The obvious backstory is this is Matt’s child and something happened to the mother so the child came to him.

This solves the problems of them basically kidnapping a kid, and makes it super angst because of Matt’s abandonment issues.

Would he give the kid to someone else and abandon them or would it be enough for him to have the will to live.

Maybe it’s both. He goes up against the mob, has a chance for suicide by mobster and decides to live.
