matt vs 4th of july fireworks

(Anonymous) 2015-07-05 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
i'm not even american but i got to wondering. how does matt cope with fireworks? what's it like for him on fourth of july? does he spend the night huddled up in a corner, flinching every time one goes off? does he invite foggy over to help distract him? is he too embarrassed too invite foggy but foggy (now that he knows about matt's senses) figures 4th must be hell for matt and invites himself anyway? does matt try to escape the noise? does he meditate through it?

there are so many options, i just figure a night full of explosions can't be fun for a guy with super-enhanced-cotton-feels-like-sandpaper senses. i'd just love to read something based on how you think matt might deal with the fourth of july.

Fellow non American has wondered about the same thing. Seconded.

Well I am an American and without Matt's senses I hate fireworks a good lot. But Matt would hear them way loud so maybe he'd put in earplugs. But then he can still smell the smoke in air too. But I think this may all be irrelevant because I don't think fireworks are legal in a city like Matt lives in.

Google tells me that fireworks are (very recently) legaly in some parts of New York state, and it doesn't look like NYC is included -- but Matt would still have to deal with the official fireworks shows put on by the city.

As a NYC resident, you're right about fireworks being illegal here, but there are a TON of illegal fireworks going off on the fourth.

Source: I couldn't get to sleep until two AM last night because kids on my block kept setting them off, god I hate those things ;__;

Fellow American here that lives just a stone's throw away from New York City. It is illegal for consumers to own fireworks in the state of New York, but the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular (one of the largest and most famous fireworks shows in the United States) actually takes place right near Hell's Kitchen.

Also, I was just thinking that the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular is actually televised and shown on NBC. Maybe Matt, Foggy, and Karen could travel to some quiet part of upstate New York or Pennsylvania for the 4th of July, and Foggy and Karen could still watch the fireworks on TV without Matt being bothered by the sounds or smell (and maybe even describe them to him)?

OP here: i'm from australia and it's illegal to own fireworks here too (used in a bunch of official shows/ceremonies though) but the illegality doesn't always deter people from setting them off in their backyards on special occasions. i guess i was just operating under the assumption that it was a similar situation in america, at least when it comes to the fourth of july (plus i figured there was probably some sort of official celebration that happened close enough to hell's kitchen to be an issue)

i guess for the sake of fanfic we could maybe pretend that somehow fireworks are an issue for matt in hell's kitchen (on the fourth of july)? :-)

As someone who spent last night wandering around her neighborhood watching illegal amateur fireworks displays in tinderbox California, I can say this definitely happens in some places.

Just bc it's illegal doesn't mean there won't be drunk idiots setting some off on any semi-deserted street at 4PM

The thing about fireworks is, even in places where they are officially illegal, EVERYBODY sets them off on the 4th, and the cops tend to not care. I think there are some restrictions in places where large fires are common/a drought is happening, like California. But a big city like New York is definitely going to have at least one major official fireworks show anyway, and people are definitely going to set off firecrackers and have sparklers and stuff.

Oh man, I just recently read something that fit with this prompt, but for the life of me, I can't find the link again. Which is annoying, and doesn't help you, but, you know... I'm just saying it's already out there.
