The Punisher - Daredevil spin-off ordered to series by Netflix

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s official: The Punisher is getting his own TV series.

EW has learned that Marvel has ordered a spin-off starring the viglante character introduced in Daredevil season 2.

Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as vengeful military veteran Frank Castle, who brings his own lethal form of justice to Hell’s Kitchen.

Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Casualty) will serve as showrunner.

I am really excited. As I said on Reddit I'll post here:

I think Finn Cooley or Jigsaw (maybe an introduction in one episode before he became this mad man, and Finn could be the starter) first. We know microchip will possibly be in it, and if soap gets added then that be funny.

Maybe just maybe they can introduce us to how punisher is "born" like he was in Vietnam. It could be for Afghanistan. Maybe in a flashback episode.

Whoa. That's awesome!

Buuuut honestly I'll probably only watch it if Karen is in it too, lmao.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'm kinda meh about this. I didn't really connect with the character in season two, and I can't say I'm super excited about seeing 13 episodes of Frank Castle going around, killing people with sniper rifles or pump guns.

Since apparently they're gonna be filming in parallel with The Defenders later this year, it will mean that the yet unannounced and hopefully happening season 3 of Daredevil will be pushed out even further. With all these Netflix/Marvel shows, it seems we'll be looking at 2019. God, that's way too long. :-\

You never know, anon! It might not be slotted in with the Defenders shows 2 a year schedule because Frank isn't part of the defenders, and the showrunners look completely unrelated to the other stuff so far, so maybe we'll still get DDS3 (since I assume we're going to) at the time we were already going to before they ordered the Punisher series.

DA Frank's known to team up with them. He might get a cameo of some sort. Lots of comic book fans (including me), and really happy for a Punisher series. Like I said in the first post I hope they do that, and get his character past the mouthy one. Since it was an origin story who knows.

Phase 2 I think will start after the defenders. Jessica Joees season 2 has to be also fitted in there.

haha I'm not saying he couldn't cameo! I'm saying it's possible that the solo Punisher series won't have any effect on the release dates of the Defenders member series (which come every six-ish months), because he's not actually a part of them. Anon I replied to seemed worried that having a Punisher series suddenly in the mix would push Daredevil S3 back even farther than it is already going to be. (I'm saying MAYBE it'll go like: In 2017 maybe we'll see Danny Rand, the Defenders AND the Punisher, instead of just Danny Rand in the spring and the Defenders in the fall. Or maybe Punisher will be a 3rd show in 2018. Because he's not actually part of their lineup/that schedule.)

Definitely the Punisher! I've been a fan of Frank Castle for a long time and I've gotta say, MCU's version is my absolute fave so far. Jon's performance and all of his scenes were imo by far the best ones this season I can't wait to see him out there starring in his own series instead of just stealing the show out from everyone else haha

I'm surprised you were able to make out my horrible auto-correct! Kudos!

The Punisher for me as well! He's been my favorite Marvel character for 12 years now! Fell in love with the Thomas Jane movie, and I've been reading and collecting the comics since. New comic series comes out next week by Becky Cloonan! She did Gotham Academy! So excited for Steven Dillion's art work though. Never been a fan. The DD/Punisher one also comes to paper the same week since its been digital for a while now.

Geeky fandom a are where they're at! I still have to watch JJ. I was going to start on it Sunday after laundry, clean the apartment, groceries, and wash the car. Can't say free time doesn't come in on a Sunday till a hard day of labor is done!

Luke Cage! Maybe we can add up a tally counter of how many shirts he's going to have to replace. Maybe he should wear no clothes or just Kevlar armor. Double the bullet proof unless armor piercing rounds can penetrate him. I don't know much about Cage's character. I did read the new Deadpool series that had him calling Murdock to get Frank's number since Wade took Luke's H4H.

Either way this will all be so much fun!

I... kinda don't care for it? I don't like the Punisher enough to need an entire series behind his tragedy because I think he's going to become a fascist-like myth for someone, he so has the right traits. I also think that too many shows on the same network will do a disservice to the already existing and scheduled show, just like it happened with movies (one or two good films among a lot of garbage). We're looking at an oversaturated market that will decline in quality very fast.

Re: The Punisher - Daredevil spin-off ordered to series by Netflix

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They're going to move on from his tragedy. Now it's about who die's next? Although this will still be a beginner for him as the comics are done years and years after he's been the punisher. Ennis and Aaron's were for example 30. I think rucka, remender, and Edmondson was also around that time. I still need to watch JJ. I'm excited for Luke Cage, but I never really cared for his character or Iron Fist. Maybe if H4H ever get a story line I'll gladly watch that. Who am I kidding? I'm the type of person who'd kill for a Moon Knight series.

Now, as for the movies I didn't like majority of the MCU movies. Too medicore, and really didn't live up to all the hype. Maybe after the infinity wars we'll see how the new avengers do. By then I think phase 4 will happen. However, it's not really a bad thing. Just patience, and it will come. Still waiting for POTC 5 to come out, and it's been what? 5 years now? Same can be said with bands haha.

The over saturation can be said about Assassins Creed. Now there's not one next year Ubisoft can actually calm down, and make a decent game againx

I... don't care about all of the characters you mentioned and I'd need a translation (edmondson? rucka=), AND Assassin's creed. I'm not a comic fan nor do I think that the world needs all these comics and their spinoff. That's why having seen some quality, like in Daredevil, I know for sure that having other 3 or four project of the same kind will mean that ALL of them will be mediocre.

Comic writers.

Dear, I was giving an example lol. You wanted to know saturation, and that's as far satire as I can expel it too =\.

Also, to tie in the defenders there ha stop be JI, IF, Cage, and DD. You can't have defenders with only DD, nor can you skip anyone. Even though I think LC and IF could have been combined. I can't tell with the "..." What you're suppose to mean lol.

You might not, many might not, but some people do. https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/4gz9ch/marvels_the_punisher_officially_gets_own_netflix/ This has some mixed reviews, but majority of the people are happy. Some don't want one like you do for different reasons. Then there's just random funny things!

As for comics what's that suppose to mean? "The world doesn't need al these comics-" really? Or do you mean "these comics don't need their own spinoff" because that's...ok lol. Everyone has a hobby. I collect comics along with other things: anime, manga, video games, etc. if it's not your cup of tea that's fine, but the world can never have enough comics! Lol

Nathan Edmondson wrote the 2014-2015 The Punisher comic series, whereas Greg Rucka covered 2011-2013. And Marvel has always been a large universe with a wide cast of characters with stories interwoven in various ways. It would be stranger if Marvel didn't do spin-offs of various popular, long-established characters, and it would be difficult to form future teams and storylines without fleshing out some of the principal characters (and less principal characters - for instance, we met Claire in Daredevil, but she was always more associated with Power Man). Daredevil was probably never intended to run many consecutive seasons in a row without other shows coming up and teams being formed.

That might make more sense if they hired all the same people to work on all of the series, but it looks like Punisher is going to have completely different showrunners. I don't see how any one is actually going to super affect the others.

DA

I'm glad for the different showrunner for The Punisher. It's a guy who wrote some of the best Hannibal episodes ever, so I'm very optimistic. What I'm not optimistic about are The Defenders, because the DD showrunners are doing that and I don't think they did a great job on DS s2.

Re: The Punisher - Daredevil spin-off ordered to series by Netflix

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but that guy is only writing the first two episodes of Punisher, isn't he? This is apparently a thing with Marvel Netflix where they have a GREAT writer do the first two episodes and then they hand it off to obvs less stellar writers.

I'm excited. Season 2 lost my interest in comparison with Season 1, but Frank was the one thing in S2 to really interest me.

I'm VERY excited! I actually didn't look forward to Daredevil because I never cared for DD in the comics (although obviously by my presence here the show changed my mind), and I didn't care for s2 of DD, but I liked The Punisher from the comics, and Bernthal's Frank was different from what I pictured but still a lot of fun. So I'm stoked for a Punisher series! Excited to see what Lightfoot has planned!

I'm, erm, cautiously happy? Punisher used to be my fave Marvel hero when I was a 10-12, I loved all of the FUCK YOU BAD PERSON I DON'T LIKE YOU I KEEEEEL YOU because I had me some rage fantasies lol and Frank fulfilled them all, but then I got older and as much as I loved Frank this season, and I loved him a lot, I don't have the slightest idea how they're going to keep him interesting unless he's working with someone else. Because the more I read Punisher as a kid and the more I started reading other titles and heroes, I started realising Frank is very one note when he's on his own, and he's almost always on his own because that's the only way his character works. My favourite Frank titles are either really introspective where there's almost no violence, or where he's crossed over with other Marvel heroes. Every once in awhile I go back to read Punisher titles and my opinion hasn't really changed since then. He has one mission, he fulfills his mission, he goes on to the next mission. This season of DD they put a light on Frank's loss which made him sympathetic but now that they played that card, now what?

I can't see his season being 13 episodes at all. Maybe 4 or 6? That might work. There's a solid reason Frank has ever only been portrayed in short films or in someone else's series, because how to keep him interesting for more than a couple of hours at any given time? I hope they can do it. I can say a lot of bad things about Marvel and their diversity and writing and editing, etc, and I'm hoping this isn't where Marvel TV jumps the shark.
