And another. I was the first one on the poll and for I while there I was worried I was the only one. I think it's based more on the time-zone differences than anything. It's like... 10pm now where I am.

*blushes* I do try. None of them are mega long fills but they're something?

season one timeline

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
does anyone have any idea how much time happens between major events in season one, and how much time in universe season one takes?

Thanks!

Re: season one timeline

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on the clothes I'd say it starts in late summer and ends in early winter.

Re: season one timeline

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure but I don't think it's a long period- a lot of episodes are basically right after another.

I mean, the first two episodes happen in the period of no more than three-five days (Day one firm starts and meet Karen, that night she nearly dies, next night she nearly dies and then within a night or so there's the lead in to the next episode).

I'm fairly sure Matt rips stitches in episode three- which is where you could add time, depending on how long you think the court case took to go to trial. Not sure about four but there's definitely a short period of time between it and five as there's time for the Russian brother to be missed.

Again, five and six happen in a fairly brief period of time and seven is basically recounting the events of one night, timeline wise. I'm not sure about eight???

Nine and ten continue into another- as loads of people have pointed out. And I don't think episode nine covers a long period of time; maybe a few days at most? Eleven, twelve and thirteen are all fairly close to another; with definitely at least a week between twelve and thirteen to give time to organise the funeral.

I'd argue the time between episodes shortens towards the end of the season, unless it's right after the other, so I'd argue for at most, a timeline of six months. If that, because as the other anon mentioned the seasons don't change much either.

...Basically this is me rambling at you because I've been trying to figure this out without having to do a complete rewatch because I do not have time, damn it.

Re: season one timeline

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
this is actually super helpful thanks ! (and the other anon too, the seasons thing helps me figure this out)

around 4 months sounds reasonable to me, and thankfully even though the episodes are generally pretty contained/short themselves we can extrapolate time passing.

why did i choose a prompt in which i need to have a solid idea of how time passes in this show??? i made a mistake but i can't back out now ;___;

Re: season one timeline

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad my rambling nonsense helps! I'm a bit flaky on some episodes so I'd advise other sources but yeah, the season doesn't cover a long period of time.

Four months yes. You could argue for three-five, maybe?? And I'd be very surprised if any episode other than episode three covers a period of time longer than a few days to a week (max). The majority of time, if any, passes in the periods between episodes.

Awww, I'm sure you'll figure this out nonie! I hope it all goes well. =)

Some people on Tumblr have made a couple of relevant text posts about the assistive technology Matt uses:

truth serum??

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm having a go at filling a prompt where matt gets injected with truth serum and i'm wondering if anyone knows the answer to this - would matt be freaked out by the fact that he's telling the truth? like, would he say something and be like 'fuck, no, i didn't want to say that'/be visibly unwilling/uncomfortable answering certain questions, or would he not even properly realise what's happening? because i've been writing it as if he's just totally chill, spilling his secrets and whatever, and then suddenly thought...would he actually be this chill...

(or maybe it doesn't matter either way? idk, it's not like i'm using a real serum for reference - it's some magic MCU shit or whatever)

Re: truth serum??

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you can use whatever rules you want for your fictional truth serum. Of course in his right mind, Matt would be horrified, but if you want the serum could make him relaxed and unaware of what he's doing.

Though I'm wondering if you mean this prompt: http://daredevilkink.dreamwidth.org/1742.html?thread=3705550#cmt3705550

Because that prompt specifically mentions Matt being "smiley and chatty," so I think the way you're writing it (with Matt being chill about it) is what OP wanted.

Re: truth serum??

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
ah okay, thank you so much! yes it is that prompt. i've just been sort of writing on automatic and then i was like wait, hold up a sec. XD

but that's good then, i'll just keep doing what i'm doing :D thanks!

Hey, I'm part of a student group in my university (it's a disability self-advocacy group) and approximately one third of the board is blind. The one who is not is, um, me.

Obviously, this doesn't REMOTELY make me an expert on blind people. It makes me someone who knows, is friends with, works with, and has spent three days in a hotel room with two blind people. So obviously I can only talk about my experiences with them as a sighted person.

Things that might be helpful for fic writers to know:

- Blind people don't run into stuff all the time. I mean, guys. Seriously. Just because a blind person doesn't have superpowers doesn't mean they're suddenly accident prone and can barely find their way around. There's a reason there are canes and guide dogs. (One of my friends uses a guide dog and one of them uses a cane.) They generally keep you from actively running into stuff.

- Yes, people trip over the canes all the time.

- Echolocation is actually a thing some blind people use. Generally not a whole lot, but there can be the occasional clicking noise with your mouth to figure out where a wall is.

- Don't talk to guide dogs when they're on harness, seriously. Or pet them. Geez.

- At least when my friends first meet people, they don't immediately know who it is who is speaking after the first meeting. (One of them is NLP, the other has at least some light perception.) So, yeah, it's not weird for a blind person to ask "who is this?" if you haven't met them many times and you just start talking. It's generally a good idea to go, "Hey, it's [Your Name]." if they don't recognize you from your voice. Especially since, like. It's not that easy to recognize people from their voice.

- My friend who is NLP has been since birth. He says that, just like sighted people are sometimes immediately attracted to someone on sight, he is occasionally immediately attracted to someone when he hears them speak. He calls it "cute voice syndrome".

- People stare a lot.

- What Karen does in the first episode, when she takes off her shirt in front of Matt? Yeah, that's not all that unrealistic. I've definitely done that before.

- I'm pretty sure Foggy has the wrong idea about guide dogs--they aren't magically perfectly effective, there are pros and cons to them just like there are to using a cane. They're highly trained, it's hard to get one, and they're still, you know, dogs, so they're not always magically on point. There was an entire night where the friend who uses a guide dog had her heel and just held onto my elbow because his guide dog kept trying to run him into walls.

- My blind friends can't perceive colors. They have definitely helped me choose something to wear before. (It was business casual day, okay, and I didn't know what I could wear, so I just described my skirt, tights, and the color of my t-shirt, and handed off my t-shirt to one of the guys so that he could feel the material and see if it was appropriate.)

- Something that helps with accessibility: when a blind person wants to know where something is on a table, sometimes you can just tap the thing or something to help them find it. I generally do that by knocking on a table or chair with my fist.

I don't really know much about drugs, but I know that some sedatives make people really docile/cooperative and sometimes really talkative, although not a lot of what people says makes sense (think of the meds people get for wisdom teeth extraction).

BUT, this is a world were ~chemicals~ gave Matt superpowers, so I don't think people can nitpick too much about truth serum.

ALL OF THOSE HAVE TO BE PROMPTED. FISK THE OREO AND VANESSA THE THIN MINT?! WTF THAT IS GENIUS

Also the star-crossed love of Foggy's baseball bat and Karen's mace and just all the inanimate objects ones--I legitimately might fill one. I've never written crack before, I wanna try!

Re: Beta Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can be a beta. I love editing for spelling stuff (y'know--"your" instead of "you're", "defiantly" instead of "definitely", "building's" instead of "buildings", the difference between "there", "their", and they're"--the kind of mistakes people make all the time) and grammar stuff (though I've only got the basics there). And for any non-Americans--I can do Americanpicking too (britpicking sounds so much better smh). I can also help with flow a bit. Just if any sentence is really awkward, I can point it out. Also I speak Spanish fluently, so take note.

I'm not a plot or characterization beta, but if you ask I'll tell you if there's anything I find really off or some glaring plot hole.

I can also help with research. I am great at research. I will research anything.

I WILL DEFINITELY BE A FACT CHECKER IF YOU NEED ONE.

Also I can help you out if you want some personal experience knowledge on:

- blindness (NOT AN EXPERT BUT I AM A COWORKER TO TWO BLIND PEOPLE)
- autism (I'm autistic)
- bipolar (I'm also that) (so you can also ask me about just straight up unipolar depression)
- OCD (particularly scrupulosity) (personal experience again)
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (I'm really mentally ill ok)
- dyscalculia (because God decided to also give me a learning disability, ok God you do you)

Also stuff that isn't personal experience but that I know A LOT about:

- psychopathology (y'know, the basics)
- The Marvel Cinematic Universe (I have an extensive knowledge of it)
- ...Uh...if anyone ever has a PRESSING NEED to know a whole lot about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, I'm your girl.
- I'm a History major, is the thing, and my concentration is U.S. history, and my concentration WITHIN that concentration is Western American History, so keep that in mind if it ever comes up

Plus I'm a great cheerleader.

Re: truth serum??

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
In the context of the MCU, you can conceivably make up any kind of real 'truth' serum that has any effect.

When it comes to the actual effects of Sodium Thiopental, the actual effects last about a half an hour, and it functions as a depressant of the central nervous system. It induces hypnosis and anesthesia, but not analgesia; in other words, suggestibility, chattiness, and an almost eagerness to please, and the person under its effects likely won't remember it, but it doesn't depress pain itself. Like similar drugs, caution should be used as it depresses respiration and potentially heart rate at higher doses.

It does not induce pure truth, like the films tend to depict. What it does is just release inhibitions, diminish awareness and delay the processing centers of 'do I want to be saying this, is this something that is appropriate to say, who is asking, etc etc.' People can be susceptible to tone and to the way things are asked; keep a positive mood while questioning and the dosed person will probably cheerfully just keep talking and talking, sometimes making up total fabrications or inventing complete stories. Too many suggestions, and someone will just go along with what they are told.

Another option for the story might be Scopolamine, which, like the above, was also used on pregnant women during labor, not as a way to ease the pain, but just to make them forget it. Scopolamine also induces retrograde amnesia, which means you don't remember what happened even before you were injected... this is probably what Karen was given. Mothers in labor were given this so that they wouldn't remember the pain of childbirth, but so that they still experienced it, because of shitty reasons. Scopolamine doesn't induce the same level of chattiness as Sodium Thiopental, but it does cause euphoria and drowsiness, along with that amnesia. The way it works is that it actually prevents memory formation from happening within the brain. Oh, and you can hallucinate and basically lose all of your grip on reality. The more I read about the history and usage of this drug, particularly in maternity wards, the more I am so fucking glad it's not used anymore... that I know of...

Anyway, I would vote that you are well within your rights to stretch the truth and make up your own real truth serum that functions in some other way, simply because you can.
