anon who mentioned the matt-versus-white-supremacists arc here: i was thinking THE SAME THING actually. i feel like daredevil was created as a type of differential to bruce wayne who almost always carried out his activities completely extrajudicially, but the fact that matt can go out at night wearing a mask and beating the absolute crap out of people is definitely a privilege. the only other hero i can think of who is street-level, black, and wears a mask is static shock; falcon is registered with shield, and black panther and miles morales wear suits that completely cover their skin. i can't even imagine how dangerous it would be to be a masked hero but also have the ENTIRE public know your racial identity.

i actually would like a discussion between matt and luke at some point about that: luke goes out in broad daylight with no mask and fights crime. it would be great to see luke school matt on the implications of not being white and wearing a mask, especially considering the social relevancy of such a conversation. luke probably doesn't wear a mask because he thinks he'd be in even more danger if he did what matt does.

Yeah. I mean, civilians are going to react in positive and non-positive ways to masked vigilantes breaking up street crime with their fists, but unfortunately, a white dude in a mask is probably not going to have to worry about getting maced in the face by that mugging victim when he tries to give her purse back to her, y'know? Whereas a black dude in a mask...

here's another reason luke wouldn't want to wear a mask: should he get profiled and brutalized, they wouldn't be able to say he was a hero necessarily. eliminating a secret identity ensures that law enforcement can't hurt him without risking facing the consequences of having beaten up a known do-gooder
