FRENEMIES

They totally like each other but they are also annoyed by each other every once in a while (Brett's such a stick in the mud, Foggy thinks. Foggy's such an irresponsible free spirit, Brett sighs) and also probably had a bunch of fights when they were kids and never got out of the habit. Also I think they're amused at having a "nemesis" even though really they are friends. Foggy and Brett probably knew each other because their parents were friends. (I don't know why, but I kind of assumed Brett has a single mom, probably because only Bess is mentioned in the show even if that doesn't make sense.) And I think that in the beginning Foggy and Brett DID hate each other when they were little, but eventually proximity forced them to become friends and now they're just really amused by pretending to be enemies. Brett disapproves of Foggy's life choices. (But he'll also be kind to him when he's upset and he'll be protective of him and he'll even be protective of the kid Foggy dragged home over Thanksgiving one time and who never left.

OMG, can you imagine Brett taking a page from Foggy's book and also being protective of Matt, just obviously in a more detached you're a friend of my friend and also a disaster way??? And Brett will also secretly think that Foggy's really funny and be nice about him when Foggy isn't around like yes I have a friend who is a VERY GOOD DEFENSE ATTORNEY, he went to COLUMBIA. And he destroyed the people who made fun of Foggy at school. And they studied together and Brett is a very smart person but he's not as book smart as Foggy and he was never any good at school, but Foggy helped him and he made jokes but he was never mean about it and the jokes were never about Brett's intelligence because Foggy knew he was insecure about that. Just like Brett never made jokes about Foggy's appearance because he knew he was insecure about that, even though the beard was horrible.)

IN CONCLUSION:

BRETT IS GREAT AND WE NEED MORE BRETT IN FANDOM.
