"Matt! Catch!"
Letty's voice boomed in the garage as she sauntered over to where Matt was perched on the hood of a beaten-down Honda. "Nah, I'm just fuckin' with you," she laughed, as she did every time she pulled that joke. She hopped easily onto the hood next to him, inspecting the latest book he had busied himself with, then took one of his hands from the page. "Sorry, kiddo, duty calls," she told him, wrapping his fingers around a large wrench.
Matt chuckled. "What seems to be the trouble today, Letty?"
Letty hit him playfully upside the head. "In case you've forgotten, we've got Race Wars in two days. You gotta take a look at my ride before then. Wanna be sure it'll murder anyone who so much as looks at me sideways."
He sighed fondly and slid down the hood. "Well, I've got a reputation to maintain, don't I? One murdering car, coming right up."
"Yeah, yeah, come on, car whisperer." She held out her elbow for Matt to take, and the two stepped out into the driveway.
- - -
"I still haven't figured out how he does it," Brian conceded to Dom from the porch.
"Tell the truth, us either. Jesse started showing him the ropes soon as we took him in- we were just happy they took to each other so quick. Had no idea he'd have such a knack for it."
Matt grinned from where he was bent over the hood, graciously pretending not to have heard the praise. He didn't mind that his family forgot about his exceptional hearing in cases like this. (He also liked knowing that he confused Brian, the cocky son of a bitch.)
Dusting off his hands, he turned to his partner in crime. "What's the verdict, Jesse?"
Matt could hear him rolling a screwdriver between his palms restlessly as he spoke. "Yeah, looks good, new component fits perfect, I think this is gonna- what'd you say- murder the competition." He nodded vigorously.
Footsteps approached the two just then, and Matt knew from the gait that it was Brian. He tensed as the other man put a hand on his shoulder. "Some crazy talent you got, kid. Gonna get your own garage when you get outta high school?"
"I'm gonna be a lawyer," he replied stiffly.
"Huh." He seemed about to say something else, but a grating ringtone snapped him out of it. Matt put a hand to one of his ears and Brian apologized before hurrying to the end of the driveway to take the call.
"Dude, what's your problem with Brian?" Jesse asked softly. "Is it 'cause he's sweet on Mia? 'Cause like, Vince and Dom would kick his ass clear across the border before you could even get to him if..."
Jesse was still talking, but Matt had focused in on Brian's phone call. Between all the other noises (traffic, the radio, Jesse rambling in his ear), he could only make out bits and pieces: "...not yet...", "...more time...", "...raid..."- wait, what? Raid?
"Jesse, shut up for a sec," Matt snapped, but by the time he had tuned back into Brian's call, he was hanging up.
"Who was that?" Matt asked casually as Brian headed back up to the house.
"Telemarketer," he replied smoothly, not pausing as he walked on by.

PART 2: in which we get a look at race wars, matts suspicions, and we begin to diverge from the movie plot
- - -
The drive to Race Wars was filled with awkward silence. Matt had opted to ride with Dom- a change from his usual driver of choice, Jesse. (Dom was clearly relieved by this choice, and Matt knew he was probably still sore about the time Jesse took him out to the desert and let him try driving.) He had chosen to get time alone with Dom for a reason, though... He was just having trouble saying it. There isn't enough proof, he fumed. I just need to catch him doing something- anything.
"You're awfully quiet," Dom said carefully, and that was all it took.
"Brian's lying to you," he blurted.
The car slowed almost imperceptibly. "About what?" he asked slowly, heartbeat betraying nothing.
"I... I don't know yet," he admitted, mentally kicking himself. "I've got bits and pieces. A feeling," he finished lamely. He turned sightless eyes out the window and slumped, waiting.
At last, Dom sighed. "Look, Matt. I wasn't the guy's biggest fan when we met. Hell, I was suspicious of him, too. And you think I like how Mia looks at him?" He paused. "But fact is, he hasn't given me a serious reason not to trust him. I'm gonna need more than 'bits and pieces' before I do... whatever it is you would want me to do."
Matt swallowed hard before continuing in a rush. "I... I heard him talking on the phone when I was working on Letty's car. He said something about a raid. I think that's what he was working on when you caught him spying on Tran a few weeks ago." He slumped even further down, suddenly wishing Jesse were here. He hated going against Dom's opinion on anything. Though it had been almost six years since they'd taken him in, a part of him couldn't help but remember Stick's punishments for talking out of turn (and especially for being wrong).
Maybe he flinched involuntarily, or maybe Dom remembered. Either way, he put a hand on Matt's shoulder. "I'm glad you told me," he assured him, and Matt relaxed. There were another couple miles of silence. "The 'spying' thing made me uneasy," he admitted. "Since then, he's asked to be a part of our... second job."
"He knows?"
"He suspects. I told him the next couple weeks would decide things. We get through Race Wars without incident... I might take him on. One stupid move aside, he's been trustworthy. And trustworthy people are hard to find in our... profession."
Matt's silence was a dead giveaway about how he felt. Dom's heartbeat- he wanted to say something- was the only sound in the car for a while.
"I want you to come to me if he does anything that doesn't seem right," he said finally.
"Will do."
"I'm counting on you to be my eyes."
It didn't take super-senses to know that Dom was grinning ear-to-ear. "Just focus on driving," Matt snapped in mock annoyance. "Leave the joking to the professionals."
"Sure, boss," Dom laughed, and hit the gas.
- - -
Matt was popular at the races he attended. At first he was mostly a spectacle- a blind mechanic?- but he quickly earned his reputation in a very different way. It started at the first race Dom took him to when he was 12, a year after he'd been adopted. A particularly rowdy spectator had been making advances on Trinity, one of the female racers. Embarrassed about being consistently spurned, he grabbed her arm after one of the races. As soon as he heard the sharp "fuck off" from several yards away, he sprang into action. Two minutes later, he was silently thanking Stick's brutal training when the other man was whimpering on the ground.
Since then, he'd been making the underground circuit a much nicer place for the women who raced. (If he had to break a couple noses to do it, well, so be it.) It made him the star of their racing group, much to Dom's half-joking annoyance. Jesse insisted he should be flattered by the attention he'd received since then- Matt, however, found it more awkward than anything.
Such was the case at Race Wars. "Back off, Pixie, he's still underage," Dom deadpanned as he elbowed his way through the crowd, Matt close behind attempting to politely remove the woman's hand from his shoulder. "Another day in paradise, huh?"
Matt laughed. "It's kind of flattering... I guess."
"You know, if you didn't feel the need to play Prince Charming to every woman in a fifteen-mile radius, you might get left alone every once in a while."
"Well, I guess someone taught me to respect women."
"Apparently that was a mistake."
"I'm telling Letty you said that."
"You wound me, Matt."
Eventually they fought through the crowd to the front. "Just in time," Jesse called, running toward them. "Letty's up."
Of course Letty's race was a massive success. She did a donut before hopping out of the car to collect the stack of cash her opponent had thrown down in disgust. Matt ran toward her, half-guided by Jesse.
"Fuck yeah!" Letty cheered, throwing an arm around each of them. "Couldn't have done it without my mechanics!" She pointed to Dom. "You can congratulate me later." Matt and some spectators within earshot whistled. Jesse, as usual, had already focused his attention elsewhere... But this time it worried Matt. He could tell from the cologne- Johnny Tran had just walked by.
"Jesse," Matt hissed, beginning to panic when he realized what was about to happen. "If you're gonna do what I think you're gonna do-"
He heard Jesse's pink slip rustling as he waved it in the air. Too late.
- - -
In the end, even Brian begged Jesse not to race Tran, and every one of them steeled their hearts for the imminent loss. Hearing Jesse's choked breathing and erratic heartbeat as he handed Tran the keys made Matt turn away, desperate for something else to focus on.
That something else came in the form of a raging Tran, seemingly not content to just take his car and leave. "The cops raided my garage!" he screamed, sending spittle everywhere. "You narced on me!" Matt stepped up to throw a punch, but Dom put a hand out in front of him. Tran's gang was already there to haul him away.
Dom turned to Matt, then Brian, whose heartbeat was out of control. "Brian," Dom began, deadly calm. "Do you know anything about this?"
There was a moment of what seemed like complete silence from the crowd... and then a shot rang out.
Johnny Tran had broken away from his men and was now standing in front of the group. "That was a warning shot!" he yelled. "The next one goes in your skull!"
Matt had one chance. Summoning all the speed he'd ever worked for, he dove straight for Tran's gun. The shock caught Tran off guard, and he managed to knock the gun out of his reach. Tran had size, but Matt had training, and the scuffle ended quickly with the larger man pinned down easily. A gun cocked behind them, and fired into the sand next to Tran's head.
"That was a warning shot," Brian mocked. "Now get out of here." Tran scrambled in the dirt until Matt let him up. Brian stepped up next to Matt as they watched him retreat. "Nice right hook."
"Nice shot."
Animosity momentarily forgotten, Matt held up a hand slowly. There was a pause as Brian probably wondered what the hell he was doing. Suddenly, it registered.
The high-five rang out amidst the chaos, and Both Brian and Matt, despite everything, found themselves laughing.
It was at that moment the cops showed up.

The police station wasn't really a new place to Matt. Quiet and studious as he normally was, he also had an unfortunate habit of picking fights with just about anyone that caused his family trouble. Rude customers, sore losers, anyone who didn't speak to Mia respectfully... Yes, he'd memorized the clack of heels on the tile floor and the metallic scraping of handcuffs.
The motley crew in the holding cell was certainly a sight. Letty, Dom, Matt, Jesse, and Brian, along with several other unfortunate racers, were crammed into the small area, shifting nervously. It was enough to make Matt claustrophobic.
Before long, an officer entered the room. "Toretto," he read from a clipboard. Dom stepped to the front of the pack. "You're comin' with me. Rest of you, get outta my sight." They shuffled out in single file, relief palpable in the air. Matt and the crew headed up the rear.
Dom had been taken to an empty room, and was being questioned by an officer Matt didn't recognize. He was loud, abrasive, talked a lot of shit. Told Dom he'd had his eye on him since he got out of prison and was just waiting for him to screw up.
Matt began to memorize his voice, scent, footsteps. If assaulting an officer blew his chance at law school, well, there were worse things.
Letty came around the corner and put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey. This might be a while. Jesse's already not doin' so hot, since, y'know, the car thing. I'm gonna take him home."
"Where is he?"
"Already waiting in the car. I know you and him are joined at the hip. but... I don't think talking to him's gonna help right now."
Matt nodded. Some things, talking couldn't solve. "What about Dom, though?"
She sighed. This sucks, but... we've been in worse situations. They're gonna try and shake him down, scare him, but truth is the only charge they've got him on is the racing."
Matt listened in on Dom again. The officer wasn't letting up. "I'm still gonna stay," he said firmly.
"Yeah, figures," Letty sighed fondly. "Brian's car is still parked out front, so he's around here somewhere. Call him so he doesn't leave without you."
"Sure."
And with that, Matt was alone with his thoughts. What Letty had said about the cops having nothing on Dom was technically true, but he still wasn't well-liked. The officer interrogating him seemed determined to get him on a more serious charge, and although Dom wasn't likely to just tell him about their... second job, he was worried the man would hurt Dom trying to make it happen.
He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. It had been a long day already, shaping up to be an equally long night.
"Mind if I sit down?"
The strangely chipper voice snapped Matt out of his thoughts. He nodded, barely acknowledging him.
"Is that who you're waiting on?" The man (boy, probably, sounded about Matt's age) was likely pointing to the window where anyone else would be able to see the officer slam his fists on the table across from Dom.
"He's my brother," Matt replied hesitantly, unsure of why this total stranger was talking to him at all.
The boy whistled. "Don't know what he did to piss the cops off so bad, but they're really putting the pressure on him. They can't actually get him for much, but my boss and I showed up just in case."
"Your boss?" Matt turned to him, and immediately heard his heartbeat speed up wildly. Weird.
"Wow. Um, I mean, yeah, my boss." He paused for a moment, heartbeat steadying. "Drew Pendleton, one half of Pendleton & McNeil. Defense attorney, and one of Dominic Toretto's friends from way back. He keeps an eye on things sometimes... mostly when his girlfriend calls us. Makes sure he's not getting into too much trouble."
Matt wanted to say you don't know the half of it, but settled for "That's... nice of you both."
The two sat in dead silence for a couple of minutes. Matt barely needed his enhanced senses to tell that his new companion's heartbeat was screaming "Say something!" Maybe he's afraid of saying something stupid to the blind kid, he decided. It certainly wouldn't be the first time. He decided to cut him some slack.
"So..." Matt began casually. "You're not Pendleton, and something tells me you're not McNeil."
He made a sound feigning offense. "What makes you say that? I could totally be a lawyer."
"Please, you sound maybe sixteen."
"I'll have you know I look twenty-five," he huffed. "A good twenty-five. Like, a really macho twenty-five." Matt hoped the other man was looking in his direction so he could see the eye roll. "Okay, fine," he pouted. "I'm seventeen."
Matt counted off on his fingers. "Seventeen, not a lawyer... What does that make you, exactly?"
"Foggy Nelson," he introduced himself at last. "Secretary at law."
The note of pride in Foggy's voice made Matt grin in spite of everything that had happened. "Matt Toretto. Murdock-Toretto, actually. Adopted. Long story. Occupation..." He shrugged. "Delinquent, mostly."
"Matt Murdock-Toretto, delinquent," Foggy repeated. "It's got a nice ring to it, anyway."
"Secretary probably pays better."
- - -
Foggy had a contagious laugh, as it turned out, and made good conversation once he collected himself from whatever earlier anxiety he had. Talking to him sort of helped him tune out the myriad of background noise that had begun to give him a headache. He had even managed to stop worrying about Dom too much. After all, he had lawyer friends.
"God, what time is it?" Foggy asked at last. "And where did Mr. Pendleton go, anyway?"
Matt tapped his watch, which read out the time. "Nine-thirty," he repeated. "We've been here for almost three hours."
"Damn, they must really be going after- Wait, where is he?"
Matt started to ask who, but then he realized: Dom was no longer in the questioning room. How did I miss that? He quickly extended his senses out past the lobby, but was overwhelmed momentarily by the noise coming from every direction.
Foggy noticed that he had flinched. "Hey, he's gotta be here somewhere," he assured him. "He's probably just talking to my boss."
"Yeah, I'm not worried," Matt lied.
He heard the footsteps about ten seconds before Foggy said "Speak of the devil!" Dom and Mr. Pendleton were talking casually, heartbeats bearing no indication of trouble.
Foggy hurried over to them. "What's the verdict?"
Dom sounded tired, but the note of triumph in his voice was unmistakable. "Charges dropped."
"See?" Foggy was back at Matt's side, smile evident in his voice. "He's got a hell of a lawyer!"
Dom put a hand on Matt's shoulder. "You shoulda gone home with Letty," he chided.
"Guess I'm a glutton for punishment." He turned his head toward Foggy's voice, now talking to his boss. "Company wasn't bad."
"Huh." There was something strange in Dom's voice, but before he could question it, Dom's phone rang.
Matt's attention drifted to Foggy's conversation. "Weirdest thing," Pendleton was saying. "Some guy came in, asked to speak to the officer in private... They were really hashing it out in there. Next thing you know, though, he's off scot-free. Not that I'm complaining..."
"That was Brian," Dom called, striding back across the lobby. "He's parked out front. The hell is he still doing here?"
"Same thing I am?" Matt suggested.
"You change your tune about him?"
"Well, near-death experiences will do that to you."
Dom sighed. "Don't remind me. Anyway, I guess it was for the best. They might have let me off, but they still got my car. Might be a few days before I get it back." He stretched and cracked his knuckles. "That took way too goddamn long. Let's get outta here."
"Wait, hold up!"
Matt turned toward Foggy's voice. His heartbeat was erratic again; he was fidgety. "Look at that," Dom announced suddenly. Another phone call." He heard the flip of the phone and his too-casual footsteps straight out the front door, and then they were alone.
Foggy stepped up to face Matt (a little too close, maybe). "So... This was fun, huh?"
The corner of Matt's mouth turned up. "I've had worse nights."
He could practically feel Foggy's palms sweating. "So, uh... maybe you want to... do this again sometime? Somewhere a little nicer than the police station lobby?"
And suddenly, everything clicked. The heartbeat, the stammering, the sweaty palms...
I'm the biggest idiot on the face of the earth.
He must have hesitated too long. "Or- I mean- God, you probably have to leave, your brother's waiting, let's just forget-"
Matt grabbed Foggy's arm too quickly, forgetting he wasn't really supposed to know exactly where it was. "Foggy." Foggy froze, and Matt paused maybe a moment longer than strictly necessary. He smiled. "Pick me up tomorrow night?"
Foggy's heartbeat didn't sound even remotely healthy anymore. "Yeah! Sure! I'll, uh- here, gimme your phone number-"
- - -
Later, as Brian drove them all home, Matt asked what the phone call earlier was about.
There was no hiding the grin in Dom's voice. "Telemarketer," he replied, feigning nonchalance with very little success. "So... Foggy, huh?"
This was going to be a long drive.
