Option 2 is personally cool with me though. I don't know about making it an official fest but if there's any fill people are really really really desperate to read more of, that seems the best option, because you're using the WIP as an inspiration and not explicitly taking over the fill.
this is similar to the above post but i didn't want to hijack that anon's hunt. i'm new-ish to mac and i'm looking for a free writing program, i've no use for microsoft office at this point in time and i'm not looking for anything fancy but i'm struggling to track down an easy-to-use free writer and was wondering if anyone had any advice?
Re: truly an off-topic post about writing software
Big Huge Labs makes a cloud-based web app typewriter style program just called Writer that I adore. You can full-screen it to minimize distractions or turn on typewriter noises and it could not be simpler to figure out and get started with. No fancy features. Just dostraction-free writing and a save function.
I don't really understand this assertion. While it isn't inherently racist to cast members of Chinese organized crime organizations as your villains, I certainly don't see how it could possibly avoid the appearance of racism in contrast to other groups.
Well, if the alternatives are "the shifty Chinamen" or "the organized crime people who are the same ethnicity as everyone else," (presumably white,) I guess it's less racist? You're admitting that Asians exist with enough power and agency to affect your story, and if they're bad guys, well, at least they're bad guys in their country of origin, too, which you acknowledge by using the term their country of origin uses for them.
I guess? (This is my first time chipping into this thread. I have absolutely no stake in this; I'm just guessing what was meant by the comment you had trouble with.)
I have never done it before so, I was wonderin, do any of you anons ever leave a more concrit-style comment on ao3...? I've never seen it either so maybe is not a thing..? I was about to do it but then I realized that.. Uhmmm... Better not to? There's a fic whose story and worldbuilding I really like but the writing style is duuuh...
Well, there's nothing stopping you but etiquette? Like, if the author has asked for concrit, go nuts (but maybe try to balance negative with positive). That's about the only time it happens on AO3.
If they've not... then you could say that you loved the story but think some of the writing would be even better with a beta or something like that. Or you could ask if they'd be willing to take concrit. If they say no, walk away. And if they say yes, try to take it to a private message space if possible.
And don't be mean about it. People often are and that's not at all helpful.
Damn me and my morbid curiosity, I want to know what fic you're talking about! haha
I'd say no? Unless the author seems like the type to want to make a career out of writing, I'd say just stick to what you like. And unless is just... glaringly bad grammar or punctuation, etc, I wouldn't go too deep with the crit. Maybe it's a person just starting out, or someone whose native language isn't English, etc.
I know I personally have both received concrit on AO3 and appreciated it and given it and had it appreciated. I think it just depends on your tone and what the criticism is. For example, if you see a couple spelling or grammar errors or stuff that needs Brit or America picking, that's probably going to go over okay. Essentially offering enough concrit that you're rewriting or beta-ing the story without being asked? Yeah, don't do that.
I will say as an author, I always prefer something constructive and specific (good or bad) as a comment over just a "good job" type of comment.
I feel like what the person means is that the Triads (like the Yakuza) are at least a legitimate real world gang who engage in terrible things that are indisputably awful and criminal, and who do operate globally. So it's less racist than making up a group like the Ten Rings or the Hand in Marvel or having a generic group of terrorists or gang members who just happen to be cast to be a specific race who are cartoonishly evil.
I get excited every time I get the e-mail that someone's left a new comment on my fics. It'd be a pretty big boner killer for it to just be someone telling me what they hated about it. :-/
Thank you guys, you've all been very helpful. I think I'm gonna stick with a nice a comment about story, the author doesn't specifically ask for feedback and it's one of their first fics :)
I don't think Marvel's Ten Rings or The Hand is terribly racist--hey, they made up "The Maggia," which is just the Mafia with a funny name and Marvel-style tech/magic thrown in, and I haven't heard anyone complain about Marvel discriminating against Italians or Italian Americans. They also have "The President of the United States" with no bearing on whoever's in political power at the time. Marvel does its own weird take on things, so that the story can go in strange Marvelish directions without throwing people out of their willing suspension of disbelief, or the writers having to know much or anything about the real world counterparts. Also, so they can throw in conspiracies and ninjas where they make absolutely no sense.
And then they include real-life celebrities, just to make your brain explode.
AYRT - I'm not saying those groups specifically are racist. I'm just saying that making up a terrorist group or gang who are all one race seems to me to be more racist than referencing a real group. You have to tread lightly when you do it or end up having people call you out, which is why referencing a real group is easier.
Just wanted to clarify.
this is probably the dumbest + most confusing question
i know very very very little about marvel aside from having watched most of the movies + daredevil and i was wondering, do dc superheroes exist in any way in the marvel universe??
i mean in terms of like, would anyone ever say "___ is your kryptonite" like would foggy ever say that to matt or does the marvel universe have absolutely no reference/knowledge to/of the dc universe?? i mean as far as i'm aware they don't exist as actual people but like do they exist in comic/character form?? could foggy have read superman/batman comics growing up??
Re: this is probably the dumbest + most confusing question
o.p here: i'm mostly asking because i want to write something inspired by the song "kryptonite" by three doors down but then i was like "would this even make sense in the mcu?? would they know what kryptonite was?? who superman is??"
