Mini Fill: Steve/Bucky/Matt either friendship or otherwise
(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 03:23 am (UTC)(link)That was it.
Now, there they were, the two of them, being the complete and utter Irish Catholic asswipe punks put on this earth to drive him insane.
Bucky sighed and put all of his purchases in the beat-up old truck they had liberated one state back, and then he stormed over to collet the two idiots life had saddled him with.
He approached each of the thugs that must have been heckling and threatening the two dames, by the looks of things, from behind, knocking them out in quick succession, and then he grabbed Steve and Matt by the scruffs of their necks - Steve with his metal arm, for extra strength, and Matt with his good old flesh and bone one - told the dames, who still looked pretty shaken up, and now, slightly bewildered at the turn their evening had taken, "I'll just take these two off your hands, dolls. You have a nice night." Then he dragged Matt and Steve back to the truck.
After getting Matt into the back, he continued to drag Steve around to the front passenger side, and he opened the door before kicking his best friend in the ass.
Steve glanced behind himself and gave him an affronted look, and Bucky raised his eyebrows, unmoved. "Get in the car, punk."
"Been a while since you called me that," he noted.
Bucky shrugged. "You hadn't done anything to deserve it. Guess I shoulda known it was only a matter of time." He watched balefully as Steve got into the passenger seat and then shut the door before heading over to the driver's side.
He got in and shut the door after himself, then put on his seatbelt and turned on the engine, which rumbled to life irritably. He liked this old truck. It was worn out and rusted, and it came from a completely different time. He was going to miss it when they had to switch again.
It wasn't until they were back on the highway that he asked, "Do either of you morons actually know what the words 'low profile' mean? We have been on the run for three days. You couldn't go three damn days without getting into a fight?"
When he glanced in the mirror, he noticed that Matt looked vaguely guilty, but not Steve. Steve had that mullish look he always got when he was convinced that he'd done the right thing, and no one could tell him any different.
He gritted his teeth and fumed for a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Look, you guys saved me. I didn't deserve it, and I sure as hell didn't ask for it, but you gotta know I appreciate it. But that means you've got to listen to me now. I know how to get around without being found, even with all the fancy surveillance stuff people have got these days. And the number one thing on the list is to not get into fights in public places. Now, do you think, just maybe, there's a chance you two can handle that?"
Steve turned and glanced back at Matt, who looked like he was considering everything. "Matt?" Steve asked, sounding subdued.
Licking his lips, Matt nodded and then said, "Yes. I can do that. I'm sorry, James. I know this hasn't been easy on you, and I didn't intend to make things more difficult."
"Me, too," Steve added. "Sorry, Buck. And what do you mean, you didn't deserve to be saved? What happened wasn't your fault. We've been over this."
"Yeah, well, there's a jury of my peers back in New York who think you're wrong."
Matt made an irritated noise at the back of his throat. "That jury of your peers was hung. They were never going to let you win that trial."
Lifting his hand off of the wheel briefly, Bucky waved Matt's words away. "Either way, it's not like the world would have been any worse off without me in it."
Steve looked ready to hit something. Or cry. Or maybe both. "Shut up, Bucky. Just shut up."
"Am I wrong?"
"Yes! And the fact that you don't know that-" Steve stopped himself and huffed, probably at a loss for words.
"Look, the three of us are going to be spending a lot of time together from here on out, so why don't we agree to disagree for now, and if we need to, we can sort out our differences of opinion later, when we're no longer on the road."
"I'm assuming that you don't mean for us to have a spirited debate by that," Bucky said dryly.
Matt let out a single, soft laugh. "Perish the thought. No, I was thinking more along the lines of sparring. I have a feeling we'll all be ready to let off some steam soon."
"What could possibly have given you that idea?"
Laughing again and making a rueful face, Matt acknowledged, "You may have a point." He hesitated for a moment before swallowing and saying, "But you were wrong, earlier. After what you've been through, the fact that the government wants to put you in the electric chair is completely unconscionable. It is a travesty of justice and a violation of everything the legal system in this country is meant to stand for."
"I thought we were supposed to agree to disagree," Bucky said, feeling touched in spite of himself. Matt had known him for less than a year, but in that time, he'd proven an amazing ally, and a good friend. He respected what Matt had been trying to do, back in Hell's Kitchen, even if he wished there was some way to get him to let go of those old habits now, at least until the furor over Bucky's breakout died down.
"Yes, well, I suppose I've never been very good at practicing what I preach."
"You don't have to tell me that." A lawyer and a vigilante? Pretty much the definition of hypocrisy.
Still. Bucky was glad to have him here. And Steve.
Even if they were a couple of Irish Catholic asswipe punks put on this earth to drive him insane.
