SO....

Why is Candace Nelson the fandon's self insert character?

I thought that was Foggy? Or even Darcy?

Honestly, I haven't seen too much of Candace in fic beyond the 'this is Foggy's sister' element.

If anything, she is like the basic yeast bread of this fandom. Basic and you add what you need. All the perks of an OC and all the perks of a Canon character.

i think that for a chunk of the fandom she's a blank canvas, totally easy to project your idealised self onto.

i've not gotten around to writing for daredevil yet (self-motivation is not my strong suit, someone hit me) but the only knowledge i have of candace is (as someone who has not read the comics in any in-depth capacity) "foggy has a canon sister named candace who is a few years younger" and i feel like that might be true for other people in this fandom too. that wide-spread limited knowledge of a canon character makes her the perfect place for a self-insert.

I haven't read the comics, but from what I heard of canon!Candace, she was basically a very minor character with little to no personality, right? If that's true, I can see why people use her however they want to.

Self-insert, though? That's a rather big assumption, and an uncharitable one to boot.

+1

(like how rude? I haven't read any fanfic with this character but fandom really needs to fuck off about the whole self-insert / marry sue thing because fucking really??? Lay off, only the author know why they wrote a character or needed a character and so forth. Like there is so much fanfic I haven't written because it would have involved an OC and I know fandom loves to shit on those. This kind of sentiment really bugs me so I'm glad to see you calling it out when I didn't have the words to. )

I remember her showing up at Foggy's marriage in the Frank Miller era. Apparently she was very forward and had a crush on Matt.

Where are all these fics with Candace in them? lol ;-)

You want self-inserts, look no further than all the God-awful Reader fic that's taking over Ao3.

Re: SO....

At least X/Reader is much easier to blacklist/skip than always having to start a fic to figure out if a certain character has turned into a self-insert or not.

Re: the question: I second three anon above. I also know nothing about Candace apart from the fact she's his sister and I never read a fic sheer she seemed self-inserty. It's just easy to give her any personality the plot requires.

Wait, does ao3 have a blacklist function?!

It doesn't but there's a external script for that: http://quietgames.tumblr.com/post/75235075885/how-to-ao3-savior-an-updated-tutorial
(It's really easy to install and veeeeery helpful)

You can choose to exclude certain tags in your searches. If you type in a hyphen and then the tag you want to exclude, then it will get rid of all of those fics.

For example "-Reader" Should get rid of a lot of self-insert fics if you're searching through a fandom or tags for fics.

Where am I supposed to type that? I've tried both in other tags and search within results and it turns up a "0 works" search result every time.

Go to the "search with in results" section and use the minus character then what ever collection of words you don't want to see. Use "" if it's a phrase.

I don't understand how people don't know this. I figured it out as soon as I hoped on AO3 and I've been telling fans much older and wiser than me about it for years now it seems.

*shrugs*

way simpler than a plug in. It's also how I find a lot of the fics I rec since I can get so exact in my search results.

You certainly are smart, anon! Yes, irl I'd like to be your friend so you could teach me how to be less dumb and inefficient. I'm sure your irl friends appreciate how selfless you are.
