Matt's weapon of choice came from an actual policeman, hence the billy club. He chose it because it's painful but non-lethal and he's never set out to kill his enemies. Since he started using it he's customised it several times, and there were times in the comics where it was just... too much like a Batman weapon, the Swiss army knife of billy clubs. Matt has never stopped calling his weapon a billy club, even though it's definitely not the same policeman club anymore. Personally I like it when it's a fairly simple tool and Matt uses more of his wits/body/skills to fight bad guys rather than gadgetry.

You're referring only to the comics tho right?

Yes, in the comics, though it's hard to tell whether the OP meant they're reading fic from the comics or MCU fic.
