It might be Matt's first check up of this kind (I posted below on how that might happen) so he has no frame of reference for how he's supposed to act. This is completely different from any doctor's visit he's had before, and he wants to do well but he doesn't know how. And without any idea of what's going to happen to him, he can't prepare himself mentally which leaves him floundering and his senses overwhelm him.
