and we're not supposed to know how expensive it really is
On some shows I would agree 100%, except on this show the costumers made sure the clothes have a role, so to speak. They wanted us to see the devil in the details. But I take your point. On a lot of crime drama and detective shows the clothes are expensive because textiles have always charged a lot for their accessories, there is something of a gentlemen's agreement between film and textiles, but their items are nondescript on some shows for a reason; nobody cares what an ensemble cast of police officers is wearing beyond the weaponry, the clothes are not integral to the story. Or at least they shouldn't take attention away from the story.
Our guys, however, yeah, their wardrobes are speaking volumes. Nothing more so than the Mask and Devilsuit, of course, but the guys in their normal daywear, that's important to show us (or reinforce? accentuate? god I hope I'm making sense) who these guys are. Foggy has fam who might send gifts or money and Foggy likely would want a couple of high-end vintage pieces for his wardrobe (although I think the most expensive item he owns in S1 is probably his bag? but his signature piece is one of his fun ties under that F pin - for Matt, it's his glasses: put the tie/F pin and the glasses in one picture all by themselves, and you know exactly who they're referencing) while being cheap on everything else, because money.
Poor Matt wouldn't be able to cheat on cheaper items, tho, or anything that wasn't comfortable directly against his skin. I have too many damn ideas about his briefs/boxers. >.>
How big is the damn inheritance? They just say it's 'sizeable' and that Stick was paid an unspecified portion of it. I know the writers probably didn't plot out that shit, but this vague amorphous mass of money is essentially The Force (all purpose plot insulation) and that's annoying to write around
They're always talking up their connections to the locals of Hell's Kitchen, maybe he knows a top notch tailor personally and gets his suits at a discounted price from what they should be?
Ooh, maybe the old dude that he saved from the car crash as a kid is a tailor, or has a tailor in the family.
But does he have different ones for lawyering and Daredeviling? Are any of them assless? Has foggy ever bought/knit him one of those elephant trunk boxers and sat there with a huge shit-eating grin on his face as he watches Matt try to figure out what the fuck this knitted monstrosity is
i'm throwing a pity-party for myself + my favourite party game is reading the saddest stuff i can find (is this a semi-morbid and ultimately unhelpful thing to do? yes!! is it kind of cathartic? yes!!) but i need a little help party planning.
i assumed this show would have given way to a decent amount of self-harm themed fic (it is an appropriately sad and dark series) but i'm only turning up like fifteen results. i figure there might be an untapped goldmine somewhere out there that's waiting for me and my pick-axe. i've only used Ao3 and the kinkmeme so i'm wondering if anyone in this bar could point me in the direction of somewhere else to look for fic or for any fic-recs!!
OP - YAAAS! *high-five* I forgot all about that! Okay, so the show filmed that the chemical spill truck was a Rand vehicle, but they cut that giveaway in post production (didn't they?), and I kinda assumed they might show it in flashback when we finally get the Iron Fist series. Someone correct me but I don't think that truck has ever been a Rand Industries vehicle before? It's always been like ACME or whatever in the comics. Maybe there was some sort of settlement, after all? I don't think a settlement is ever mentioned, Jack Murdock seemed really concerned about leaving Matt some inheritance (why would he be so worried if Matt actually had some other means to help financially support him?) but maybe Rand stepped up later when Matt was older because responsibility and all that? And I guess it would tie the shows together even more than they already are? Matt and Danny are destined to be really good friends, after all.
The only other thing I considered was Matt's mother. I assumed Jack was calling her before his last big fight and asking her to step up, but she never does that we see. Maybe she's not going to be a nun in the MCU? Maybe I should be considering a (literal) sugar mama instead of a sugar daddy.
Don't look at me like that, I'm serious. I've gotten a lot of good clothes that way. Retail stores in the states are always throwing perfectly good clothes and accessories in the trash behind the store. I once got three pairs of black trousers for free that way, the only thing I had to do was replace their zippers with zippers from the dollar store. That was probably why they were thrown out, because they were "defective." My brother in law got a flatscreen tv the same way a couple years ago.
Wired has a really great story about dumpster diving culture and all the amazing stuff you can find: http://www.wired.com/2015/02/high-end-dumpster-diving-matt-malone/
I don't know about Foggy but I don't think Matt is too proud to rifle through some garbage for decent clothes, and he's willing to barter services for good tailoring.
I wrote a short fic that addressed whether he got a settlement or not directly, but most people kind of forget about that possibility.
As someone who did get a settlement from a childhood car accident, it is likely Matt got something, but it might so depend upon factors like whether or not the truck that hit him was properly insured and how big the company was, whether or not his dad had the money and/or knew how to retain a lawyer, whether the truck violated any government legislation carrying those substances, etc.
In addition, if Jack had life insurance or medical insurance, there may have been some money that came out of that, but probably barely enough to cover medical costs.
SA - Just to add to that, my childhood settlement took 8 years to work out. So if he did get one, it's absolutely possible that it happened well after Jack's death.
Additionally, Foggy knew his name and recognized him as a hero when he met him, so I also assume that the community rallied around him at some point too, possibly raising money.
Is there really a clean enough dumpster for Matt 'cheap cologne feels like sandpaper in my smell-holes' Murdock?
Yeah he can world on fire it, but at some point he will have to feel the item in question or smell it at close range to see if there's animal guts on the actual jacket, or if it was just adjacent to them. Pretty much every item is a "Am I willing to risk coming in contact with an animal carcass for this item?"
I did know a guy who loaded a minivan up with $2000 worth of Naked Juice but that was their factory. When it's a place actual customers go in, you get a lot more bodily excretions
