I just wanted to chime in that it's true that Miller defined the character as much darker, but I don't think that everything that came after him was just Matt-torture. Like, my favourite run of DD is the current Waid/Samnee one, and I adore the way Matt is funny, and vain, and also stands up for himself (like, he calls Foggy out when he isn't being supportive of Matt's attempts to be a happier person, he even straight up *yells* at him when Foggy attempts to have Matt committed. He doesn't think that he somehow deserves this because he is a horrible person).

I'm also someone who likes writing the 'Matt forgets to eat if Foggy doesn't make him' trope into her stories, because caretaking is cute and romantic, but I don't think there's actually any evidence of that in canon - you don't get a cut body like Matt's if you don't make sure you get enough sleep/protein/rest, which he therefore in between his adventures regularly has to, it's just not very exciting (they think) to put that on comic book pages. (I'd read the shit out of an arc where Matt is basically just taking care of himself, but hey...)
