Defenders-only Discussion Post

This post is for prompts involving everyone in Netflix's The Defenders! Crossovers between anyone in the four individual shows should go here. Prompts only including characters from one show should still go on the relevant show prompt post.

Rules:
  • General
    1. YKINMKATO. Play nice. If you don't like something, scroll on.

    2. All comments must be anon. If you would like to be politely banned to avoid anon-failing, leave a logged-in comment on the mod post or pm the mod account.

    3. Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).

    4. RPF is allowed. Crossovers, characters from the extended Marvel Universe and comics canon are allowed, but must relate to the 2017 TV show in some way.

    5. Drop a comment on the mod post if you have any questions or problems.

  • Prompts
    1. All types of prompts are welcome.

    2. Use the subject line for the main idea of your prompt (pairing or characters, keywords, kink).

    3. Warnings are nice, but not mandatory. Get DW Blocker if there's anything you really don't want to see.

  • Fills
    1. Put [FILL] or something similar in the subject line when posting a fill.

    2. Announce your fill on either the Completed Fills Post or the WIP Post.

    3. Long fills can either be posted over multiple comments, or posted on AO3 and linked back here.

    4. Multiple fills are always okay.

    5. Fills can be anything! Fic, art and vids are all welcome.

  • Please post any prompts related to Season 2 of Punisher over on the dedicated Punisher prompt post, and put SPOILERS in the subject line!

NA

But there definitely might have been a very different sort of disabled narrative than there is for Matt. Danny might not understand the importance of Matt's cane, or be genuinely confused at how he can use a computer or read a book (Braille is *very* recent invention) or navigate or walk around on the streets by himself. He also might make really funny comparisons ("Matt, you're just like the old, old elders on K'un Lun!") or else ask offensive questions ("Matt, how do you have sex? I mean, how do you know if it's...you know...the wrong one?")

You're right, that would be a big thing! What I was critical about was the idea that Danny wouldn't even know disabled people. But that really would be notable, with Danny's disability narrative being one that's closer to the narrative that some people in fandom have (he's not really blind! He knows martial arts!) and I can just imagine Danny's eager comparisons. Like, idk, bringing up disabled people he met in K'un Lun that weren't anything like Matt, just because they were blind or something. (Or had a completely different disability.)

And, yeah, comparisons to some Really Old Dudes. "Oh, this master went blind too! I mean, he was ninety and retired, but he was a good guy!")

Also Matt is totally better at using a computer than Danny. For one, he finds the power button on the first try every time. Danny is baffled by screenreaders, especially since Matt's been blind for a long time and so definitely does what a whole lot of blind people do and listens to his readers at a really fast pace that can easily sound like gibberish to a sighted person who doesn't use that particular kind of assistive technology.

And, well, braille was invented in the earlyish 1800s, so I wouldn't call it THAT recent.

But I could see Luke being equally curious, but he totally does the "I DON'T EVEN NOTICE IT" thing, except also he gets weirdly overbearing sometimes. Jessica's not as curious, but maybe she should be, since she just ends up ignoring his blindness and/or assuming he's putting it on when he 'acts blind'. (I do think he might've been putting it on a little when he full on ran into the piano though.)

I don't think Matt would have a huge issue with curiosity if it's not excessive, since a lot of the time curiosity is courtesy anyway ('is this a thing I can do?', for example)--I mean, at least they want to learn, and he can explain accommodations and tell them to please nod and shake their head and try to give him hand signals (come on, Luke) less. Yes, if he pays attention he can tell when people are nodding or shaking their head, sort of. But it's not like he's constantly focused on that. It makes everything so much easier to just say "I'm nodding" or "I'm shaking my head", or, incredibly, "yes" and "no"; also, announce your presence.

TELL HIM WHERE THE DAMN CURB IS, IF HE'S NOT HYPERACTIVATED IS HE REALLY GONNA BE THINKING ABOUT AIR POCKETS??? This is why he uses the cane and holds onto your elbow, guys, stop walking (or running, Danny, it is a dog, you can wait to say hi, what are you, five) in front of him or suddenly stopping to talk to one of the seventy billion people you make idle chit chat with every day (LUKE) or randomly speeding up to avoid people who may want to make idle chit chat with you (JESSICA) without warning me and either leaving me stranded on a busy sidewalk or jerking me around and tripping me up when I was trusting you to help me out there.

He finally sits everyone down and goes 'just ask questions. Ask away. Let's get it over with. Then, Danny, we're going to talk about tact and boundaries and how I'm not a blind martial arts master, most blind people are not, I feel like you're getting a skewed view of what blindness is and this concerns me, and Luke, I appreciate your trying to be sensitive, but you literally fight by my side, I am not helpless, I have been living in the world for years now and know how not to get shortchanged when I buy things, that's why I fold all my bills, also, Jessica, I'm actually blind, I'm not faking it, I'm not not really blind, I am blind'.

This fic could be both amusing and educational without being Issue Fic. I kinda want to write it.

I imagine Jessica cracks up at all the blind jokes Matt makes and gives them in turn, because it seems her style of irreverence. Luke might vacillate between 'well he knows what he's doing' vs 'oh god this dude knows NOTHING of what he's doing', and I can definitely see them not thinking things through properly, because of the old 'because you're not a Helpless Infant you don't have a disability and need no Real Accommodations For Real People With Real Disabilities' trap, if only unconsciously.

this sounds amazing in every way, and i love how you characterize each of their reactions- danny being very assuming and insensitive, luke being overprotective, jessica ignoring it. those all fit perfectly with their individual personalities, and i would love to read matt setting them straight, maybe after some mild angst

"Danny you can wait to pet the dog, what are you, 5?"

Yes! Danny is very excited by pets. He needs to run over to pet them, and then grab Matt's hand to make him pet them (worrying when your hand is being dragged towards the head of a dog's head and you haven't even asked permission)

Then Danny remembers or learns about service dogs and just shows up at Matt's apartment with a german shepard or something. "My secretary looked it up and you can totally bring your own dog to a guide dog organization for training. This is a good breed because the police use them but I also saw a video of one doing parkour. I picked this one because her name sounds kind of like Devil Dog. She can guide and protect you during the day. No one will shortchange you or try to mug you with her by your side. Then you can get her some armor and she can bite crime at night"

Matt is just speechless. Where does he even start? It takes a while, but after he clears it up they are able to find a good home for the dog. The fact that The Punisher suddenly starts using a GSD in battle armor is entirely a coincdence.
