Removing Tracking Devises Questions TW... IDK what for

This is probably seems pretty out of left field. I was thinking of that medical open Q&A thread a few pages back (I'll fine it again... maybe) but realized that this question is a little broader than that.

I have a character who has had a tracking chip implanted into them and needs to get it out ASAP with very basic first aid supplies. And I have so many questions.

1.) If they don't know where the tracking chip is but have a very good understanding of electronics (which I do not) could they cannibalize some house hold electronics to detect where exactly the tracker is.

2.) What's the best way to remove it, what tools would be best to have on hand? Would a paring knife, box cutter, or exacto knife be more ideal? Would stitches be needed? If so what's the best substitute for those?

3.) What's the best way to disinfect these tools before use? Would soaking them in a bowl of rubbing alcohol be okay, or like, maybe sending them through the dish washer? IDK.

4.) How bloody would this whole mess be?

Okay, those are my questions, mostly medical but not completely.

Oooh, this squicks me out just thinking about it, but I think it all depends on where the thing is located?

Basically, the sharpest tool you can find. Disinfect it with rubbing alcohol (or anything you can find really. Something is better than nothing). Stitches would probably be needed, especially if the character doesn't know where the chip is and needs to go digging around for it.

There will be blood.

OP: Yeah, I didn't know how to trigger warn for that, so, sorry.

OP: I've been having a hard time googling this one. But like... where do tracking chips go when they are injected? Is it just right under the skin, or like in the muscle? Does it depend?

If they're embedded too deeply in the body then a chip couldn't broadcast. Too much interference from muscle, blood, bone, and the body's own electrical currents. Chips would have to be subcutaneous (like the tracking chip in Casino Royale.) Once it was located it would be easy to extract.

So, I'm the medical Q&A anon.

The tiny rice-sized RFID microchips that you might put in your pet are a passive tracking device, which means they don't emit a signal, aren't constantly monitored, and can only be read right there at the sight of the pet.

Implantable GPS tracking chips aren't much in use for a few reasons. The body interferes with the signal. The implant needs an internal power source, which means it A) has a limited lifespan and B) will be fairly large for an implantable device. For example, a GPS device that I have is about the size of three quarters stacked together and it has a projected lifespan of a year.

But! We're dealing in a world with the Iron-Man suit, Pym particles, and all sorts of sci-fi nonsense, so make your device whatever size you want.

As for detection, I don't know much about what kind of signals communicate with GPS satellites, but they do make generic detectors for GPS tracking devices so I imagine that someone with enough know how could make such a device if they have enough electronic scrap.

Of the items mentioned, I would go for the exacto knife and to sterilize it I would submerge it in boiling water for 10 minutes.

How bloody it would be will depend on where it is, and how lucky your tagged character is. A largish device would probably be placed fairly deep in a meaty or fatty location such as thigh, buttock, or breast. If it were't deep, it would be pretty easily found just by firmly feeling all over the body.

A deep cut in a meaty area is going to bleed significantly, but probably not dangerously with decent first aid (unless a major vessel is hit). With my scenario of a largish device fairly deep in a meaty area, stitches would be ideal, but a lot of injuries that "need" stitches will eventually heal without them. The bigger danger would probably be infection over bleeding.

Now, if you decide to go with a smaller, more sci-fi device, you could imbed it more shallowly and remove it more safely. Put it somewhere the person is unlikely to casually touch often.

BTW, I forgot to add that a deeply implanted device would have to have an soft antenna that extends much more shallowly (but would be as easily felt by seeking fingers). The only implantable GPS wildlife trackers that I know of are used in constrictor snakes and have just such an antenna. Other wildlife trackers are external.

This is some great info. I'm going for body horror here so I'm going with that second option. All though I might come back to the sci-fi stuff because that's some good physiological horror, I think. Like having nightmares where the chip is still in and then IRL they're not sure if it's actually out and need to check again...

(I am evil >:D)

Also, I used some of the stuff we talked about in one of my fills totally unrelated to this other thing I was planning. There are so many stories in my head it's a little overwhelming. Thank god for the prompt freeze as I'm starting to catch up on some of them.
