______________________________________________________________________
1.
Foggy smiles to Karen while holding out a muffin for her. "Your favorite one."
Karen's answering smile matches his and she says "thank you" but it doesn't sound right at Foggy's hears, it sounds off or forced in a way Foggy can't actually explain.
"It's your favorite right?" Foggy asks, even if he's sure: white chocolate and raspberries for Karen, apple and cinnamon for Matt. Karen gives him an affirmative answer that still fails to satisfy Foggy, even if he doesn't know why.
The phone rings in Karen's desk and the moment dissolves away.
2.
"Really, sweetheart, I'm on my way there, don't worry…" the woman in front of Foggy in the coffee line tells to whoever it's on the other side of the phone, and Foggy can tell that there's something wrong with her voice. She doesn't sound sick but it doesn't sound okay to Foggy's ears. It itches him, bothers him.
She finishes the conversation, not even worried about the long line in front of them and how far from really 'being on her way' she is.
About twenty minutes later, when Foggy hears her ask for her coffee order, her voice sounds a lot less annoying that before and there's no itching.
"Uh," Foggy says to himself, but fails to make a connection distracted by the barista asking him what he wants.
3.
"Are you doing something tonight?" Foggy asks Matt when they're both getting ready to leave the office.
"Not really, I want to catch up on some sleep," the way Matt replies is slightly rushed and that's the reason why it bothers Foggy. It's just that, not itching. Not at all.
(Yeah, right)
4.
"I've seen him worst," Claire says over the phone that night and she sounds so off, so not like herself that Foggy can't even tell if there's something he should be reading into it, "but I think you should come over."
He gets to Matt's apartment in record time, even for himself, and when she opens the door after his first know her words are not like on the phone as she confesses: "I'm sorry, I lied. But I wanted you to get here safe and not that much worried."
Matt really does look awful. It makes the time Foggy found him with the mask on his hand look like a nice memory, even. There's a pinkish hue on his skin, from washed blood or bruises or maybe (more likely) both. His eyes are closed and it looks like it pains him to breath. Swollen lip, cuts in his arms, something that looks a lot like a bullet graze (and since when Foggy knows how a bullet graze looks?) at his side, burn marks in his neck.
Foggy wants to ask what happened; instead he asks Claire what he can do.
5.
Foggy is walking back to his apartment in the early morning when he understands it. Everything. Karen's voice the past morning, the woman at the coffee shop during lunch, Matt's reply in the afternoon, Claire's voice over the phone – what bothered him, itched him, every time.
He can't say he's actually surprised. He always hated lies.
0.
So, this time, he listens.
-1.
Karen lies a lot. White lies all of them: about how she sleeps, about what she did during the night, about how much sugar she puts in her coffee. Foggy is disappointed; he doesn't understand why she needs to say those things, why can't she be honest about such simple and stupid things. It annoys him even more than the itching sentiment in the base of his ears (he's pretty sure he can tell the exact place now).
She doesn't lie about anything important really, but it makes Foggy wary. It makes him wonder if she did in the past or if she might in the future. He hates the feeling.
-2.
People lie a lot. When you bump a stranger in the street and they apologize, they're not really sorry; when you don't have the change the barista is asking you they don't really feel the "no problem" they tell you; cab drivers don't actually wish you a nice day.
It makes Foggy want to stop being nice to people altogether.
-3.
"How can you stand it?" he asks Matt sitting in the chair in front of him in his desk.
"It being…?"
"People lying all the time."
"People don't lie all the time, Foggy."
"Yes, they do," Foggy tell him and he knows he's right, this whole day proves him right. "Can't you listen to it all the time?"
"You're pessimistic today," Matt decides to answer him.
Foggy sighs, decides to change the strategy, "how can you tell again, by the heartbeat right?"
"Yes." Matt says and nothing else. He's not lying, but he's not saying much either.
"What about white lies?"
"What about them?"
"Can you tell, for example, that Karen's favourite muffin isn't white chocolate and raspberry?"
"I don't really pay attention," and that's it, the oddness in Matt's voice and the itching in Foggy's ears; it makes Foggy sigh.
"You wouldn't have told me, right?" Foggy asks, just because he's already disappointed with humanity so why not with Matt, too.
Matt doesn't reply right away, Foggy wonders if he doesn't know what Foggy is talking about or if he's just buying time to be interrupted or what.
"I don't know," not a lie, Foggy can tell. Matt speaks again: "Maybe," that one is a lie.
"No, you wouldn't have." Foggy says getting up.
-4.
Foggy calls Claire when he's heating up leftovers in the microwave, she picks up after the second ring and it makes him realize that she must assume something wrong happened. He doesn't really call her.
"Nothing's wrong," he says as a hello.
"Oh," it's the reply, "I'm working. Did you need anything?"
She's not lying, she's really working. Foggy decides not to waste her time.
"Have you ever thought he may die under you care?"
"Yes," she says, painfully honest, "several times. One of those was a few days ago."
"Two," Foggy says.
"Two," she echoes. "Why are you calling me?"
Because I've discovered that people lie a lot, and the only time you lied to me you told me so and because I have no idea who else to talk and because you know my best friend is a masked vigilante.
"If it is to talk about how many times we may have to see him almost die, I need to be drunk for that conversation and, like I said, I'm working."
"We should get drunk and talk about it some other time then."
"Yeah, we should," she agrees and, again, she's not lying. It's weirdly comforting.
They hang up a little after that, she has to check on a patient and he has his leftovers.
-5.
It's past two am when Foggy's phone alerts him he has a message. It's an audio text from Matt.
"I thought it could be too dangerous for you to get involved," Matt's voice says, "little late for that I guess."
He sounds tired, slightly out of breath, oddly metallic over the phone. But he sounds honest. It's enough to put Foggy at ease and let him sleep.
0.
People lie.
His best friends lie to him about stupid and not-so-stupid stuff on a daily basis.
Foggy's life goes on.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)Hmmm, I wonder why Karen was lying about a muffin? Hmm, and about... everything. xD ARGH, I don't get why folks lie about stuff like that!
SO MUCH <3 for Claire!
Poor Foggy's disappointment. ;_; And MATT, Matt, you are BREAKING our HEARTS, man. Although... although at least Matt owned up to it in the end. ;___; Awwww. ;_; This was so beautiful - the ENDING!
