SCREEEEAMING ABOUT THIS

Even through the decade when Matt had lapsed in his faith, he had always observed Lent. Maybe it was the guilt, maybe a way of reconnecting with his dad – but from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, he refused to touch meat. It was how he retained the “culturally” of “culturally Catholic” through his college years.

But this year called for something special. He had returned to the church that he had left – and to the battle that he thought he had escaped. His soul was walking a tight-strung rope between righteousness and utter damnation. He had so much, so much to repent for. So much to do to prepare himself to receive the promise of salvation.

He had tried to steer himself towards a respectable discipline, the sort of thing he could admit in polite company. A more rigorous prayer practice. Daily readings of scripture. Never refusing a person who asked him for change. All good, commendable practices. But Matt Murdock had never, at heart, been a commendable man. There was only one practice that he was drawn to, one thing that he knew he had to deny himself:

He couldn’t come for the entire period of Lent.

Masturbation, he had been taught, was the ultimate expression of selfishness. It was narcissistic to immerse oneself in feeding the body’s closed loop of pleasure when you could be spending that time in the service of others. It was the cheap abuse of sacred flesh, the wasting of your limited time on earth.

And Matt – he had been taking entirely too much pleasure in this new life of his. Being the “Daredevil” was his burden to bear so others didn’t have to suffer it. He was not supposed to revel in the smack of his fists against a mobster’s jaw. His heartbeat was not supposed to quicken at the creak of his suit against the skin. When he returned home soaked in sweat and splattered with blood, he was not supposed to be grinning and hard.

If he was going to believe that this mission of his would save his soul, he couldn’t keep adding semen to the blood swirling down his shower drain.

So on Ash Wednesday, with the sooty cross still smeared on his forehead (remember that dust you are, and to dust you shall return), he knelt and prayed for the strength to deny himself orgasm over the coming 40 days.

He was strong. He was disciplined. For the sake of his soul, he could do this.
