I remember him saying something to Vanessa like... not being cruel for the sake of cruelty, or something like that.
So I think he always tries to come up with a reason or "necessity" behind a cruel act to justify what he's doing. Elena's death was "regrettable," or some bullshit like that.
He says 'I'm not a monster! Am I?' He seems so self-assured everywhere else but not wrt that. I can't tell if he really doesn't see himself clearly at that point or he is just concerned with how Vanessa sees him and is looking for validation.
