Community Promo/Discussion: RP Comm

This is a post for anyone who enjoys roleplaying/round robin fills, and anyone who has an opinion on them.

Firstly, I've been asked to see how much interest there is in a separate community for Daredevil roleplaying! Any nonnies who would take part in one please respond to this comment, just so it's easy to get a count. (Any round-robin fillers who see this, please free feel to nudge anyone taking part in your threads to come and show interest here!)

Secondly, for my curiosity, what is the general meme feeling about round robins and roleplay fills? Do you read but not take part? Would you prefer if they stayed or went somewhere else? Should there be a rule about collaborative fills?

I play Claire, as you can see. Definitely up for playing with cast mates and other MCU characters!

I would still love to see it stay in this comm... just under a different post so it doesn't mess with flatmeme.

I've always thought of them as mini-fills. and it would be fun to see them here.

I'm definitely interested! I haven't done any roleplay for ages but a Daredevil RP comm would be fun to get started again.

As someone who has been around RPing here for a long time on DW, I would be totally interested in this, especially as a way to help introduce all the lovely people on this meme interested in trying it out to the RP scene around here.

For clarification - what exactly are round robin and rp posts? I've seen whole rp communities, but I don't understand what we're even talking about in this context.

Basically we're talking about any thread that reaches 50+ comments in less than a day or two.

I don't take part but I read some of them sometimes. I'd definitely prefer if the round robins/collaborative fills were taken to a new comm, though. Maybe writers could leave a link here (like we do for fills posted to AO3 and other platforms) if what they write is inspired by a prompt. That way, people who are interested will know that it exists, and others who aren't won't be overwhelmed by the large comment volume.

I enjoy the meta that arises from popular prompts, but when people clog up flatmeme with a "round robin" that never actually turns into a fill it gets a little annoying.

I feel the same way about roll-play fills, especially because the iterations that we've seen so far on this meme involve characters from other fandoms (Hamilton), or characters that have fallen so far down the AU rabbit hole as to be unrecognizable (all the slave!Matts).

As a non-roleplayer, I think the round robins read like minifills so I don't mind them here so long as they're titled separately for people to delete notifications for if they don't want them. But I also think a community specifically for roleplaying and round robins would be nice for those roleplayers to find each other.

I would definitely like one! I am a slavery AU filler and I love round robins, but I do understand people who might find them to be a bit much for the DD kinkmeme

Can anyone give me a link to one of these roll plays. I've seen people mentioning them but I have never actually stumbled upon one to form an opinion. Do they happen organically, someone posting a minifill and someone posing another? Because if that's the case I'm worried that moving it elsewhere will result in people telling others to repost mini fills in the other comm. it might stifle creativity. I've occasionally posted a few lines of dialogue in response to a comment. Would that still be okay?

The early ones were more or less organic, minifills in response to a prompt, or springing up from a comment chain, but the last two (on post 9) were specifically prompted to be roleplays.

I enjoy - and tookpart in and even organised - round-robin fanfiction. Or, to be more precise, I love fic relays. The format where the turns are alocated prior to the start of writing and at the end of each part a poll is created. The readers then vote in the poll and thusly determine the result of last part's cliffhanger (i.e. the part ends with someone pulling the trigger, the options are for it to misfire, for the gun to be a toy gun, and for someone getting shot to death; readers vote toy gun and that has to be the starting point of the new part of the fic). That's a lot of fun, it's interactive and a great challenge.

If we had a comm dedicated to a format like that, I would love to participate.

tbh, I'm not a huge fan of the round robins or the 'meta' posts, particularly when those posts carry on like, three different scenarios that never seem to end. Bouncing around ideas is great, but once it starts to chain it gets a little annoying. It's a flatmeme issue for me, honestly.

While I'm happy the fillers are having fun with the round robins/rp, I have to say it's annoying sometimes to see the flatmeme filled up with short additions to a RR that I don't particularly want to read. The other comments/fills/prompts are often lost in the volume of RR posts. I think a separate post (or separate community, if you want to go that way) would be fantastic. On the other hand, I don't think there should be a hard rule against organic collaborative fills - just that if it turns in to more of a rp/tossing ideas swiftly back and forth, it's encouraged to move it to a separate place.

I kind of feel like a separate community would be overkill, though - I don't want it to gain so few people that the ones who were doing RR/RP before end up having no one to write with.

If it were a separate community, people could advertise and gain more members who are specifically interested in what they're doing. They could attract more fellow writers that way, rather than keep playing only here, where potentially interested people might not even know it exists. IMO this comm is still primarily a kink meme, and the round robins/roleplaying and some of the more extensive prompt discussions have evolved into something different to that.

Aside from that, I agree. I think a hard rule against collaborative fills might stifle creativity, but if conversations organically evolve into something that would be more suited to a different community, then it's not a problem: the participants can just head over there instead.

As for simply having a separate post instead of a separate autonomous community, it would depend greatly on whether the mod here is willing to essentially take on the responsibility of managing a roleplaying group and a kink discussion forum alongside the kink meme itself. That's a lot of work.

+2 Yes, this. Modding RP is a loooot of work. Create a new comm, leave one or more of the people interested in charge, link to it from here, and done. People who want to read slave!AUs RP now have all 6000 comments to themselves.

I'm a reader of those slaves interations and found them refreshing.
They are fun tor ead and the people that participate in them being the Pokemons AU or the Slaves AU. They are pretty investes in them and i like that.

There was just oen that i read where the separate RP took part ont he main prompt post and it was really long. Then someone started to prompt them separately and that was an even better idea cause it was only for that purpose.

I dont think a differen community is necessary, only post them in different prompts and they can have all the fun they want

Yeah lately there had been more RP but they are not enough to flood the meme (imo) completely but I get what you are saying, some migh found it annoying.

Honest question: You know what flatmeme is, right? It's when you view every individual comment for the whole post in the order that they were posted. It's not the default view where there's a thread of replies on a single prompt.

Click on the link that says 'Flat.' That's flatmeme. If you do it on Post 10, you'll see that it makes the page count jump from 31 to 142 pages. That's because in flat-view none of the comments are organized into threads, they just show up chronologically in the order they were posted.

This is also why people complain when others change the subject lines of their posts to 'OP Response' or whatever. Without the subject line, it's impossible to know what thread that post was in response to without getting out of flatmeme.

I'd never heard of the term flatmeme until like two weeks ago, so I had no idea what everybody was on about or why it was bad... since I get all comments emailed to me and the emailed links always contain links to the thread, so sourcing back was always a piece of cake. You cleared up so much confusion for me!

No problem at all! :D I'm glad this helped clear things up, I always worry that there's a communication gap whenever people start talking about flatmeme.

I like the slave fics but honestly, I hate the roleplays. I like that people are having fun but I don't think they have a place here. I flatmeme and I've just plain stopped checking the posts they're on.

Question: Since it's not technically hosted on this community, do people still feel that it would or wouldn't be appropriate to, for example, let people know who are spiralling into RP on a prompt that they should really move the conversation there?

My worry about not keeping a community like that in-meme is that if I say that, people will just say "Well screw you we'd rather stay here, who are you to tell us to leave?"

Or would it be appropriate to poke the mod and say "Hey, mod, could you let them know that they should consider moving it and maybe post a STOP statement with a redirect link to the collaborative comm?"

Otherwise, what is even the point? I worry that people here will basically just keep doing what they're doing and not notice the other comm is there if an RP breaks out on a kink meme prompt.

I was in that thread, and I didn't consider it RP. We're still very much hoping that someone is going to fill it as a real fic, but we were just throwing around ideas to get the creative juices flowing. We have moved, as per the request we were given, but I doubt it'll take off again over there. Fingers crossed I'm wrong.

Well, IMO the point of the other community is not "get off the meme we don't want you", it's more "this is not really what the kink meme is for, but here is another site you can go where other interested people also go".

So I don't see anything wrong with poking anons (or poking the mod to poke anons, I guess?) to let them know there's another community. It's like community promo.
