Just stop having anxiety, jeez. It's not that hard..

Some people just can't help where they put their emotional investment, whether it's "good" or not. You can see the logical side and still have unnecessary emotions...

DA but I don't think anyone means 'stop having anxiety'. I think what bugs me, personally, about the OP's response is that it sounds to me a bit angry, like it's the author's responsibility to respond exactly as deeply as you want them to to every comment. Sometimes we authors have anxiety too, or are too focused on the next chapter, or don't want to fluff our comment counts, or can't think of anything to say besides 'thanks for commenting' to every comment, and personally speaking, the 'well I just won't bother, then' kind of tone puts me off the OP. Now, it's possible it was just written too emotionally or I'm reading it wrong, but that's my own 2 cents.

OP: I'm not angry at all, I just came here looking for suggestions on how others deal with it if they deal with the same situation. I'm not feeling 'why bother' because if I like a story I like to say -something- but my long comments seem to be putting off authors on replying so I've stopped. It's almost universal that if I leave a simple one sentence comment on a story that an author will say thank you, but if I leave a wordy gushing praise on a story it seems like I freak the author out and they don't reply at all, so I'm perfectly ok with being less chatty. Seems like more of a win-win for everyone involved. The only time I stop commenting is if an author repeatedly ignores my praise on a chaptered story, or if they don't reply to any comments in a story. If they don't want comments or comments make them uncomfortable, that's perfectly fine too. If they want to ignore all comments until a story is finished, then I'll wait to read the story and possibly comment when it's complete.

I d like to see the author who gets freaked out by long comments. O.o so did that writer reply to all of the shorter comments and ignore your long ones? Were you logged in when you left the comment or did you check back a while later? Maybe it took them a while to craft a reply!

Late to this but I'm wondering if the ayrt is the commenter who was putting in suggestions and non-requests, like guesses, on what they think the author would/should do next. Because this thread happened and those long comments seem to have stopped now, and they were the only long comments I've seen that were regularly side stepped.

Not to dig at them but it would explain a few things. As a writer in another fandom it's difficult to reply to those kind of comments which are half praise and half derailment.

AYRT,

What part of my post even implied that? Reading comprehension, get yourself some.
