Minimill: Stronger Now

“He did what?”

Foggy was upset, heart pounding, blood pressure and respiration through the roof. The temperature of his skin had increased a good through degrees and judging by the slight increase in the humidity level of the room combined with the scent of perspiration, he was sweating profusely.

“Foggy, it’s not…” Matt started, but broke off, trying to find the words to express what he wanted to say. He should be able to do this, he was good at this, always had been. At school he had gained a reputation for being able to talk himself out of anything, and he had only increased his prowess in law school. Faced with Foggy’s distress, all his words fled leaving him helpless and floundering.

Foggy got to his feet and resumed his pacing, back and rote across the room, following the exact same route again and again. Matt followed him with every one of his senses, hearing his footsteps as well as his moving heartbeat, feeling the differences in the air current was he walked, smelling that unmistakable scent that was Foggy. Tasting tears in the air.

“He helped me,” Matt said. “I'm stronger now. You don’t understand, you can’t possibly understand. My eyes were as good as useless anyway, but I’d been relying on them for so long it was impossible to break the habit. He just… took away the temptation.”

“The temptation to see.” Foggy spat the words at him, still pacing, heart pounding out a frighteningly fast rhythm. “He took your sight from you, Matt. I don’t care how much it was damaged, if you were relying on it at all, that means it was usable. He blinded you.”

Matt didn’t say anything. What else could he say?

“I’m going to kill him,” Foggy said. His voice had something in it that Matt had never heard from him before, something dangerous. Something almost frightening. “If I ever see him, he’s going to die for this.”

Foggy sounded so certain that Matt almost believed him.
