He died in a mysterious car accident as a 16-year-old, it's very likely that Karen was driving. Maybe drunk-driving.

AHHHH well that makes so much sense, esp DUI. (Tbh she could've been driving high too, she says she's from a small town in Vermont and Vermont has a really bad heroin problem, esp in small towns)

Also I think it's a good idea for Karen to have been doing something bad. Not just baseless guilt where it was really just an accident.
