Fill: Get Off the Podium

A little too Foggy focused considering he was actually pretty good this season, but the muse goes where it goes.
---
Jessica’s drunk.

Not the standard level that she’s used to maintaining, the low buzz that keeps her head from aching and helps her focus. No, this day was the kind of day that pushed her to polish off the half-full mickey chilling in her freezer. She wasn’t planning on showing up for Matt’s funeral, but plans change when you hit the liquor store to grab another forty and the thought occurs, hey the church isn’t that far from here.

The door’s locked but she barely notices breaking the deadbolt on her way in. Matt’s still officially missing, but Nelson went and told Matt’s priest what really happened, so now there’s a whole ceremony, kept private to keep the secrecy. Jessica stumbles in while Father Lantom is half-way through his eulogy. Even drunk as she is, she’s quiet enough to not interrupt, finding a pew in the very back.

Holy shit
, she thinks, listening to the priest. Father Lantom speaks without stuttering or stopping, but his hands clutch the podium with white knuckles and his eyes have trouble meeting the crowd. He obviously knew Murdock pretty well. Jessica remembers Matt grew up in a Catholic orphanage, and puts it together that he must have come here a lot. She normally wouldn’t have given a shit about bible quotes and standard funeral eulogy nonsense, but for the priest this is personal. She blinks tears away stubbornly and takes a swig.

The swish of liquid in the bottle gets her noticed by Luke, who’s sitting near the front between Danny and Claire. Nelson’s sitting at the very front, hunched over with Matt’s blonde friend leaning against his shoulder. Luke’s brow furrows at her bag-covered bottle, but the expression is gone in an instant and he just nods to her.

She remembers how much she’d stalked Luke, learning everything about him, and realized she’d done the same thing to Matt. Everything she’d learned about him made her want to dig deeper, in a way that was separate than her usual sense of paranoia when she thought he was just following her. Just like Luke, she’d ended up feeling like she’d known who he was before she ever really talked to him. Just reading about his dad had made her relate to him instantly.

Father Lantom finishes, and offers the podium. Jessica feels a nervous energy, like she wants to go up and speak even though she hates funerals, can’t stand how freaking cheesy it is to take turns talking about how great someone was as if it’ll make anyone feel better. She’s saved from the impulse by Claire, who smooths her nice black dress and takes the podium.

“I first met Matt when I found him in my dumpster,” Claire starts, smiling a bit, “This was before he was Daredevil, and he was pretty injured. He was chasing Russians…”

She talks about how Matt rescued a little boy from human trafficking, a whole story Jessica finds herself hoping she remembers later. To Claire, Matt was incapable of standing aside when he could be helping people. This man she described sounded naïve, and Jessica wondered how Matt changed from that person to the one in the Royal Dragon who almost walked away.

Jessica tunes out Claire for a bit, feeling drunkenly sorry for herself about how she was closer to walking away than Murdock. God she was such an ass, she’d have never done what Matt had, involving himself so deliberately in the Kitchen’s problems. If it were her, Fisk would never have been stopped, she would have left Hell’s Kitchen to be torn apart by gang violence and never looked back. Jessica had almost done that with Kilgrave, almost fled the country. She had done that with Reva.

She looks at Luke, and blinks when she sees Claire is already sitting back down with him. It’s Nelson on the podium.

“…irst found out what he was doing, I was angry,” Nelson was saying, “Matt had lied to me since the day we’d met, and I was worried, too. Here he was in his apartment with a freaking scythe wound from a ninja, and when he woke up he was more concerned about me finding out than the fact that he would have bled out if I hadn’t been there.”

Jessica raised her eyebrows, sitting up enough to sway slightly. Boy did Nelson ever have a lot to say. She couldn’t resent him for wanting to let it all out though, that’s what these funerals were supposed to be for. She took another swig.

“I won’t deny Matt did a lot of good, he cared for this city. But what we were doing at Nelson and Murdock,” Nelson’s voice choked a bit but he swallowed it, “just wasn’t enough for him. He couldn’t help himself. He… needed it. No matter what it did to him, or who he ended up pushing away.”

What?
There was no one more reluctant to fight the Hand than Matt, Jessica mused. She heard a small clink, and looked down. Oh, her bottle had cracked, a thin line on the neck not quite breaking the structure. She blinked blearily at it, forcing her fist to unclench. She didn’t quite notice her jaw was clenched too.

“—It wasn’t just that he was helping people, because we were doing that in the daytime. There was some kind of thrill in it for Matt, when was out there beating up criminals. He was addicted to it, the violence—“

“Bullshit—ow fuck!”

Typical. Jessica ruined her own outburst by crushing the bottle. She stood up, dripping in liquor. She shook her hand, and a piece of the neck detached itself from the cut it had gouged into her palm. She clenched her fist to stop the bleeding and decided to deal with it later.

“You think you have some kind of right to talk about him like that? Like he had some kind of choice?”

“He did have a choice! He—“

“He could have what? Lawyered his way out of fighting ninjas? That’s not how it works, Nelson,” Jessica stumbled forward elegantly enough. The smell of liquor and the uncomfortable wet clothes were only making her angrier.

“Jessica’s right,” Danny had stood up, fists clenched but not golden, “We were both trained our whole lives to fight the Han—“

“And that’s another thing,” it was going to hit her later that she was yelling her head off in a church, “If anything, Matt wanted to stop fighting. He got outta kiddie blind karate classes to go be a boring lawyer, which he was still doing until I—“

It hit her like a truck. Or like a planet. Matt would have gone back to his boring safe lawyer life if she hadn’t convinced him to stay in the Royal Dragon.

Matt would still be alive.

She didn’t hear what Nelson said next, and suddenly Luke’s hand was gripping her shoulder. He said “Let’s go, Jess,” gently but Jessica could feel his anger in his grip. Luke hadn’t gotten to know Matt that well but you couldn’t fight beside someone without growing to respect them. Jessica was ready to tear right through him to go back to laying it into Nelson. She wasn’t ready yet to turn this on herself.

Except Nelson had his hand covering his face, Karen gripping his shoulder much like Luke was gripping hers. Shit. Now she felt like an asshole.

Luke led her out, which was more like half-carried her as the spins finally hit her hard.

“Sorry ‘bout the bottle,” Jessica mumbled much too quietly for Father Lantom to possibly hear. Luke huffed like he was keeping quiet a laugh.

Danny was on her other side, close enough their arms brushed.

“If I had trained harder,” Danny said, “If I hadn’t been captured…”

“Yoouu shut y’mouth,” Jessica slurred.

“I could have stayed behind instead,” Luke didn’t sound nearly as remorseful, “I’d probably have survived the blast.”

They both turned and stared at Luke incredulously as they walked out of the church. He regarded them back calmly.

“Maybe we can get off of this self-blame train, huh?” Luke said.

“I’m glad you said what you did,” Danny told Jessica, “Someone had to.”

Oh I love this.
I totally see Jessica and Foggy having an argument over this. He will listen and take it all no matter what...

I loved it ! Jessica who's an actual addict (alcoolism) was the best choice for giving Foggy a piece of her mind. And the other defenders supporting her and Matt was the best.

Love it. First the idea of a private, secret funeral for Matt, in the absence of a body feels very real. I like how u wrote the priest. And Jessica feeling pissed at Matt's friends who should know him better is great. Also her guilt at getting Matt involved in the case also felt very real.

Now I'd love to see how this Jessica reacts to finding out Matt survived.

Thanks! Man I wanted to do Lantom's eulogy too, but the man's so eloquent and would throw in way too many bible quotes for me to handle. Theres no way i could have done him justice.
I imagine she'd want to know everything, then mock him for being rescued by nuns and just make fun of the whole idea. All as a cover for her real feelings, of course :P

This is so good! That Jess would do a little digging and understand and accept Matt more than the two people who say they love him, that hurts. But it was really good to read her standing up for Matt and Luke and Danny being supportive. Love that you pointed out Jessica's habit of stalking, trying to know people before she actually gets to know them, what makes them tick. That moment in the show where she talks about Matt's dad? Amazing. And I love that Matt would have never been able to lie to her about anything, but he'd never feel the need to lie to her, either. Because she accepted who he was before she ever got to really know him.

"And I love that Matt would have never been able to lie to her about anything, but he'd never feel the need to lie to her, either. Because she accepted who he was before she ever got to really know him."

When you start to know someone by fighting alongside them in a hallway full of ninjas It's difficult to not to tell them things. I think Matt felt safe with them cause unlike his friends (who he lied since the beggining) these people here didnt judge him for what he was doing...

In other words Matt is more confortable around people with abilities cause he knows they wont judge him...
