It is not stilted and awkward coming out of a screen reader. I want to smash this trope to the ground because it's clear that the authors who use it either haven't found a good screen reader like Speakit! or that they've only listened to like one or two sentences and then describe it based on that.

If you listen to computerized voices fairly regularly like Matt must you get used to how they sound, their little hick ups, and you can understand them just as easily as you can understand someone talking to you.

Stop bashing on text to speech or computerized voices in these ways. You're wrong and it's annoying.

Not only have they gotten better, you can choose your favorite voice and accent. "Daniel" for Thunder = the best 20 pounds I ever spent. The standard voice is okay, too, btw, and free.

it's true, like I wouldn't have said it in quite the same way, but it sounds as if y'all are using the built in windows text-to-speak voices as your basis for criticism, which most of the proper software does not sound like at all, thank god.

it doesn't annoy me really, I just think people probably just haven't ever heard a well made text-to-speech software in use.

I wouldn't have said it like that, either - please nonnies, don't yell at each other? - but yeah. (Says a person who uses them for other reasons than visual impairment, and works with a few developers of these things. Computational linguistics are awesome and we do our best.)

I see Overly Aggressive Anon has made her way here from FFA. Take a look at the rules and swallow a pill of chill.

Authornon here and really, I get why they were upset. I've seen the text to speech thing mentioned in a lot of fics and it's got to be annoying when something important to you is constantly misrepresented like that. I've snapped over similar things, albeit I'm usually too much of a coward to actually tell the writer about it. I don't mind getting yelled at if I've genuinely fucked up and upset somebody. Plus I learned something.

Authornon here and honestly, thank you. I've used some text to speech because of occasional verbal processing issues that I deal with, but I've never found a good one.

I did actually wonder about this and I really should have done more than minimal research into assistive technology before leaving in that line.

Same Anon, meant to put a "sorry" in there somewhere.

You really don't owe an apology for not getting a kink meme fill perfect, but you seem really nice and I want you to know that.

That might be true, but there's no need to be so aggressive about it. A lot of people don't have experience with it, and there's no need to get angry about it. Letting them know is fine, you don't have to insult them as well.
