Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 10/14(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)Foggy groans as the sound of his phone ringing drags him from his pleasant sleep. He feels around for his phone and is surprised to realise it's not on his bedside table. Phone?
Pocket? The sensation of cloth, smell of detergent and sound of pants hitting the floor slips into his mind. Along with a sense of annoyance at being awake and having been tricked into sleeping in the first place.
Right. Matt. Sharing minds. Foggy wakes up a bit more and manages to get himself out of bed just as his phone stops ringing. Behind him, Matt rolls over into Foggy's warm spot, the delight he feels in being there surging through Foggy.
It feels familiar... like something that's niggling at Foggy. Something he felt/thought/was last night but-
His phone starts to ring again, breaking him out of his thoughts. Urghphone.
Breakit Matt sends earnestly, along with a wave of his sleepy, half-awake state. Foggy sinks into it for a moment, before he remembers the damned phone. Groaning, he manages to find the pocket it's in and answers it - noting before he does that the number is a private one.
'Foggy Nelson?'
'Your name is actually Foggy? I totally thought that was a really weird nickname you came up with to try to avoid us finding you- stupid of you really to think that I wouldn't find you.' Foggy finally places the voice as that of Tony Stark. Which. What the hell?
He feels Matt awake up totally, caution running through them both. 'Mr Stark, how did you get this number?'
'Google. Didn't you know that your number is on your website? Or did you not know you have a website? I totally bet you didn't know you had a website. That's very-'
Oh damn. He'd forgotten that. Unwilling to listen to Stark ramble, Foggy cuts him off. 'Mr Stark, why are you calling me?' All he can see right now is the ball Stark threw at Matt; combining with the fear heavyhurtwhatifmissed Stark'd caused. It's definitely colouring his emotions right now.
'Oh right. Well, I was wondering when you're coming into the Tower, there's a car waiting to come pick you up and all I need is a time and place. Well not even a place because I definitely know the place or at least JARVIS does but I need a time. Though right now works for-
Stark's voice suddenly cuts out. Confusion? Matt moves so he's standing beside Foggy, practically touching him even though Foggy knows Matt can hear the conversation perfectly from his bed. Annoyance. How dare he think we'll drop ourlivesourbusinessourKaren everything and come see him because he asked nicely.
Agreement.
'Foggy?' Dr Banner asks, his voice soft after Stark's motor mouth. 'I'm so sorry about Tony. We usually gag him around new people.' They have to laugh at that, a feeling that warms them both as it jumps from Foggy to Matt and back. 'But he is right in that we really need you both to come in today.
Confusionfear. 'Why? I thought you said you'd check up on us in a week.'
'That was before we noticed a pattern in Hell's Kitchen. Foggy, five people are dead.'
Foggy focuses on Matt in time to feel the AngerguiltfearangerangerANGER that runs though him at his ignorance and the mere fact he hasn't done anything. Reassurancenoguiltcalm? Foggy sends back. Matt takes a deep breath, and some of the anger drains away.
It's still there, but nothing like it was last night.
'We're on our way.'
'I'll have Tony send a car. It'll be faster.' Banner hangs up before Foggy can protest.
'I'm not sure I like him,' Foggy comments aloud - trying to avoid the inevitable bleed of emotions - as he throws a clean shirt at Matt and pulls on one of his own. 'I mean, yay for keeping us out of experiments but we really don't need a car.'
You do like him amusementdelightyoulikeeveryone. For a guy that wrecked dangerangerfear Harem he's surprisepityfear nice. Devilinsideunderstanding. Matt speaking mentally surprises Foggy and he turns to look at his friend. Amusementjoyammunition. Need a hand there Buddy?
Matt gives Foggy the sense of a glare; though the actual look isn't visible as he's somehow gotten caught in his shirt in such a way that his head isn't visible but one of his arms is pinned. Foggy sends Matt over the image, to which he replies with Asleepwhatfocusannoyedtiredangersleep, causing Foggy to laugh more because he can feel that it's a total lie and the reason Matt got so caught is he was too busy focusing on what Bruce had said to focus on his shirt. Angerangeranger he sends back; his impression of Matt's current emotions before adding calm?caaaaaalmfriend
AnnoyanceHELPMEfriend. Foggy laughs harder.
Finally they get Matt's shirt on properly and a cup of coffee into them both just in time for Tony's car to show up. Matt sniffs dramatically as he enters and Foggy gags at the smell of -actually no, Foggy doesn't want to know what smell he's gagging at.
Matt is amused. Welcome to my world.
You can friendnoregretteasing keep it.
********
Any of the amusement Matt's managed to feel since Banner's call drains from him the moment he and Foggy enter Avenger Tower. He has his arm in Foggy's as they're directed to a lift out of sight of the main lobby and it's only partially a deception. Glass has always been a bit of a bane of his senses.
Which Foggy now knows. No wonder you hated evilawfuldraining Landman and Zack. He pushes for Matt's sense of the lobby and Matt passes it over, finding a vague bit of amusement in how Foggy flinches. Holy shit that's scaryconfusing awful. I propose a change to our business togetheruspartnersincrime plan. No glass or steel building.
Fine delightedlovepartners by me. Foggy leads Matt into the lift and both pause when they realise there's no buttons. Annoyance?
'Good morning Mr Nelson; Mr Murdock,' JARVIS says as the lift begins to move. Annoyance. This sense of annoyed unison, Matt vaguely notes, is causing him to slip into Foggy's waiting mind as 'he' becomes 'they' but they don't particularly care.
'Where are you taking us?' They say.
There's a short pause. 'Dr Banner is in the common floor lounge room with Mr Stark and Ms Romanov. I am under orders to take you there.'
They consider this. 'Fine,' they say though aware that it wouldn't matter if it wasn't fine for them.
JARVIS doesn't speak again but they get the impression it... he's still there. The lift stops and they slip their arms into each other's, their cane hanging from one hand. It's easy enough to know where they're going and they absentmindedly process the three visible people in the room. They also note the fourth person, whose heartbeat they can hear in the vents along with the faint scent of wax.
Beeswax, woodoil. Avengers. Archer? Hawkeye.
They stop at the beginning of the lounge, as Banner rises to greet them. 'Thank you for coming so quickly.'
'Our pleasure,' they say and everyone's heartbeats jump. Creepy?
Creepy. Foggy pulls back and 'they' becomes 'he'. It's still a loss but Matt realises it's necessary. Why hadn't they cared before?
'Okay, that is still creepy.'
Matt smiles, one he knows is more intimidating than anything else. 'We are sorry. We're... still getting used to things.'
According to Foggy, Stark raises an eyebrow. 'Speaking with one voice is better but plural pronouns aren't.'
'We're not here to please you Mr Stark.' Foggy shifts, his anger bleeding over to Matt. He really doesn't like Stark. 'We're here because you said people in our city are dying and we want to help. What's happening?'
'What happened to you.' Romonov moves in front of Matt and he hears the shift of air as she looks him up and down. 'Only they're not as lucky as you.'
'How so?'
Stark takes a seat on the lounge, and after a moment the others follow suit; Matt and Foggy a step behind. 'Well for one,' Stark says once everyone is seated, 'they don't have a friend like yours that's able to out argue an AI and get access to my tower.'
Matt finds himself smiling at both Foggy's embarrassment and his memory of the argument. 'I'm aware of my fortune in having Foggy as my friend.'
Ignoring Stark's 'Yes, singular pronoun!' Romonov adds, 'You're also the only person to have lived more than thirty minutes.'
Fearpanicconfusion
Agreement. 'Excuse me?'
Stark clicks his fingers and Foggy passes on the holographic image that's just appeared in the middle of the room; a map of Hell's Kitchen with five red and one green dot. Matt knows the green dot is where this all began.
'Five bodies found in Hell's Kitchen, hearts having failed.' Banner points at each dot in turn. 'Just like yours was on the way to doing. No one noticed the first four.'
'People die in Hell's Kitchen. It's a bit of a rough neighbourhood now,' Foggy snaps with a defensive note. 'We're trying to change that but no one can save everyone.' Matt flinches a bit at the last, knowing Foggy is aiming it at him.
Banner holds up his hands. 'Not accusing. We didn't notice either. Not until your attack. You were the first to live but not the only attack that night.' He points at a dot, not two blocks from the green dot. 'Homeless vet, Johnson King, died within twenty minutes of your attack.'
'Why were you attacked?' Romonov asks suddenly and Foggy jumps.
'Because I was there?' Matt feels Foggy's shrug. 'The dude said he was from Hydra-' lie, I told you that No you didn't liarfriendannoyed, I figured it out for myself from evidence, '- and that he was going to destroy the people of Hell's Kitchen until he got Daredevil to come out by getting someone he loved.'
There's a long silence before, 'Wait, he attacked you?' Stark stands and moves to poke at Foggy. 'I thought he hit your friend here. In fact I know he hit Murdock. How did that happen?' Matt can feel the suspicious looks of Stark and Banner and the calculating look of Romonov.
Oh shit.

--- Right, Tony, because people never speak for other people? Obviously they're both in this, so they'd both be getting used to it. XD

Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 10/14(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-02 10:51 am (UTC)(link)I headcanon Matt as NOT a morning person. That's Foggy's thing. It doesn't help that he likes to stay out late being Daredevil.
Tony, you arsehole. Theme of this part.
Karen. She's like, 70% of the reason they didn't go bust in the first month. The other 30% being Foggy and Matt are fantastic lawyers.
Bruce is a darling and I hate that he hates himself.
Yes, yes they do. Because even the Hulk can be a nice guy, if he's not pissed off at you.
Dorky Matt is my favourite thing; especially angry dorky Matt who's only had like, 3 hours sleep.
I'm glad you do! Hopefully soon. I'm going to have to swap some of my planned parts around because of the Avengers.
=D! I'm delighted! I wasn't sure it worked but I hoped it did.
Well, they do but rarely after creeping everyone out by speaking as one with two voices. And to be fair, Matt was deliberate in his word choice to make sure he used plural pronouns. He likes provoking Tony.
Like I said. PLOT.
Things are indeed going down. There's PLOT and there's a LOT of it.
You're welcome! *blushes* I'm, as always, glad you like it!

Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 10/14(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 02:58 am (UTC)(link)Good catch on Tony's part, though Foggy and Matt can easily say they still get their memories/minds mixed up with the merged thoughts. Or that Foggy and Matt were together, and Matt pushed Foggy aside. Or even that Tony and company just assumed Foggy was a bystander and not the target in the attack. Especially in the last one, it would be their assumption that the blind guy was the victim since he's blind.
Looking forward to the next chapter. I love your story so far!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 06:24 am (UTC)(link)...Have you been looking at my chapter notes??? Some of those are mega close to what's coming. =)
Thanks again! I'm hoping to get the next part up tonight; or tomorrow night.
Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 11/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)They freeze. It's only for a moment but that's long enough. Shit we were suspicious. LiedeflectprotectFoggy.
Agreement. 'Ah well, Matt was next to me? Was next to me. The asshole had awful aim you know. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn-' Confusion. Foggy, what do you mean notfatwhatthehell? by that? IGNORE, '- clearly and got Matt instead of me.'
Not believing it Matt gives the Avengers a bland smile even as he mentally points out the obvious to anyone with eyes. Amusement noeyes. Oh shut up. 'We were together; walking home from our office,' he somehow manages to lie.
Romonov returns Matt's bland smile. 'You said 'I'. People don't say that unless they were alone.'
Shit, shit shit. 'Slip of the tongue,' Foggy says and tries to ignore how much of a question his tone made it sound. 'I is we and we are I. It's a bit hard to tell sometimes.'
He can see the doubt creeping into Stark's face and the way Banner is nodding in understanding. Only Romonov looks unconvinced; raising a single eyebrow at them. Foggy tries to look completely innocent and like this is totally and utterly the truth.
She nods and Foggy breathes a - internal - sigh of relief. Then Matt stiffens beside him - noise behind them; movement of air; ARROW - and pushes Foggy to the side.
He catches the arrow an inch from where Foggy's head would have been. Lying half on the lounge, half off it, Foggy looks up and can't help but stare at it. PANICFUCKWHATTHEHELL.
There's a collective gasp of surprise from Stark and Banner but Foggy ignores them for now because he can feel Matt's rising anger and fuck it's directed at the still hidden Hawkeye.
'Get out of there!' Foggy cries, as Matt rises in a fluid movement. 'Hawkeye, MOVE.' Romonov rises too but Matt just leaps the lounge - which, okay that's hot -, stumbles for a step and marches towards the vent Hawkeye is now crawling out of. Matt still has the arrow in his hand.
'Hey, no. Oh damn no.' Hawkeye darts to the left and Matt moves after him. 'Look at the damned arrow, it's harmless!'
Even Matt stops at that, the room considering Hawkeye's words. Then Matt holds up the arrow. 'Foggy?'
Foggy rises and peers at it. Even from this distance, he can see the bright orange sucker cup on the arrow. Ah. Shit.
'You see?' Hawkeye lowers his hands, clearly thinking Matt's calming down. 'Harmless.'
There's only a moment of warning for Foggy - the feeling of Matt's anger surging until he suddenly becomes deadly calm - before Matt punches him in the jaw. Hawkeye stumbles under the blow and Matt smiles, his satisfaction running through Foggy. It's almost a nice feeling. Almost.
'You're lucky it was,' he says darkly and turns, walking back to his position on the lounge as if nothing had happened.
Foggy finally looks at the other three Avengers. Stark's jaw is on the floor, Banner is blinking continuously and Romonov... well she looks somewhere between pissed and amused.
'How have you not killed anyone yet?' she asks and yeah that's amusement.
Matt flinches, shameguiltfeardevilinme running through him... them. Reassurancebeliefyouareagoodman. Admit nothing?
Displeasureannoyance Bit late for that, Foggy.
No confession; no proof. 'I don't think you've noticed, Miss Romonov. Hell's Kitchen's Devil doesn't kill.' Foggy takes pleasure in the surprise that flickers across her face. 'It's not the job of the devil to kill after all. He's just the tempter.'
'You're not religious.' The surety in Romonov's voice is vaguely annoying.
'I am though,' Matt says gently, his anger kept out of his voice. 'And at the moment, it's a bit all over the place who's what.'
'You both are shit liars.' Hawkeye drops into the chair across from them, cutting into the conversation. 'Nice punch Daredevil,' he says without a hint of anger. 'And I really want to know how you knew it was coming.'
Stark finally picks up his jaw and finds his voice. 'So do I. Nelson wasn't looking so it wasn't his sight.' He pauses and peers at Matt's face. 'Are you even really blind?'
'Yes.' Foggy and Matt snap in unison; their anger flaring. They rise as one too, ready to walk out.
Banner is on his feet in a moment. 'We're sorry. Please, sit. I promise we can find a gag for Tony.' Matt shares his honest heartbeat but Foggy can feel that he's leaving their decision to Foggy.
'Why should we stay?' Foggy offers Matt his arm, and Matt fumbles for his cane.
'Because you're going to go chase down this man and we can help.' Hawkeye is the only Avenger still seated and he's playing with the arrow he'd fired at Foggy. He looks up and meets Foggy's eyes. 'We can watch his back. Keep him safe for you.'
SafetyhelpprotectMatt.
Foggy-
My choice?
Your choice. Foggy can feel Matt's reluctant acceptance. He's not going to fight Foggy on this.
'Okay then.' They sit back down.
********
The room is silent for a long moment. Even Foggy's thoughts are quiet, nothing more than a sense of vaguely guilty relief. Matt thinks he should be madder that Foggy's basically signed him up to the Avengers but all he can feel is Foggy's relief at the thought of him safe and well. It's hard to be mad.
'So. Plan of attack?' Hawkeye finally prompts. Matt really does need to remember his actual name at some point. Batton? Barklet? Bar-something. Hawkeye works. Annoyed/whereismemory? Perfectionist. Amused/annoyed/bestfriend/amuseannoy
Stark makes an annoyed noise but Matt hears the movement of air - and Foggy shows him the visual of - as Banner covers his mouth. 'No Tony.'
'He wants to know how I do what I do,' Matt says with a smile. Stark nods violently, such that Foggy doesn't even bother to narrate the movement. I heard that! With my ears. Matt leans forward, 'Good luck finding out.'
Hawkeye laughs as Banner groans. Tony Stark's eyes just lit up Matty. I think amusementworry you're going to regret that challenge.
Probably.
'What else do you have on this man?' Foggy asks, showing Matt the image of the map that's still floating in mid air.
Romonov shrugs. 'Not a lot. You're the only one to have seen him and lived. We have video surveillance of the areas of the attacks but not all of them are working.'
'Hell's Kitchen. Not exactly the best place for security cameras.' Thank God. Matt adds as an aside to Foggy, who sends him a pulse of worry at the idea of Matt being caught by something that's often hard for him to detect. I'm careful
'So you'll need me to describe him?'
Stark laughs. 'We can do you one better.' Matt hears a bunch of beeps and Foggy shows him the collection of mugshots he's just replaced the map with. 'Find him in that.'
Foggy nods and begins to flick through them. Matt tries to help for the first page but it's quickly obvious that his grasp of sight, even through Foggy, is well... foggy. At best. Bad pun Buddy
You love them though.
Yeah I do. 'Oh hey! Stop! I think that's him.' Foggy points to a man wedged in the bottom corner.
Matt doesn't need to see to sense the confusion in the room. 'I don't know him,' Banner finally states. 'You guys?'
There's a collective head shake. Matt just shrugs. 'And his name is?'
Oh SHIT sorry guiltyconfusionguilt. Mitchell Yee?
'Don't know him,' Matt says with a shake of his head. 'Should I?'
'Not as far as I can tell,' Stark is making a lot of computerised beeping noises and Foggy is way too amused at the sight. 'By the way, that's still creepy.'
'You're the reason we have it,' Matt argues.
'I blame Thor.'
Matt rolls his eyes, aware Foggy is doing the same. 'So, who is this man?'
'Hydra grunt,' Romonov says. 'Barely high ranking enough to even have a photo in our database.' She makes a humming noise. 'I'll ask around. Some of my contacts still exist.'
'So will we,' Foggy says. 'There's gotta be a reason for Hell's Kitchen, right?' He checks his watch. 'Speaking of which, we'd better get back to it.'
Hawkeye nods. 'You got a number for us?'
'We've Banner's. Or Stark's.' Matt frowns as he tries to remember who actually called this morning.
'JARVIS, put everyone's numbers on their phones.' Matt stiffens at the invasion of privacy.
So does Foggy. 'You do that JARVIS and Matt'll kick your ass.'
JARVIS sounds amused. 'I doubt that is possible as I lack an ass to kick but I will endeavour to not invade your privacy for Sir's every whim.'
'Spoil sport.' Right that's it. Matt needs to leave, right now. He rises.
'If that's all then?'
Foggy shows him Romonov's fierce look as she nods but only later, once they've fled the tower. Right then, all Matt gets is the nod before he's high-tailing it out of there.
He has a name and that's somewhere to begin tonight. Right behind you buddy. Foggy's light tone doesn't hide his fear and anxiousness at the thought of Matt 'Daredeviling' tonight.
...Maybe there's something they have to do first.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)*chinhands* Like what? Could it be addressing this?
Matt just leaps the lounge - which, okay that's hot - stumbles for a step and marches toward the vent.
Did someone finally buy a clue?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:15 am (UTC)(link)Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 11/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 02:37 am (UTC)(link)But I also have to say that this is one of the only fics that has made me hate all of the Avengers so ridiculously. And I loVE the Avengers! Bruce is literally the only half-way tolerable one of them. And on one hand, I get that this is Matt/Foggy POV and yes, naturally, the Avengers should be exploratory and suspicious toward these two strangers/outsiders, but good god. Do i hate how they're acting and reacting to the situation.
On the other hand, I would probably kill a dozen men to read another hundred chapters of Foggy and Matt think/feeling at one another, and you do such an amazing job capturing their voices and the flow is nice and how they're just so supportive and loving toward one another and how they can both be so incredibly dense about each other's affections and sljkfsdjklsdfjklsdf i just love.
I will say I didn't catch that bit where Matt stumbles when Foggy thinks him leaping over the lounge is hot until the anon above pointed it out, but what an excellent addition ;D I am SO SO looking forward to reading the next part!!
Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 11/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:20 am (UTC)(link)Ah yeah well. I know I'm not showing them in their best light here and a lot of it is definitely coloured by Matt/Foggy's POV - I headcanon Matt as either disliking or at least not actively liking the Avengers. And well, everyone here is either so focused on getting to the truth of Matt (Natasha and Tony; in different ways) or following someone else's lead (Clint) that only Bruce is considering that hey, these are people who might not like the way we're acting here...
*more blushing* Thanks again! I'm loving writing this and I'm so delighted this is working!
Thanks! I'm hoping lots of people spot it; it might be important. =)
Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 11/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 05:38 am (UTC)(link)y not kinki mind is so hapy with this story. They way they are trying to get along being on each otehrs minds. Living togetehr and sharing all this stuff. Must eb scary but theya re doing it.
Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 11/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:22 am (UTC)(link)Thank you! It is a bit scary for them but they're coping. =)
Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 11/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 08:42 am (UTC)(link)Let me add that I also strongly dislike most of the Avengers right now...and I usually adore most of them. I'm not a huge fan of Natasha, as I don't trust her and it makes my skin crawl that she views people and the world like a set of objects to be studied and manipulated. Which makes her a badass character, but not terribly likable to me. So you are so nailing her character in this story. The rest of the team I usually adore, though. Yet I wanted to Matt to stab Clint in a tender area for the arrow at Foggy. Just like I was upset at Tony for the thrown object way back in the first chapter or so. Tony and Natasha also got frowns over wanting to stay during the medical stuff with Matt and Foggy. Privacy, people! Respect it.
But this dislike is a good thing in this story because it's appropriate for the context and events, but especially for Matt as a character. Not to mention Foggy, who is always on Matt's side and is protective, too. The Avengers we know from the movies are mostly in a very clear antagonistic relationship of them vs the bad guy(s). Here, we're seeing them be invasive, antagonistic, investigative, and manipulative to Matt and Foggy, who we all love.
It's easy to forget most of the Avengers literally know no limits. Natasha and Clint work for a black ops agency that has no limits - they assassinate, lie, steal, manipulate, oppress, and disappear people as they will because as far as Shield is concerned, Shield is the ultimate authority that only answers to the World Council (which is made up of like 5 people). Tony is rich and powerful as all fuck and is a tech genius. Information and all that money and power can get are his at a snap of his fingers or a request to JARVIS. Thor is the crown prince of the realm that rules the 9 realms - his only limits are those defined by Odin and possibly Frigga. Steve is too ingrained in the military/Shield and that mindset - especially since his modern world experience is Shield, that he's more apt to think they have every right to know everything about Matt and Foggy's lives. Bruce is the only one who knows limits and would respect privacy and boundaries like a regular person because he is the most regular of them all (aside from his genius and the Hulk), and especially as he was hunted for years and until very recently by the US Military.
I'm with Matt. Don't trust the Avengers and cut ties from them as soon as this is done. They don't have the same priorities as Matt and Foggy. The Avengers is all about the big picture and saving cities/countries/planets. Matt and Foggy are all about the individual and saving one person at a time. Of course, who knows if the Avengers will let them.
You killed me by having the Avengers know Matt is Daredevil. My heart stopped. I'm now crossing my fingers that this doesn't bite our boys in the ass.
Again, wonderful chapter. My fist is still shaking in anger at Clint!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)See, I really like the Avengers too but I'm well aware of their flaws- they wouldn't be interesting characters if they weren't flawed. Natasha is a very hard character to pin down because she's always calculating so I'm glad I managed to nail her character. The Avengers don't do so well with privacy... it's something I've noticed in the movies. They're no good at respecting boundaries and privacy.
Yes, exactly! Add to that the fact that the Avengers were, in a way, responsible for what happened to Hell's Kitchen (in canon) and then Matt (in fic) and well, I've never been able to see Matt and Foggy as liking them straight off (unless approached in a correct way).
To all of that - YES! Though maybe not Steve... he might be a military man but he believes in civil liberties first. I do think, though, he'd want to know about Daredevil and Matt's abilities which would negate his belief in those civil liberties. Bruce is definitely the real ordinary man on the team with a strong sense of what happens when people get involved in his life.
Oh definitely. Matt's not going to hang around the Avengers (if he can) once this is over. They're just not operating on the same scale - Matt's focused on the trees and can't/doesn't need to see the forest while the Avengers focus on the forest and don't see the trees. If that makes sense?
Not saying if it will or not. =)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 12/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)Leaving the tower, Foggy is a mess of nerves. It's slowly dawning on Foggy exactly what he's done. He's signed Matt up the Avengers; people who had no problems manipulating them into a confession. Reassurance/support/love But underlying it all is a sense of relief that someone - anyone - might be watching out for Matt and guilt at that relief.
Point being, he's a bit of an emotional mess that Matt seems content to just reassure. Somehow he's pushed his emotions down or back so Foggy can get only the barest sense of them. Notimportant/friend/helpyou. He'd be annoyed, but it's helping and by the time they get to the office and call Karen - Foggy having called her on the way to the tower to tell her they'd be late and to take the morning off - Foggy's starting to get a handle on his feelings.
It's about then that Foggy notices that there's an idea in Matt's head. And realises that it's been there a while, from practically the moment they left the tower. Foggy can tell that much. But somehow Matt manages to avoid thinking on it in any way. And continues to do so all through their quiet day. So instead Foggy just gets to feel the delightbrilliant IDEAIDEAIDEA in Matt's head without any of the context for an entire day. It's maddening.
But finally, moments after Karen leaves - and takes her nearly audible worry with her - Matt stands. 'Come on.'
Finally going to tell me ideadelightalldayMattreally what you've been planning?. Foggy gathers his things, throwing Matt's briefcase at him without thinking. Matt catches it without even bothering to move his head to 'look'. Show off
Amusement That's nothing Foggy. 'I might be able to manage telling you, if you're interested.'
You're hilarious amusementannoyancebestfriend.
Matt just smiles. 'Go get some casual clothes on. I'll meet you at Fogwell's.'
Foggy blinks in confusion but Matt doesn't give him time to process. He's out the door and halfway down the stairs before Foggy can so much as blink.
It dawns on Foggy that this might getting close to the furthest they've been from another since this whole thing started - even when being Daredevil Matt had stuck fairly close to his apartment, comparatively - as Foggy's apartment is on the other side of Hell's Kitchen to Matt's. He feels Matt hesitate.
I didn't think stupidimpatient of that. I just thought it'd save time if we met up later. I know nosweatallnicefabrics that you only brought over suits to my place.
It's fine relievedlovednotabandoned Buddy. I do need to go back to my place sometime. Foggy grabs his bag and locks the door. Go Buddy. I'll beat you there.
Foggy feels Matt's amusement as he starts to move off. I'd like to see you try.
As he walks home, the sense of Matt in his mind doesn't fade. It's still there, a constant delightful buzz that lets Foggy know Matt's already at his place and if he wants to bet him, Foggy is going to have to get a move on.
He's in and out of his apartment in five minutes flat but definitely knows he's going to lose. He can sense Matt's amusement at the thought but as Matt's already halfway to Fogwell's - which is closer to his home to begin with - Foggy doesn't see what's so funny.
Sore loser.
Bad winner.
Matt laughs mentally, the warm feeling spreading through them. Foggy rides the feeling the entire way to Fogwell's. As expected, Matt's already there and he's halfway through wrapping his hands.
'So your big idea?' Foggy asks as he dumps his bag by Matt's. He might be wearing clothes appropriate for the gym but if Matt thinks he's going to actually work out he's got another thing coming. Fighting isn't Foggy's thing.
Don't worry I know youfriendsoftballer how lazy you are.
Foggy gives Matt the finger. Matt just laughs.
'My big idea is for me to train and for you to sit in.' Mentally like Daredeviltogetherseperate the other night. Maybe if we practice we can get it right? I think I'll need to be in top form tonight fearconcernwhatifFoggygetshurt, if I find this Yee.
Matt is being absolutely genuine. There's no lie in his mind; he thinks this will help. Why then does Foggy feel reluctant and like he's missing something?
'Foggy?'
'It's fine. Let's do this thing!' Matt smiles and starts to lightly punch at the bag why Foggy takes a seat. Softly, slowly, 'he' becomes 'they' and they step up their punches.
Soon they move into kicks and they move away from the punching bag. They do a series of complicated flips, ones they rarely use just in case they get them wrong, and Foggy can't help but feel a rush of lovewantlove at the look of pride on Matt's face when he lands it.
Matt freezes and it dawns on Foggy that 'they' became 'he' at some point and holy shit Matt felt that. Before he can stop it, a flash of panic/love/want/loveforever/pine slips out and Matt jerks in surprise.
'Shit.'
********
Matt can't understand why Foggy's suddenly terrified because Matt just felt the sheer amount of love Foggy has somehow managed to have for Matt. He's in shock; not just because he's confirmed that Foggy does want him like he'd started to suspect at Avenger Tower but also because it's not just want. Every piece of positive emotion that Matt's felt from Foggy is suddenly making way more sense; it's not just the love you feel for a friend.
He never thought Foggy would love Matt the way Matt loves Foggy.
Of course Foggy's too busy panicking to track Matt's thoughts. 'Oh shit, shitshitshit. Matt, Buddy, Matt-'
'Foggy,' Matt says calmly. Calm down.
'You're not mad?'
'Why would I be mad?'
Foggy's confusion is starting to overpower his panic. 'Because you can feel ah... everything. Um...'
Matt takes a step towards him. Am I mad?
He feels Foggy poking at his emotions and Matt tries to push the relevant ones forward. ...No. Wait, Matt?
By now Matt is in Foggy's personal space and he pulls his friend to his feet. 'Could... could you say it?' A part of Matt thinks he's imagining everything; that this is a figment of a dream. But if he hears it aloud...
There's a long pause. Then, 'Matt... Matt, I love you.'
It feels like every Christmas Matt's never had have just exploded an emotion in his chest. 'I know,' Matt manages to say, surprise and absolute joy in his voice because he. Does. Know.
'Oh you did not just Star Wars me there Buddy!' Foggy sounds as punch drunk as Matt feels because he loves Matt and Matt loves him.
'What? No. I mean. I know.' It dawns on Matt that using words, imprecise words, is not helping. So he pushes forward every piece of joy Foggy's ever given him; every bit of affection he's felt and the memories of every single time Matt thought 'I love you' about Foggy and hated that he'd never hear it back.
Foggy stumbles - physically stumbles - at Matt's thoughts. Then he rallies and suddenly Matt is drowning in warmth and affection and love; all pointed at him. Foggy's memories are as numerous as Matt's and he doesn't try to even think about sorting through them - there'll be time for that later! - but just basks in the connection and feels, for one moment, like someone worth loving.
It only dawns on Matt that he's been kissing Foggy for a while now when it becomes hard to focus from the lack of breathing. He pulls back, noting that someone - or both of them - had the wisdom to wrap their arms around another.
Foggy pants into Matt's mouth. 'Can I hear it?'
'I love you,' Matt says instantly and he feels Foggy's delight at the words.
It's no one in particular's decision to lean back in for another kiss. This time, Matt's not lost in the sea of emotions/thoughts/LOVE so he's able to pay more attention to the feel of Foggy's lips on his; the taste of his mouth - urgh cheeseballs, why Foggy why - and the feel of Matt's soft lips on h... oh wait.
Matt breaks it off before the feedback loop of the kiss can overwhelm them. Even so, he's definitely starting to be turned on in a way that far exceeds what he'd expect of a relatively chase kiss.
'This could be fun,' Foggy smirks and Matt makes a face at him.
'It'll be fun right up until we can't manage a kiss in public without a meltdown.' A rush of joy/arousal/glee/mischievousness runs through Foggy and Matt groans. 'No Foggy.'
Foggy shrugs. 'Practice makes perfect?'
Matt glares but leans on for a kiss anyway.
Their lips have barely touched when a scream pierces the night. They jump apart. Matt instantly pinpoints the position of the woman who's begging for the voices in her head to stop. Oh no.
'I heard that,' Foggy says. 'With my ears.' It's him, isn't it?
Yes. 'It's close.' Matt's already reaching for his bag, where the suit is hidden. 'Stay here, turn the lights off as soon as I go.'
Be safe.
Matt can't resist one final kiss. I promise.
Now go be a hero!

It's slowly dawning on Foggy exactly what he's done. He's signed Matt up the Avengers; people who had no problems manipulating them into a confession.

FOGWELL'S? *even more curious* Are they going to spar?! Is Matt gonna teach Foggy to box? Is he gonna show off his mad skillz in a safe, contained environment?!

I AM BEAMING SO HARD RIGHT NOW
Omfg, Yee is that close to them?! OMG MATT DON'T GET HURT. Or, I mean, get hurt, because whump is awesome and it'd be a double-whammy this time with Foggy looped in, but don't get SERIOUSLY hurt. ;D Omg, I hope defeating Yee doesn't reverse their telepathic connection!
I love you. ;_; I love this. I love everything right now! This is so good! I can't stop grinning!! Thank you!!! :D

Awesome idea about the practice at Fogwell's gym. Makes a lot of sense and it was nice to see the boys perfect their merge so Matt can daredevil.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-01 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)Matt's barely out the door - lights flicked off on the way - when Foggy realises he's just signed up to be the hero's girl- no, boyfriend, fuck gender roles he's the hero's boyfriend. Oh shit he's the hero's boyfriend. Doing the waiting game thing. Again. Huh. Not much has changed here then.
There's a touch of amusement from Matt but he's mostly trying to focus, so with a great effort, Foggy pulls his emotions in and tries to ignore Matt's. Confusion? We just practiced this.
Not risking you getting hurt if I fail at it.
There's a sense of reluctant agreement from Matt but he's not backing off. Before Foggy has a chance to be scared; his phone rings.
He doesn't get to speak when he answers it. 'Mr Nelson? Bruce here. Tony's surveillance picked up Yee entering Hell's Kitchen twenty minutes ago. We're on our way there now.'
'Matt's already on it.'
Just then, a wave of angerpainfailurelossANGERANGERANGER runs through Foggy and drives him to his knees.
Matt! he cries as he unthinkingly opens his connection to his friend. They're standing in an alley and there's a body at their feet.
Her heart isn't beating. They're too late. Suddenly the tiny part of them that is Foggy, which had been clinging to his self, releases and he buries himself in them, hoping the Devil in Matt can become his too if only for a little while. They are going to take this man - this monster down.
'Took you long enough.' A man - Yee? - is above them, standing on a roof. They can sense the heat of something in his hands, a gun by the smell of metal. Yee laughs as he jumps down, putting himself into MattFoggy's striking distance. But they don't move. They have to get him talking. Just so that before they destroy him, they can know why he dared touch their city.
The part of them that is Foggy absentmindedly hangs up their phone, rising to their knees. They should be together, two parts as one, so their body leaves the gym, despite the nagging of a voice that might be from the part of them that is Matt. The streets are dark, unnaturally so, but the part of them that is Matt is used to darkness; finding their path in this sudden invasion of night is no hardship.
'Your method of message delivery is faulty,' the part of them that is Matt snaps at Yee, allowing their anger to coat his voice. 'Dead bodies don't say much.'
Yee smiles, something that the Foggy part of them can only just see from their new position at the end of the alleyway. They hide that body behind a dumpster for safety. 'Got your attention though.'
'You really shouldn't have.' The part of them that is Foggy makes the Matt mouth frown. 'Why would you even want our attention?'
They see Yee blink at the pronoun but he shakes his head and keeps smiling. Absently they note the gun is pointed at them - Matt vaguely notes that eyesight does have its uses- but they don't actually care. They're not staying still because they're being threatened. 'I didn't, not at first.' He laughs. 'You didn't even notice the first bodies, I'll bet. Homeless scum.'
'Worth a thousand of you,' they growl and take a step forward. The gun rises.
'Stay there.' They stop and raise their hands. 'You didn't care, I know you didn't. And their deaths served a higher purpose; proof that this weapon of Hydra was ready for its glorious debut.' Anger, deep, destructive and unfamiliar surges through Matt and for a moment, they are he; and Foggy is just Foggy crouched behind a dumpster watching his friend face off with a monster. But then Matt channels his anger into his patience, waiting for the right moment and Foggy can move forward turning he into they again.
'And you needed our attention for that?'
Yee jerks in anger. 'NO! You ruined it.' He waves the gun around, and they track it both with their eyes and their senses; seamlessly processing the conflicting perspectives into one. A distant part of them that is still Foggy wonders if Matt's practice with his abilities are helping with this. The rest of them is too focused on the gun to care.
'You ruined it,' Yee repeats, his tone still angry but with a note of defeat.
They search Matt's memories for how they ruined anything but there's nothing they can remember. 'How?'
Yee's eyes actually boggle in anger. They are reluctantly impressed. 'HOW? HOW? You do not remember the day you cut off the heads of Hydra?'
They shrug and separate, so Matt can speak alone. 'I don't tend to remember specific assholes, as a rule. Is that it? You're killing people because I brought your comrades to the justice they deserved?'
Foggy tries to surge forward again but Matt pushes him back. I'm going to fight him soon. Get out of here
Foggy ignores him and tries to figure out what move to make now.
********
IDIOT
Foggy ignores him, pushing at his mind for a way into the space when they are one mind in two parts. Keeping him out is harder than anything Matt's ever done. But he has to... Foggy walked himself here on autopilot just moments ago, because of this joint-ness and only when separate has it dawned on Matt how stupid a move that was.
Better together Buddy. He sends over the memory of a phone call, one Matt had faintly registered on his way over here. Avengers are coming.
Matt cocks his head. They're already here. He shares the sound - faint, but getting louder every moment - of what has to be Iron Man's repulsors and a nearly inaudible jet engine. A moment later, Foggy hears the repulsors.
So does Yee. 'You called the Avengers?' he growls.
'No, you did. I hear they're not too fond of Hydra.' Foggy shares the image of Yee trying to peer through the artificial darkness to spot Iron Man and Matt takes his chance.
He lunges forward, aiming for the gun. Yee's not focused so Matt's most of the way to him before he even manages to move his hand to the trigger. He gets in one shot before Matt's on him.
It misses. The force of Matt's lunge puts them both on the ground, Matt on top. With a practiced move, Matt disarms him and throws the gun to the side. He feels Foggy track its movement and debate getting it.
Stay safe! Matt cries as Yee manages to get his legs between him and Matt, and push Matt off in a very skilled move. Shit.
Foggy is pushing at his mind again. Bettertogether/letmehelp/helpless/Fogwell'sgym/powerfultogether/loveyou. Matt sighs but lets him in.
They rise and immediately throw themselves into a flip, to get move power to the kick aimed at Yee's head. Yee flies backwards, onto the ground and they follow, punching him as soon as they're close enough. But he's clearly well trained, blocking the worst of Matt's blows and aiming a kick they only just dodge.
The punch throws them back into he again, for a moment, as Foggy adjusts to the unexpected pain. But then he's there again, urging them into some of their more complicated moves which it's quickly clear Yee has no ability to defend against.
'Hey!' Stark calls and Yee looks up. They take advantage, delivering a right hook that their - your noright no, our everyright - Dad would've been proud of. Yee goes down. He groans but stays down.
'Huh. Nice punch.' Stark lands and they hear the hiss as he raises his face plate. Still can't believe that's what Iron Man looks like. Matt comments as they slip back into themselves.
You were really missing out Buddy.
Matt nods at Stark absently. 'Police should be here soon. This darkness isn't natural.' Behind him, he hears/feels/is Foggy moving out from behind his dumpster. He's carefully checking out the alleyway, trying to locate the gun that Matt lost track of in the confusion of the fight. The darkness is making it hard but Matt's got all his focus on Stark right now and can't spare his senses. Don't worry, I'll behelpfulusefulneeded find it
'Nope. Natasha and Bruce are dealing with it. I'm only here in case you needed the help.' Stark pokes at Yee. 'I'll take this one with me.'
Anger surges through them. 'No. You won't.' Foggy shares the surprised look Stark is giving Matt, barely visible because of the light but also because Foggy's now on his hands and knees, looking under the dumpster near Yee for his stupid gun. 'He's going to face justice here, in Hell's Kitchen. Not be vanished from existence and the rule of law.'
Stark raises an eyebrow, something that Matt again only knows because Foggy's shared it with him. Asshole Agreed. 'You actually believe that. In justice.'
'I wouldn't do what I do if I didn't.'
'No!' Foggy cries and it takes Matt a moment to realise he's spoken aloud. Matt immediately focuses his attention on his friend and freezes.
Yee's crawled a few feet to the left and Matt can smell the metal and sense the heat of the gun in his hands. Foggy's just another foot or so away from him, still on his knees but with his hands raised.
Sorry Matt.
No lovepanic NO!
'I know you,' Yee whispers. 'The fatso from before. Guess you're out of luck now.'
He fires and the blast hits Foggy dead on. Matt's moving before he can think, throwing Yee into the metal of the dumpster and barely caring about the bones he just broke. Instead he's falling to his knees in front of Foggy, grabbing at his shoulders.
For a long moment there's peace, as if nothing is going to change. Well that was a-
Then Foggy's thoughts/feelings/self cut out as he screams at the invading world.

- I love this. :D Love that Matt still is deferring this to Foggy, trusting Foggy's judgment call over his own.
Batton? Barklet? Bar-something. Hawkeye works. Annoyed/whereismemory? Perfectionist. Amused/annoyed/bestfriend/amuseannoy
- I adore these little things, the little teasing exchanges that are such a mark of two people who just know each other so well. :D
Stark is making a lot of computerised beeping noises
- As in he's working with machinery making beeping noises, or he is making them with his mouth as his tech is silent? Because that second one is a freaking adorable mental image... XD
JARVIS sounds amused. 'I doubt that is possible as I lack an ass to kick but I will endeavour to not invade your privacy for Sir's every whim.'
- LMAO. I love JARVIS. Although yeah, that's not really reassuring that he won't invade their privacy for SOME of Tony's whims... They're all just so pushy, such strong personalities trying to be a team, forgetting (or not caring) that while they may want all the details that doesn't mean they're entitled to them, and that respect for privacy is a thing. XD (Minus Steve, because... I love Steve, and because respect and the little guys and people's rights are so important to him!)
Re: Fill: Clear and Honest Communication 11/15(?)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-20 02:11 am (UTC)(link)Matt and Foggy need to take a class in lying, seriously. Or even one in keeping a poker face. Improvisation would also be an acceptable skill for them to learn.
Yup, exactly. They were already a lot in each other's pockets before; now it's doubled.
I adore Clint but yes, he really didn't think it through. To be fair, he was just following Natasha's plan but also, he should've thought it through.
Clint is always good... except when mind controlled.
Thanks! I love playing with devil imagery and Matt. =)
Oh yeah definitely but it's also kinda a bit ableist... Like the first thought isn't "how did you do that?" but "you can't be blind and do that!". "What the fuck" is a fine instinct, it's the "what the fuck; you can't be blind and do that" instinct that should really be examined.
=D Matt trusts Foggy way more than he trusts himself.
Hehe, thanks! They're half the fun of writing this friendship. =D
Um... the first. I think. I might have to edit this sentence before I put it up on AO3 because it's confusing me. Even if the second image is adorable.
I adore JARVIS so much. But yeah, he's definitely a very powerful intelligence that's loyal to Stark. A man who has no concept of 'not allowed' when it comes to hacking into electrical things. (That is definitely Steve but I also think Steve might think he's a right to know the exact details of Matt's abilities if Matt works with them. If only because otherwise, in Steve's mind, he might be a danger)
