Matt and Text to Speech

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel weird posting this, because I haven't looked back over the discussion thread to see if someone else has, and... IDK

http://dusty-soul.tumblr.com/post/120145737487/daredevil-fanfiction-pet-peave

I want to make writers here aware of this post because I feel it's important and I'm interested to see what other people have to say about it I guess. It's been up for a while and...

Fuck it. I'm done justifying myself. Here it is, if you haven't seen it already.

Yep. Don't be 'that guy' who assumes it's just like Siri. Looking it up can only make your work better

Anyone done a masterpost of references for writing blind characters?

I just read all 10 pages and there was one section / prompt thing but uh....

It's more a thing in fics or fills. Like Clint crawling around the duck work coming up in Avengers fic. (But this has more basis in the show.)

"Matt Murdock having accurate opinion about text to speech."

I think you mean, "Matt Murdock sharing my own personal opinions about text to speech."

See, I actually took the time to read the post the OP linked to, including the tags, and that's how I know that the OP regularly uses text to speech software and proooobably has a more accurate take on the limitations of t2s software than your average fic writer, nonny.

Do you use text to speech software? Do you have differing thoughts that could add to the conversation? Why not share those, instead of being a jerk for no reason.

I'm sorry that I came off as a jerk in my original reply, I should have elaborated on my opinions right off the bat instead of trying to be pithy.

My brother has used text to speech programs for as long as I can remember, it's not as personal an experience but I'm very familiar with a lot of them and how they've evolved over time. My problem with the post in question wasn't with the experiences they shared, which could very well help people write interesting things, it's with the attitude (ESPECIALLY prevalent in those tags) that imagining Matt might not enjoy using t2s isn't just wrong but it's straight up ableist and everyone else is ignorant and hurtful for writing it. Would people benefit from more research when they write fic? Absolutely, always, on just about every matter, I imagine. Is op the only one who is allowed to interpret how Matt feels about things because they personally feel that way about those things? I genuinely hope not.

As an aside, Matt Murdock specifically might have issues with using audio given his comic book fantasy enhanced senses. We also see him using braille readers/braille in general onscreen more often than we see him with headphones in. His characterization can and should take more into consideration than someone else's personal experiences, and having him feel a different way when everything else is taken into consideration is just as valid.

Yes, this. Thank you for articulating what was bugging me about that post.

ayrt

I didn't get that vibe off of it, but thank you for your opinion/experience. :-)

OP

It's a rather old post that I'd wished I'd shared on here when I originally wrote it a few months back when this was a more prevalent issue in the fanfiction being made.

The issue isn't that people write Matt as not agreeing with me and how I feel about text to speech, it's that they write Matt as feeling the way they, a sighted person who has limited experience with text to speech, feels about it. And it's glaringly obvious.

I could have just left it at "Matt would most likely be really familiar with text to speech and not bothered by it's existence" because we do see him using it with his phone and his alarm clock and even studying in college. But instead I added all of the issues with my text to speech that bother me so that these people who are not familiar with it can incorporate those instead of just saying "It sounds tinny / fake / whatever" and leaving it at that. Which, as I pointed out (at least if I remember correctly) is fairly false for the character considering how much text to speech has improved.

Matt would not compare text to speech to human speech, he would compare it to the text to speech of a decade ago.

Does this make sense?

The pet peeve isn't that people are being ableist (And I'll have to reread the original post to see why someone might think that's what I said. Other than the fact that I am talking about my lived experience as a disabled person). But really it's that able writers should give their disabled characters realistic and plausible reasoning for their feelings about whatever assistive technology the character uses. And I, and the people in the tags, where just trying to help with that.

So I find the responce to it very weird. Maybe it's because I made this thread thing as an after thought when posting the more pressing, still a problem one about the notation always-a-girl! but, hey, *shrugs* what are you going to do?

I hope this clears some things up?

Dear OP. Shit, now I want you to read all my fics and tell me where I'm going wrong, because I have a feeling that I have. A lot. :-\

Re: Matt and Text to Speech

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I can do that. Do you want to link me? Also, if I point out areas where there are issues would you like me to add some suggestions for how to flesh it out and make it feel more real? Or would you like to rely just on the tags and what not of the original post?

SAYRT - You don't have to, cause, well, you might not even like my fics. But if you feel like it, yes, I'd love to have my stories sanity-checked. Suggestions would be great. Anything is welcome, I'd like to think I'm pretty open towards concrit. And not just for the disability things.

My DD fics are here: http://archiveofourown.org/users/tj_teejay/works?fandom_id=3352745

Some of them are fairly long, and I don't blame you if you wanna comb through all of them. I'm pretty much a whumpy h/c addict, so I hope you're into that. :-) Also, I'm not a native speaker, so there's that too. *ducks*

They don't all reference text to speech, do they? I mean, I can give you constructive feed back on all of them, but I would like to start with the ones more relevant to this thread, if that makes sense?

Re: Matt and Text to Speech

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
SAYRT - Heh, no, they don't all reference text-to-speech. Come to think of it, I think only one of them does, and that one is a WIP that I haven't even posted yet.

Although there's a few sections in Nine Circles of Hell (http://archiveofourown.org/works/4275270) where Matt uses speech recognition.

But thanks for the food for thought. Now I kinda wanna write a fic where Matt lovingly explains why he likes a certain voice better than others, or why maybe even uses different ones for different things. And I need to go and find those features on my own computer so I can sample ALL THE VOICES. :-D

The one thing I can definitely relate to in this regard is my SatNav. Even though I'm German, I usually use the female Irish English voice, cause I just like the accent, and I'm an English nerd, so there. But even if I switch it to German (if there are other Germans in the car, for instance), the voice has to be female. I don't even know why.

I would love to read that fic! (Mostly the one that's not your WIP, but if you want to send the relevant section to me over email it's dustysoulss @ gmail.)

But yeah. One of the really cool things about tumblr is I get to see other people gushing about their text to speech and I feel all connected to them ^.^

(OP) Don't feel bad about it. I didn't make the post for anyone to feel bad about them selves for. I made post first for me and second for any other disabled fans who felt the same way. Thirdly I made it for fanfic writers who wanted to do better in their fic.

But feel free to drop my a line on that tumblr (Dusty-Soul) if you want to talk more about it in a more private space or whatever.

SAYRT - Don't worry, it's not that I feel bad about myself. I'm just once more painfully aware that I'm probably projecting all my non-disabled imagination into things that likely are not exactly accurate or realistic, even though who really knows what being blind with super heightened senses is like?

I always like reading about the things where fanfic writers can improve, because only that will make your story better in the end. And I kinda hate that I don't have the patience these days to have my stories beta-read. I used be better with that in the past, but then I didn't write so much prompt fic, and so much prompt fic in such a short period of time.

Oh I totally feel that about the beta reading. It's only my really long, involved, and personal fics that I ever have anyone beta read. And sometimes not even then. *shrugs*

Although, different people need different types or less editing so, *shrugs again*.
