I just checked my copy, and Kirsten is introduced in Waid's very first issue. So yeah, vol 1 is the place to start. It's a great read and Kirsten is a fun character.
Anon who asked where to start: Thank you! I have it and I was in love from the moment they opened with Matt just hanging out on the side of a church. This is the good stuff.
DA- Yay, I'm glad you're enjoying it! There's an issue not too far in with snow and a bus full of kids that just does things to my heart. I think I stopped shortly after that (no particular reason, I'm just in the middle of so many comics) but I really need to pick it up again. I think this will give me the push to do so!
