as someone who had never heard of daredevil + had no idea what to expect when it came to the characters i couldn't have realistically read foggy as heterosexual. this became especially true once i watched nelson vs murdock ("was anything ever real with us?" look, i know those were extenuating circumstances but i don't feel like that's something one straight man would say to another straight man in any situation)
the other nod that cements my foggy-and-matt-are-or-have-been-more-than-friends-in-some-way-at-some-point belief is in 1x09 after they've shown matt the plaque and matt says to foggy "you're not gonna kiss me" and pushes him back a little and foggy replies "i'm feeling a little something" which to me implies that since matt can use his super-senses to anticipate actions he knew either from a) previous experience with foggy or b) just knowing how to read foggy that foggy would/could have kissed him.
i'm not sure how i read matt exactly. i think matt is just far more reserved as a person especially when it comes to closeness, wether that's a part of his sexuality or a part of his personality i'm not sure. i for sure believe that foggy and matt are soulmates, whether that's strictly platonic or platonic but has-been-romantic-in-the-past or platonic on matt's side but romantic on foggy's side (maybe matt's catholic-guilt is what keeps it platonic on his end??) i just don't know.

Good point. If Foggy thought Matt was totally straight, how could he even use that phrasing? Because those words are romantic couple words, like the kind you throw at your lover when they've deceived you, and the pain they're suffering isn't just good 'buddy' pain, either. That's a whole deeper level of betrayal and hurt than just an argument between friends.
AHHH THE NOT GONNA KISS ME SCENE! I had the same thought! It totally came off like Foggy has kissed Matt before and Matt was expecting it to happen again. TBH I expected Foggy to kiss Matt at Josie's, when he was talking about the partnership. When Foggy said, 'I'm with you'... I almost expected him to say 'to the end of the line.' Sure, go ahead and compete for most subtext with Steve/Bucky, okay. But, no, they went with FOR BETTER OR WORSE. It's only subtext if it's subtle. And that? Was not. Matt brings it all the way around with a nod at marriage, omg.
For sure Matt comes off as more reserved with relationships, but at the end of the season he tells Karen he thought he'd been doing a good job of pushing people away, he thought he'd listened to Stick, so that must be part of it. He's obvs let Foggy into his heart because their fight was causing Matt some harsh pain, too. If he didn't love Foggy, he wouldn't have been so crushed over Foggy doubting him or questioning him or walking out on him. I have just as many questions about Fisk/Wesley, too.
ayrt: yeah, you're totally right!! i get that "was anything ever real with us?" was supposed to be incredibly impactful for matt and for the audience (and it was) but the implications of that particular phrasing... i mean, there are a thousand other things that would have been just as impactful but with a more platonic connotation. two men talking about betrayal and hurt would talk differently as friends than if they were/had been romantically involved. that sentence has very specific and clear romantic intimations and it would straight-up be bad writing to write that line for two straight male friends.
it's only subtext if it's subtle +100000000 literally it's all text no sub mostly, you don't have to reach at all to come to a not-straight-more-than-friends conclusion. i'll be super disappointed if nothing comes of it, there's been too much evidence for nothing to come out of it.
oh boy, i have so many questions about fisk/wesley too!! there was definitely subtext with those two (actual subtext too, not matt/foggy ""subtext"" lmao)
