Hi! So, I’m sorry if this comes off as incredibly rude, because people don’t usually do this on kinkmemes, but there were a couple Britishisms that really stood out to me and I thought I’d highlight them here in case you’d like to edit them when you switch the story over to Ao3?

“Bit desperate, were you?” = I don’t know how to change this to sound more American. This sentence is just really British. Maybe the guy is British? ^^;

(And about the law school thing - I thought the fandom generally decided they actually met as undergrads cos of the whole Punjabi and all that but idkkkk.)

Different anon- the only reference I didn't particularly follow was piss for joking around. The rest all made sense to me.

For whatever it's worth, as an American-English native speaker, I *definitely* use:

come back/go to mine
invite him round (although I usually write it as 'round, for some reason)
toilets (instead of bathroom)
took me the whole of ____ to ___ (although not commonly)
yeah? (I probably excessively use yeah in this way, this is fine)
bit ___, were you? (usually jokingly - I'll ask a friend, "Bit hungry, were you?" as they inhale food, for instance)
than he'd ever dared hope (probably not this specific phrase in either example, BE or AE, but I definitely use dared and drop for sometimes)

so those didn't ring any bells for me. But rucksack, mum, "not got" instead of "has/have", "___ is what it is", taking the piss, and wanking definitely sound BE, although I've seen them often enough in writing/online that they didn't throw me for a second. :)

Different American anon here, and also kinda drunk and kinda trained on reading non-American English lit. I fucking love this fic to all hell, so I'm gonna chime in on Americanizing the English. California born and bred so I can't speak for New York slang but hey general American!English stuff:

"go back to my place" is also valid

I think some of the British "yeah?" parentheticals can be replaced with "ya know?" or "right?". So like "Just.... do that again, ya know, with the teeth." or "this is okay, right?"

"Bit desperate, were you" could just be "Bit desperate, huh?"

"I swear I’m not taking the piss" can be Americanized as "I swear I'm not fucking with you"

Unfortunately we do not say "wank". The common substitutes are "jack off" and "jerk off"

I am now a slightly hungover author anon hehe :c thanks so much for all this lovelies, aw! I actually find it really interesting ahah. I did think that 'take the piss' or whatever I said was probably stretching it a bit, but I'm surprised about wank! Like, I guess it does sound quite British but I'm so used to seeing it used in fandom...but then obviously it's used in a different context here/got a different meaning...

Anyway yes cool, I will bear all this in mind when reposting x

Agreed. I also had to google biro because I had no idea what it was. We would just say "pen," or "bic" if you really want to be specific.

we still do use wank, though, but not to mean literally jacking off. people say "fandom wank" for example = a figurative circlejerk. but calling someone a wanker or using wank as a verb seems to be a british thing.
