This isn't about fics, but it drove me fucking insane in the show: everyone taking cabs. They couldn't film on a subway because it's expensive and there's no subway line in Hell's Kitchen, but cabs are wicked expensive here, with a minimum $5 and lots of premiums for different hours, and traffic is crazy in Midtown. They mention that Karen lives in another neighborhood, but most logically she would walk to the nearest subway station (probably 50th and Broadway, the 1 line) and then transfer from there. If Matt and Foggy both live and work in Hell's Kitchen, there is absolutely no need for them to do anything but walk to where they're going (except for court, which is further south).

The subway costs like $2.50 or $2.75 per ride (I think they raised it recently?) so if you go back and forth you spend around $5 a day commuting. If you're using the subway more than twice a day, you buy an unlimited card for a period of a day or a week or a month and you can just ride the subway as many times as you want. Any less frequency than that and it makes more sense to load up your Metrocard with money and pay per ride. Bus transfers are free if you've already swiped your card, otherwise the bus is the same fee. Matt would definitely be eligible for a special card for public transit because of his disability.

Oops I'm writing 2 fics atm where Matt uses the subway (I live in England and know nothing about Hell's Kitchen/I've been to NYC once for a weekend...) I'm kind of hoping people can just imagine that he was somewhere else in NY and that's why he's taken the subway back to HK???? Idek

New Yorkers joke about never leaving their general area of the city, but of course Matt occasionally travels elsewhere. IMO it'd be more unrealistic to think that he never takes the train (unless he intentionally avoided it for accessibility reasons).

It is super hard to drag me out of my borough (Manhattan). People ask me to visit them in Brooklyn and I'm like, "WHAT? CRAZY TALK."

The courts in Manhattan are near City Hall, in the financial district. I did jury duty there. They also film all of the Law and Orders there on like, the same week. When the courts are closed (usually in the summer), they get a period of time for shooting, so they film every court scene they're going to need for every franchise in the next year because the steps are available. So they'll have Ice Cube or whoever do a scene with the DA, go back to their trailers, change into winter clothes, go out and do another scene, over and over.

To get to a courthouse from Hell's Kitchen you would take the 1 train at 50th and Broadway and get off at Franklin or Chambers Street, or you could take a bus, like the M20 or the M13. That's what Matt would probably do. It would be annoyingly slow but it would be more handicapped-friendly.

Thing is, Matt's big on not referring to it as a disability - I think he'd be kinda chippy about having discounted fares and all that sort of stuff. My kingdom for a five-times fic where people get increasingly annoyed at Matt not using accessible stuff, discounts etc. Then one time he does and it's to take Foggy to something free as his carer aw bless
