There's an unmarked envelope on his desk.

Not the scary kind. Bright purple, small, the seal flap tucked in instead of stuck with anything.

Foggy opens it, and is then forced to imagine Matt, in a store – an actual store – asking an employee to help him find the most assholeish birthday card.

I thought we agreed we'd grow old together, says the front, under a weird "artsy" black and white photograph of fishing poles on a pier.

Inside: Who said you could take a head start?

Ha fucking ha.

...Under that, though.

Under that.

Letters pressed in so deep they're almost more readable as grooves in the paper – penciled, large and blocky and so... so legible it takes Foggy a second to even recognize the handwriting:

Happy birthday Foggy. Love Matt.

"...Dude." That asshole. That asshole.

Foggy gets up, marches into Matt's office. "Matt! What - you hate writing things by hand!"

Matt grins, smug, and pauses the movement of his fingers over the case files. "Well, you know. I had an extra... hour. Also, I'm broke, so. That's all you're getting."

Foggy lets maybe one too many beats of silence pass before he answers: "Yeah, well. So am I. I'll probably give it back to you for your birthday."

Matt just laughs.

Foggy goes back to his desk.

Damn it.

He's keeping this forever.

Awww, now I'm all melty.

Aw this is so cute and kind of a tiny bit sad, because Matt has the handwriting of a 9-year-old.

I imagine anyone trying to comment to that effect might get a response like

"My handwriting is the handwriting of whatever age I am, because it's mine, and yes I am using the situation to my advantage to get out of buying an actual birthday present, what of it."

He lost his sight at 9-10, so he never had the chance to improve his handwriting in an organic way; I think I went through about 5 different writing styles before settling on the one I use today.

Also, ages 9-10 is right around the time when kids were taught how to write in cursive, which they may or may not have seen as necessary to teach him, so he'd probably just default to block letters on the odd occasion when he'd need to write something. There's also the fact that Matt grew up during the time of personal computers, meaning there'd probably be less of a focus put on teaching a blind child how to write correctly with a straight ruler and more focus on teaching him how to type on a keyboard.

Oh I know, I wasn't saying I think Matt would have perfect handwriting or anything. I just object (and he might or might not, I can't know that but we are kind of in the business of trying to get inside his head around here lol) to terminology like "___ of a 9 year old"

To me personally it comes off as a little infantilizing and reminds me of when people say things like "she has the mind of a child" or "he's 32 but mentally 12" etc. ymmv.

Yep! I think he'd take offence to the insinuation that he was lacking in some way, or that or warranted any type of pity response (Oh, poor Matt, whose writing is like a time capsule of the child whose life was changed forever, wahh).

I mean, even for sighted children now (in RL), hand-writing is going the way of the dinosaurs. At least in the elementary school near where I live, the focus is put more on teaching them how to type with laptops or ipad than actually taking notes with pencil and paper. /tangent

yeah totally with you on the infantilising shtick. matt would need to write things like signatures and notes to foggy and stuff so he'd have plenty reasons to practice and for his handwriting to develop. HOWEVER. he would have almost no reason to draw pictures. so i am Very Interested in him essentially doing crappy kid style doodles, or abusing his powers and just doing stick figures knowing nobody can call him on it (except foggy).
