i live for foggy calling matt "matty" (i would probably die if it happened in canon tbh) because it's very much a term of endearment. i think it's less bothersome because it's a natural nickname, if that makes sense?? i could definitely see foggy using it when he's worried about matt or as a thing of genuine affection. i think it's more impactful if it's only used occasionally, too.

i have a friend named matt who is called "matty" sometimes. generally it only happens during emotionally-charged situations or as an affectionate thing, it's not really an all-the-time kind of nickname.

pet names are what really grind my gears. i've read a few matt/foggy fics where foggy called matt "handsome duck" or just "duck" and matt called foggy "foggy bear" or just "bear" they never just called each other matt or foggy. i'm not an angry person but the oversaturation of nicknames/pet names drives me up the wall.
