugged and looked around the balcony.
“The first plant I got was the mint over there,” she said. “It was in the supermarket, and it looked so sad, and I bought it and took it home. And it was—having something relying on you, even a plant, it’s kind of a nice feeling. And I was spending a lot of time in my room, but because I could smell it I could always tell it was there, like a roommate. And then I bought a few more grocery store plants, and well—here we are. I have a few succulents, but I don’t like them as much because there’s no smell.”
They spent a couple more minutes admiring the garden, then went inside to talk about the case. Foggy didn’t realize how boneless Matt had been until he shook himself and put on his serious face. Amelia gave Matt a sprig of something as they left, and that soft look came back a little. When a potted plant—scruffy looking, to Foggy’s eye, but he supposed that wasn’t the point—appeared in the offices of Nelson and Murdock a few weeks later, he didn’t question it.
--
And then Matt gradually fills his office with plants that smell nice--mostly herbs and things that are easy to obtain. he doesn't want his plants to die if he gets killed and figures that if they're in the office karen and foggy are more likely to remember the plants. he never mentions this to either of his friends on account of the inevitable freaking out that would ensue. Karen sometimes abducts his plants if they're looking nice and puts them in the front room. at some point foggy and karen start buying him plants you have to go to an actual nursery for.
amelia's thing about being responsible for another life doesn't really apply for matt, since he already holds himself responsible for the safety of Hell's Kitchen. she was in a depressive bout when she bought the mint. it's nothing so dramatic as "this plant saved my life," but she sure loves that plant. she's got a bunch of nonaromatic annuals around inside the house, but they wouldn't have caught matt's attention as much. i imagine there are also some pretty impressive planters on the roof, and that's where she gets most of her digging in the dirt fix.
i have no idea if you can even grow roses in pots, and i also haven't a clue as to what scented geraniums actually smell like. i would've given ms ho a lilac too, since that's one of my favorites, but i didn't think i could justify her having a tree in her apartment.
not pictured: matt murdock being "dragged" to a community garden and happily going around and smelling ALL the plants. ("UGH I may never eat a tomato again, Foggy." "Seriously? What's your prob--oh. I get it now. Huh." "It's gross, Foggy.")
