When I heard that line I immediately said "then get a better coffee maker, idiots." Coffee is the simplest thing in the world to make, the quality of equipment really dictates what you'll get.

I'm sure it's better in New York, but in my bass-ackwards state unless he received disability benefits (which he may not qualify for, since he has an advanced degree in a field in which his work isn't particularly impeded by his disability and he turned down a well-paying job that he was capable of performing), he wouldn't qualify for Medicaid.

I'm pretty sure they show the coffee pot in one of the scenes during the show, and it's a standard filter-style, right? Because having finely (or normally) ground coffee in a French press is another way to make your coffee substandard.

Yes, I know, ancient thread.

Matt: definitely an I.
Probably an S?
I think he's a T.
So, SO J.

Anybody disagree, and why?

I vote that they just buy a damn Nespresso machine. Problem solved, everyone happy. :-)

SA: On second thought, he's an F, not a T.

As a plus, the ISFJ is known as "The Defender"! Isn't that just perfect?

(Quote from http://www.16personalities.com/isfj-personality:
"If I Can Protect You, I Will: ISFJ personalities are a wonderful group, rarely sitting idle while a worthy cause remains unfinished.")

(Honest, I only looked up the ISFJ after I decided Murdock was actually an F.)

I need to commiserate with someone.

Who else is fed up with their long fic and fantasizes about abandoning it? x_x

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
dont anon. We can help you and give you ideas.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I am here with you anon. I am still slowly working on my first long fic that I haven't updated in a few months. :( I think I was a little too ambitious plot-wise for my first long-form fic, so I am hoping that I can simplify the plot without too many holes between the first few chapters and the later ones.

HISSSS.

Oh my god, same. There's one thing I've been working on filling for several months now. I have the first bit up on the kinkmeme but it never got any attention so I've been toiling away at the rest of it without posting. And to come back and find that someone else has continued off of my chapter one would make me fucking livid. It's great to have a heads up that now instead of periodically checking up on things I want to get filled I also have to check up on things I am filling from keeping someone else from putting words in my mouth.

This is totally different from multiple fills just happening and it doesn't seem like a good idea.

What is I see the question in two and a half weeks and I say, 'no' and the person is already done updating my story? Or what if I see it in that time and it's already posted? This just seems like a terrible idea and now I'm paranoid there are things which I think are done but which someone else doesn't and will write a prologue for.

IDK I just really reject this idea.

OP

Yeah, that's why I originally prompted a Fill Fest that would encourage the original authors to take a look at their old fills and maybe provide some support/cheerleading for getting them done.

Could even be a competition, actually. Who can finish the most WIPs, ready set go. XD

You should really tell this to the mod, anon. There was no push-back from anyone when it was first okay'd by the mod.

ayrt

I don't need ideas. I'm just sick of writing it, lol.

Same. I ask myself every day WHY I chose to write something that a) required so much research and b) had such a difficult plot to manage.

Getting frustrated writing long fic

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
New anon here:

Boy, I really don't have much to add. My (first and probably only) long fic is exactly here. I was so inspired at the beginning! (When I thought I was only ever going to write a vaguely intriguing first chapter and let people fill the rest of it in their heads. And then along came chapters two, and three, and...) And now it's... I just want to END THIS THING.

(I think part of it is that the plot requires one of my lovely main characters to be STUPID. In a way that's pretty in-character, but I get really bad second-hand embarrassment, and I didn't want to have to deal with that in my own fic. Oh, well. I'll push through it, and then rewrite it ninety million times to make it more believable, by which point the sting will hopefully have worn off.)

But I also want to end this thing in a way that will keep the people still willing to read it entertained. Otherwise, I could just do a "Rocks fall. Everyone dies." and move on with my life. (Although that would make the sequels I've already written rather bizarre.)

So I finally wrote and posted something else, a one-shot that took a day to write, for a change, after months of silence (excluding the stuff I wrote for the Halloween post, which I'm probably never going to claim). And what response do I get? A request for a sequel. NO! I AM NO GOOD AT LONG FIC! I probably stink at short ones, too, but at least those are one and done.

//end rant

I'm sorry, it's just that this is the first time in my life I've had such a hard time with something I've committed to. Which is ridiculous. It's just a fanfiction that about three people may possibly read.

Why is giving Child!Matt a shot that big of a deal?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Like maybe it's a cultural thing, but my very German grandmother would give me Jägermeister when I had a cough? Also, they use wine at mass. I understand not letting Matt drink a ton, but a nip here and there? It does not seem that bad.

Re: Why is giving Child!Matt a shot that big of a deal?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is partly a cultural thing. But I think more people are objecting to Jack having Matt stitch him up, and the concomitant shot reads like the set-up for an extremely poor coping mechanism. Like, I'm asking (or demanding) too much of you? Here, what you do is not complain or look for alternatives; just medicate with alcohol and get to it! Now you're a man!

(Also, a sip of wine doesn't have near as much alcohol as a shot of Scotch.)

I think they use grape juice for kids now
Underage drinking
http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohol-health/special-populations-co-occurring-disorders/underage-drinking
Yeah, one shot isn't going to turn your kid into an alcoholic and many parents let their kids have a bit of wine or champagne on special occasions. A drink of wine is different than a drink of hard liquor, especially combined with the face stitching.

Punisher (2004) is now streaming on netflix

How do you think Daredevil's punisher will be different? How would you personally make him different? Would you want to see Jon Bernthal torturing a guy with a Popsicle?

I don't think it's the drinking that people see as a problem so much as the context. It's the drinking to steel nerves because he's asked to stitch his dad up.

I grew up with a mother who was going through a divorce and cried on my shoulder at 8 years old, and let me tell you that when you're that young and you're being asked to take care of a parent and fill that role of being their friend or support system at that age rather than being sheltered from it as their child, it's extremely dysfunctional and places a maturity and weight on you that has an impact.

IRT: "I think they use grape juice for kids now"

It depends on the church, and its views on communion and wine.

The church I grew up in used grape juice for everyone, as it had some fundamentalist leanings.

My current church uses wine, although it still uses those tiny communion glasses. (Some churches use wine in a shared cup, since the alcohol is supposed to kill of the germs. Or something. I've never actually attended one of those regularly.) But we also don't believe in paedocommunion; you have to be a member of the church in order to have communion, which means that church members tend to be at the very least adolescent.

Also, we use gluten-free bread in our communion, presumably in response to a special request, so if someone had a reason to request grape juice as well as wine, I'm sure the church would absolutely accommodate that.

(Which reminds me of a beautiful line from Adrian Plass about an alcoholic taking communion, considering "the glass containing both his problem and its solution," or something like that. And now I've wandered waaaay off field. Sorry!)

TL;DR: It depends on the church.

NAYART (but I am the anon just above that)

Yeah, writing longer fics requires a lot of commitment and it's SO easy to lose momentum, especially if you get stuck writing a certain part over and over again. I definitely understand the fear of losing quality as the chapters go on, because that's where I am at, too.

On the bright side, this is the first time in a long time I've done some creative writing. I am slowly learning what works and what doesn't for me as a writer.
