Defenders-only Discussion Post

This post is for prompts involving everyone in Netflix's The Defenders! Crossovers between anyone in the four individual shows should go here. Prompts only including characters from one show should still go on the relevant show prompt post.

Rules:
  • General
    1. YKINMKATO. Play nice. If you don't like something, scroll on.

    2. All comments must be anon. If you would like to be politely banned to avoid anon-failing, leave a logged-in comment on the mod post or pm the mod account.

    3. Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).

    4. RPF is allowed. Crossovers, characters from the extended Marvel Universe and comics canon are allowed, but must relate to the 2017 TV show in some way.

    5. Drop a comment on the mod post if you have any questions or problems.

  • Prompts
    1. All types of prompts are welcome.

    2. Use the subject line for the main idea of your prompt (pairing or characters, keywords, kink).

    3. Warnings are nice, but not mandatory. Get DW Blocker if there's anything you really don't want to see.

  • Fills
    1. Put [FILL] or something similar in the subject line when posting a fill.

    2. Announce your fill on either the Completed Fills Post or the WIP Post.

    3. Long fills can either be posted over multiple comments, or posted on AO3 and linked back here.

    4. Multiple fills are always okay.

    5. Fills can be anything! Fic, art and vids are all welcome.

  • Please post any prompts related to Season 2 of Punisher over on the dedicated Punisher prompt post, and put SPOILERS in the subject line!

don't they apply to "any masked or enhanced individual"? All of them are "enhanced", and at least one is also masked on nightly basis.

They seem to only apply to people who sign them? They're crazy illegal tho.

I don't know. I mean, that's not how international law works. It's not a contract. *Countries* ratify law documents, and then they apply to everyone.

I always thought the whole signing thing the avengers had was more of a show-your-support thing, and only politically important because the avengers had a lot of pull over USA (and internationally). They're a powerful group on many levels, and you can't exactly *force* anyone to follow the law - you can throw them in jail when they don't, but that's not the same thing.

No one actually wanted avengers in jail, so making sure of their support before making the accords into reality was actually quite smart.

I don't get why people are bothered about the Sokovia Accords as it relates to Defenders. As Civil War lays out, not signing the Sokovia Accords doesn't mean Cap can't keep doing what he does. It just makes continuing to do what he does illegal.

They are what you sign to be above board and still operating openly and within the law. Signing indicates agreement to regulation and oversight.

Important detail that it scares me more people in fandom forget: Matt is and always has been acting illegally as Daredevil. What he does as Daredevil is assault and battery. Also definitely attempted murder. Probably sometimes manslaughter. Many other more minor charges like kidnapping, breaking and entering, etc. are likely applicable.

Hence the mask.

The Accords have never and would never have applied to him anyway in a way that changed anything he does.

The Sokovia Accords in the MCU are NOT related at all to the ones in the comics Civil War which mandated that all heroes be rounded up or de-masked and promised firm enforcement of every street corner to achieve that. They are more like an international treaty designed to specifically reign in the Avengers as multinational actors conducting intelligence and military-style operations across borders.

The Defenders are nowhere near that level. Peter Parker really shouldn't have been anywhere near it either and obviously concerned nobody once he'd left the Avengers which is why he's still roaming Queens in a mask in his own movie too. Because no way did he sign them even if somehow he could as Spider-Man and not Peter Parker.

The Accords are a UN thing that apply to acts of treason and diplomatic fuck-ups and such, not low level masks or people with abilities who only want to help their block.

Well, vigilantism itself is illegal, so yeah. But I think what people around here are concerned about is the kind of treatment that accords make possible in regard to masked vigilantes and "gifted people". Before, Matt would get a trial and probably be landed in jail. Now, it's more likely he'd just be put on the bottom of an ocean, possibly in a straight jacket, with no due process and no ending date.

We really don't know what the accords really say and who exactly do they apply to. The avengers' international endeavors are certainly the main concern, but that doesn't mean it's the sole focus of the entire law being introduced.

Anon who posted wondering why people are stuck on the Accords here, wanting to clarify.

My post in no way was meant to undercut this prompt. I think it's true that the Accords could be applied. I just was wondering about or wanting to add to the discussion some fans seem to be having that are a bit affronted or confused that the Accords wouldn't come up in Defenders or impact them.

It's fun if someone wants to theorize about how they do apply or could come into play. I just see no incompatibility or continuity problems with the fact that they didn't. And I feel like a lot of people misinterpret their intent based on what we saw in Civil War.

I hope someone writes this though.

SA adding that the Raft was not built in relation to the Accords at all. It was obviously built before they were signed and the Accords were just a thin pretext to put Cap & his allies there.

But Agents of SHIELD established that SHIELD had shady prisons where supervillains were held without due process long before that point. And a whole subplot in AoS was about how the President issued new orders to round up Inhumans. Plus Luke Cage even addressed superpower panic with the guns Mariah convinced the police to buy.

So again... love the prompt, but the Sokovia Accords really sort of are a minor point to be concerned with.

Since I'm the Anon you've been talking with, I figure it's only fair to tell you that personally, I don't care that the accords didn't feature in the show. I generally consider the movies and the tv shows two entirely separate entities.

What I like and want to see more of in the tv shows is that realism with a dash of something else that DD season one offered. Right now, we still have traces of it left, and we can come back to that quality. Putting into that a flying robot, a norse alien-god, a billionaire building more flying robots, a green, shapeshifting giant, and three cold-war propaganda figures, and everything I like about any of these shows is gone forever.

So, we're probably even more widely different in our expectations for the shows than you thought, but not quite in the way you were thinking about :)
