If you notice, he also has a gun duct-taped to his other hand. That's straight out of the comics and it has to do with the Punisher. I'm really curious how the show is going to play this.
DA: It's the like, split second we see the Daredevil suit. The lighting is shit (and very very red) but you can make out a chain on the left (?) arm and duck tape on the other arm.
It took me three or so attempts to freeze the video so I could see this. It's really not visible.
OP: Thank you. The quality of that shot is way betetr than teh quality of the video i found. Not funny times are coming for Matt. We are still +6 months to go D:
It's not from the DD ongoing, it's actually from the Marvel Knights Punisher v3, ish 3, and the story is called 'The Devil By The Horns' written by Garth Ennis. Frank is trying to take out Ma Gnucci and DD gets in the way but Frank's planned for that contingency (since Matt is always getting in the way of Frank killing people) so he renders Matt helpless with a sonic attack, chains him up, and teaches Matt a 'lesson' about Frank's choices.
*nods* Thing is, if the rumours are true and Frank Castle is getting his own series on Netflix, Daredevil is going to have to sanction or at least understand Frank's perspective in some way on DD, and I wonder if that's what they're going to do in this scene is try to establish Frank as a sympathetic anti-hero.
Anon from upthread: the thing is after reading the comic in question, this whole setup is a false dichotomy. Frank Castle is mad at Matt for doing his job as a defense lawyer AND is murdering non powered people with flamethrowers on his turf. And killing is never a sometimes food for the Punisher - he will straight up murder low level criminals or impede justice by killing people who have information because all he seems to care about is body count. I'm sorry but there is no reason to burn dozens of low level criminals alive and it's pretty bullshit to get mad at a lawyer wanting his client alive at trial. All I get out of this story is that the Punisher views his brutal killings as necessary and swift executions, despite the fact that a lot of them aren't.
Like I'm not saying Matt and his 'no kill ever' rule is always the best solution but the choice to not commit or allow murders to happen is a personal one and anyway Matt operates out of like ten blocks in New York so idk how the Punisher keeps managing to not avoid ten blocks
Anyway it's 2000's writing and art so I am not surprised it is bad bc the DD ongoing at this point in time was godawful too and I am sure Marvel will turn the bare bones of it into gold like they did with Frank Miller but.....yea can't say this exactly endeared me to the Punisher.
ayrt - I'm not sure it was really intended to endear anybody to the Punisher because Ennis had a big, very vocal problem with the costumed heroes at the time and Ennis!Frank was always going to try to hammer that point home in his own titles and make the costumes look like they were idiots (even though he says he respected the street-level heroes more than the Avenger-types). There were always such polarising perspectives on Frank depending on who was writing his appearances and imo Frank's one of those characters who's never had much consistency in his background. He's been all over the place, however, from what I've read the showrunners are mostly cribbing from Ennis' long run on The Punisher, so we're definitely going to be getting some flavour of that Frank on DD. Although Matt's never going to be okay with Frank killing, more than once Matt tends to preach to other heroes about Frank's personal code of honour and get them to at least understand Frank in some capacity instead of just dismissing him as a cold-killer villain, and I really have the feeling they're going to go that route on the show.
The one plus I can see from the DD showrunners cribbing from Ennis' take on The Punisher? In spite of this referenced Punisher comic with Frank teaching Matt a lesson, Ennis did appreciate Frank and Matt's complicated and messy relationship. He was the guy who wrote the What If about Frank killing the Marvel universe, after all, and that featured a Frank Castle with a childhood-established respectful friendship with Matt Murdock. Maybe a tiny bit of that will make it onto S2. I can hope.
