Re: Foggy's family in the comics

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The abuse is verbal amd emotional, for sure.

Foggy clearly got into being a lawyer to make her happy and follow in her footsteps because she's a huge deal in the legal community.

In the comics, she offers to start a firm with him and lets him get really excited and think she's proud of him, but she neglects to tell him it's because she wants to work with Matt. Then, she does nothing but berate him (about not just his legal abilities, but also his weight, choice of girlfriend, attitude, cowardice, etc.) over the course of them working together, including to Matt who only tolerates her at all because he loves his friend and because she threatens to humiliate and fire Foggy, even ruin his reputation, if Matt walks away from their firm.

You see that she hates Foggy's stepmom who actually raised him and calls her stuff like "that woman". (Anna hates her right back).

When she finds out that Foggy is somehow connected to Daredevil she spreads the word to the press that their firm is Daredevil's representation and that her son knows him personally (even though it makes Foggy uncomfortable). She spends a lot of time trying to mold Foggy into her own image (which earned her the nickname Razor in the legal community).

And, the finishing blow, when Foggy is falsely accused of murder she fires him anyway and refuses to let their firm represent him, telling Matt that it's punishment for her son humiliating her by getting arrested in the first place and that he can rot in jail for all she cares.

Obviously that is the point at which Matt tells her where she can shove it and helps Foggy anyway.

And Foggy takes everything she dishes out to him with good humour and a desire to get her approval.

It's pretty brutal.

SA as above, I actually read that arc in the comics. Even though they were terribly written and poorly drawn during that period of time.

If you are writing a Rosalind fic (and I hope that you are, because there needs to be more of them), you may want to read a fic I wrote which I believe might be the only Rosalind fic in existence so far (although I haven't scoured ff.net yet). You can find it here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3971005/chapters/8908675

It's Chapter 2. (The other chapters are about Matt's relationship with his mom).

My characterization of him in the MCU version of this is a little bit more subtly approval seeking and a little less willing to take her crap, but the basics of it are the same.

Podfic Request Response

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but a while ago someone here was wanting to know if they could podfic my works - specifically my fic To Smell on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3903601/chapters/8735566

I tried to respond to your Tumblr message, but it somehow went wonky and deleted both my reply and the original message, so I'm just letting you know here that it's no problem with me! You can re-message me on Tumblr if you're concerned that this is anon and want to confirm. Just wasn't sure how to get a hold of you otherwise. :)

God love you for taking on this observation with such a clinical response. You're doing the lord's work with more patience than I could afford.

Right? Some of the Karen fans are spending time here talking her up by shooting down all the other characters and some of the Karen haters are spending a lot of time trying to vilify every one of her choices. It's gotten old already, ugh.

His mom in the comics was pretty awful which is why I cheered that she's so very obviously not the same person in the MCU. Thank God we got a different Foggy on the show with a different, more loving blue-collar family who love and support him. I thought they gave him more stability to foil Matt's horrible background because it makes a nice balance between them.

So sorry, no, I'm not writing a Rosalind fic. When you said she abused him, I thought maybe as a child.

Sorry to disappoint!

Aaah... not so fast though, nonnie. He's mentioned his mom and that his family is blue collar, but the mom he could be referring to could easily be Anna and we just haven't gotten a mention of Rosalind yet. The comics pulled a fast one on readers introducing Rosalind too because you assumed you had met Foggy's mom before in that case too.

We'll have to wait and see.

totally different anon here but just wanted to interject. i do the slouch-to-avoid-making-people-uncomfortable thing too!! i'm 5"10 but am occasionally guilty of wearing a couple-inch flatform (i cannot walk in heels, honestly i look like a newborn deer). the slouch is pretty much my default though. grew up as the tallest in class + all my female friends have been 5"5 and under, i always feel like i stick out so slouching is the most natural thing for me.

always wondered if other people did it too, cool to know they do! :-)

3pm Central US time is 10pm Central European Time. That's okay with me too, though for some it might be a bit late.

I'd recommend using Google Maps. That can calculate distances and travel times for you as well.

has anyone else been reading the unbeatable squirrel girl series? tbf I've only read like the first 4 and now I'm just waiting for it to come out on unlimited, but I LOVE it and she's so cute and I can't help thinking about what her interactions with the daredevil characters would be like and ugh *chin hands*

also there's the fact that rosalind made a comment in passing regarding foggy's weight, saying that she deprived him of food as punishment. reminds me a disturbing amount of those mothers who starve their children because they think they're "too fat" then are shrugging at CPS when the kid ends up in the hospital. y'know, with the added punishment factor.

Re: Karen, S2?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, i don't disagree that matt and elektra might end up still flirting, and maybe even messing around. what i was trying to say was that a lot of matt's relationships with fellow superheroes tend to fizzle out because they're based on passion and not longevity. one thing a literature teacher of mine said stuck with me because it was so true: romance novels end with the characters getting together, because their relationship lacks the ability to burn for extended periods of time. matt and elektra are that same way: their relationship is built on the mutual desire to be in danger. to be exhilarated. the reason why matt was able to better carry on relationships with women like kirsten mcduffie or karen page in the comics was because the foundation those relationships were built on were more solid than danger or some similar thing.

and i definitely agree with you on karen and foggy dealing with the punisher and elektra fallout. i especially can't wait to see foggy's reactions of "oh my god, the hot greek girl was a freaky ninja TOO?"

i can't help but think foggy's going to end up threatening to throw the book at the punisher.

Americans are pretty bad at geography too, TBH. I'm speaking as one such American. XD

http://www.dumfriesva.gov/wp-content/uploads/east-coast-map2.jpg

Here's a map for reference.

Boston is the northern most city. Gets cold. NYC is south of it. Philadelphia is south of that, then Baltimore, then D.C. It takes about 4 hours to drive from Boston to NYC, but I'm not sure about the rest of these cities.

Technically, Washington D.C. is considered a Southern place. It's definitely not as cold as NY or Boston in the winter. It was chosen as the capital of the U.S. to cater to powerful folk living in the more Southern colonies like Virginia.

It's pretty easy to travel from city to city by AMTRAK, though I think only business people do it on a regular basis.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
indeed! anon, i've lived on the east coast all my life and i can give you a quick rundown of distances. i live about a half hour south of washington dc so here are some travel times based on that.

to philadelphia: about 3-4 hrs
to new york city: about 4-5 hrs
to boston: anywhere from 5-7 hrs (i've only travelled to boston by plane since my dad doesn't like to drive that long)

other good stuff to know: hell's kitchen is in the borough of manhattan and is very close to broadway.

typically, no one would use cabs as much as they seem to in the show because they're so damn expensive.

the subway is a good alternative but also the nyc subway is somewhat infamous for some Unique Types that ride those trains.

if you have any specific questions regarding geography, feel free to ask.

I'm pretty crushed by the idea of Matt becoming a prosecutor. I've been a DD fan for 30 years, so I'll give this a chance, but I'm devastated by this turn of events and don't know how long I'll stick it out if this proves to be the new status quo.

About a MattxFoggy fanbook

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I printed a MattxFoggy fanbook for a con, and I'm now selling the copies I've left on my tumblr (between other MattxFoggy and Daredevil themed stuff.)

I was wondering if I can put a link here, if there's someone interested? Is it allowed? (I should probably ask a mod, if I figure out how, lol)

I'm waiting for mod permission for the link, in the meantime I'll let you know that I'll also give digital copies away on a tip based system soon, so even if you don't have much you will still be able to get a digital copy for whatever you will be able to give : D
