Yay! Thank you! This is lovely!

I love how you have Matt agonizing and over thinking whether he’s going to disrupt Gao’s operation or not. I think it really shows his struggle with idea of consequences and the responsibility associated with them. He’s thoughtful in a way that I would have liked to have seen just a moment in the series.

Yet Matt’s impact has been small, the risk of collateral damage so limited he could safely pretend it does not exist. Guh…this kind of floored me because I know that I’m fairly critical of the TV series and Matt—but this explanation seems to fit so perfectly with the logic that could be driving Matt. I seriously had a “oh,” moment because it makes sense to me—I couldn’t fathom how disillusioned Matt could be about the effects of his actions and the collateral damage that he leaves in his wake and then this… You’ve made me forgive him (and his canon writers). So, thank you for this. :-)

“Like I was so sure that boiling instant noodles for ten minutes instead of two would make it better cooked so it would taste better? Wasn’t the case.” Ah, Foggy. I love him. I love how you have Foggy lawyering Matt with his as of yet, unnamed third option. (Lawyered!) And how Matt uses Foggy a little bit as his moral compass. And perhaps I’m seeing what I want to see here, but I love that despite Foggy’s insatiably optimistic personality, he kind of seems to understand how real life works—consequences. (And am also seeing what I want to see here, but ‘consequences’ seem to be a foreign concept especially contrived by life to inconvenience Matt with the way he says it and the he’s been hearing that word a lot recently. It’s a thought that makes me giggle.)

The interaction between Wesley and Matt… Aww… Matt being polite. Wesley making his own entertainment at Matt’s expense… There’s so much, too much that I love about this, but the translation of my squeals of delight to text is coming out a bit indecipherable. But I do love it. I love how Matt’s question has Wesley analyzing his own discomfort with dealing with the heroin ring on his own at the expense of the blind immigrants and relying on SHIELD to ultimately clean up that mess.
Ooh…I wonder what’s in the works?

I love how Wesley, while illuminating the faults in Matt’s logic, manages to use Matt’s brand of justice without having to alter anything other than his ideology…if that makes sense? Clearly Matt is aware of it and it chafes him.

Matt’s still skeptical about Wesley, understandably. Matt’s still naïve since he has difficulty grasping that Wesley the man he was, and even the man he is, could be an agent of a government agency—especially one that employs people like the Black Widow.

I am very much looking forward to their face-to-face meeting and am wondering who Markovich is.

author!anon here and thank you so, so much for this lovely response!!! I may have read over it half a dozen times and I am so relieved that the story is working and the elements I've been trying to communicate are coming across. A lot of the fun in this pairing (and this au) for me comes from playing these two's ideological difference off of each other and exploring the questions that the show left unaddressed. They're so incredibly different and it's interesting to throw them together and see what happens. I am just so glad everything seems to be working.
