I don't think he would have to give them any excuses, right? If a doctor/nurse suspects an adult is being abused, I don't think they have any authority to do anything about it, right?

Yeah I'm fairly certain they can't do anything if it's just an adult.

somebody from the east coast talk to me bout your domestic violence laws, BUT as i understand it:

in California, doctors are mandated reporters, which means they must bring a police officer in if they get verbal confirmation of abuse, but they can use their discretion if they suspect abuse.

again, only in California, far as i know, and this is "the way my park ranger/cop friends explained it," the deal is: because so many victims of abuse refuse to press charges, police officers can use physical evidence (like pictures of bruises, broken bones, etc) to charge people with assault even if the person assaulted does not press charges.

Actually, there are mandatory reporting laws for hospitals to report wounds caused by gun or knife to police, regardless of whether domestic abuse is suspected. There is also mandatory reporting laws regarding abuse of people with disabilities, regardless of age. Not sure what the law in New York is tho. It varies from state to state.

Also, it should be noted that Matt is under no obligation to actually cooperate with police. I hear stories in the news all the time about guys who land in the hospital with stab or gun wounds who refuse to give statements.

Anon thinking about filling this is very grateful for that link.

I took a bit of a closer look at it and it turns out the PDF is for an organization looking to expand mandatory reporting to more states, so it's not as comprehensive as I thought it would be. Most of the relevant info is in the beginning. You should be able to find out more by just Googling mandated reporters of domestic violence/abuse of people with disabilities in new york tho. Also, I think mandatory reporting of knife or gun wounds is universal in all states, so there's that at least. :-)

This might be wrong and it's been a while since I've seen it, but wouldn't it then count as a 'special victims' and bring out the SVU team?
