Re: itt: daredevil 18 SCREAMS INTO THE DISTANCE

Charles Soule being an actual freakin' practicing lawyer when he's not writing comics (overachiever much, lol) fills me with faith that he's made that choice for an interesting artistic reason and that it will probably be one of the better portrayals of Matt Murdock as a lawyer that we ever see. That was certainly the case with She-Hulk.

And re: the Secret Wars reset, I'm actually more interested to see what will happen because it means that Waid may get to actually tell a complete story and *gasp* end the story of 616 Matt altogether if he wants. Which is actually a huge deal and means for all we know he could kill them all!

That's so insane to me because when else would you ever get to do that? And you have to admit that 616 Matt's life story has become an unrelenting storm of tragedies at this point. If the plan is to go back to a darker DD would we really wanna do that to him? Yikes.

Soule could be doing it for interesting artistic reasons, or he could be doing it because of personal bias. I have no idea.

I just know that we live in a nation where the criminal justice system is hugely stacked against the accused, where people die in jail awaiting trial for misdemeanors because they can't meet bail, where shows like Law & Order lionize prosecutors and law enforcement - even glorifying brutality.

It's so rare to get good-guy defenders in fiction. Instead you get slimeballs like Saul Goodman. And now they're taking one of those good guy defenders away from us. And I don't like it. I'm willing to give it a chance. I'm willing to be won over. But I think Matt Murdock as a defense attorney was important and I don't like that we're losing that.

Thank you for saying this in a much classier way than I would have.
Yeah, it's just someone venting and at least they have enthusiasm for the work and blah blah blah but the fact is that sometimes 'enthusiasm' crosses the line into 'entitlement'.
I really hate when my love and enthusiasm for writing is squashed because someone got carried away and started treating me badly for not writing at the pace they want.

Lost Prompt: Melvin helping Matt clean his costume

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
The original prompt was just about Matt occasionally having accidents, but the comments ended up talking about him wetting in the Daredevil suit and having to ask Melvin for help cleaning it.

I'm pretty sure it was somewhere around round 4 or 5

Thanks in advance for any help

the above comment is exactly why i am concerned about this. i'm totally willing to read the new book by soule, i think something interesting could be done if matt uses his daredevilling to help people who are innocent, but i REALLY question the timing of this considering the criminal justice system + how suspects are treated is a hot button issue right now, and matt was LITERALLY anti-police brutality in past stories (in volume three he literally takes on a unit of racist cops who are determined to murder the person he was defending along with others).

i just don't know if taking a character who symbolized justice for the unheard and making him work for that same system that harmed people he's defended in the past is A Good Idea.

Catholic: Asking someone to bow their heads and make someone recieve Jesus as their savior is a very Protestant evangelical thing to do. I say this not in a derogatory way but it has happened to me when I was seeing what other churches were like when I was very young. It takes a really long time to convert to Catholicism in the twenty-first century so nobody is gonna ask you to convert during mass.

Hi! I'm working on Blackening Sky 2 and it's long, and my beta has had to bow out for life/work reasons.

Blackening Sky 2 is currently 42K, will probably be around 60K at the end. I'd like to start posting in the new few weeks, and I keep to a pretty regular schedule, so things need to be done ahead. I just can't find my own typos.

Question: Matt's abilities

(Anonymous) 2015-09-01 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Would he be able to tell where somebody was injured? Either exactly or at least a general 'that person must be bleeding somewhere on their upper body'? Or would he just know that somebody had an injury? Also: would he be able to tell if somebody has more than one (minor) wound?

Has there perhaps ever been something in the comics about it (though I'm guessing there would be a certain amount of abilities as the plot demands going on...) Or has anybody any thoughts about it?
I'm thinking not of fresh injuries but the day after with everything already cleaned and stitched up if that makes a difference.

Re: Question: Matt's abilities

(Anonymous) 2015-09-01 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Assuming he's at least at arm's length and not specifically looking for injuries: personally, I would think that he could smell the antiseptic and blood of recent-ish minor wounds and infer that someone was injured, but not with certainty, and not /exactly/ where. With stitches, he might be able to hear the way clothing catches on them (or on the bandage covering them), and that would certainly pinpoint them.

The better he knows the person, the more likely I think it would be that he could tell that something was wrong and be able to figure out the specifics a little better. With Foggy, for instance, if he had a torso injury that made deep breaths uncomfortable, Matt would certainly notice that he was breathing a bit more shallowly that usual, or he could pick up slight differences in he gait, but with someone he doesn't have a "default" for, it would be harder for him to know what was outside of their normal.

Pretty much this. Like, I have a 40hr/week job, a chronic disabling illness to deal with, not to mention family and friends whose obligations need to be met. I have a life and I am trying my best. I don't appreciate the harassment.

Thanks! That's mostly what I would have assumed as well though I didn't think of the fact that it would make a difference if he knew somebody better.

Minor Character Fic Fest Deadline

[personal profile] enthusiasmgirl 2015-09-01 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
A note to everyone considering participating in the Minor Character Fic Fest - the deadline has been extended until September 15th!

Remember that the minimum word count is only 1000 words to enter, and it does NOT have to be based off of a specific prompt on the meme. There is a generic prompt that the mod was nice enough to provide so that anyone, no matter where their inspiration came from, can enter.

Also, if you're looking for inspiration, there are tons of specific prompts re-posted on the challenge board designed to help you out!

Happy writing, everyone! :D

So I only got into this series recently (although I've now watched the entire run three times -- oh, how fast they fall), and I wondered if anybody can tell me more about the man Stick was speaking to at the end of his eponymous episode. Scarred back to camera, major muscles, discussion of the coming war and gates opening? Possibly related to whatever Black Sky was besides a young boy?

Anyone?

Also, because I've seen people referring to it as a "language" -- Braille is a way of writing an alphabet. You can use the letters to make words in any language. In contrast, American Sign Language is truly a language -- unique vocabulary and syntax that isn't a one-for-one conversion of English to gesture.

My guess is that scarred dude is the leader of the hand or the chaste (whichever one Stick is in).

Calling all Frank Castle fans

(Anonymous) 2015-09-02 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I know you're out there, other Frank comic bookers, hear my cry.

Anyway! I need characterization help! I'm noodling with the "Frank married Matt instead of Maria" prompt (found here: https://daredevilkink.dreamwidth.org/3230.html?thread=7495582#cmt7495582) and I wondered about Frank's characterization wrt to Matt and their little niblings.

I read through the first half of Rucka's Punisher run and holy crap is Frank compelling there. He doesn't make excuses for himself or for what he's doing: he's just going out and doing it, consequences be damned. (Also holy fuck I read the Omega Drive and is it just me or is Matt just really...tender to Frank, in his Matt-like way? He straight up tells Spidey that he trusts Frank. On a case by case basis but Matt is still 100% comfortable with Frank pointing a gun at him?????) And I find this fascinating and I think that's the characterization I would use in this fill. Frank being ice cold and driven, and only interested in The War.

Here's the thing, someone in the prompt thread really smartly pointed out that Frank wouldn't be alone in an AU like this. He would have a support system in Foggy. Furthermore, Matt is a very capable person, even if Frank never knew that (he's just smugly proud of his ripped af babe of a husband) so of course, when Matt got taken by the mob he beat the shit out of them and escaped. So what happens? When Frank tracks them all down they all tell him the same thing: the blind guy parkoured away and we never saw him again. And I doubt Frank could ever let himself believe that but it gnaws at him all the same.

So, Frank fans, I wonder what this would change about Frank? I think he'll still be a ruthless murder machine intent on his war. I also think that he never got the closure over Matt that he got with Maria. There's a tiny wretched part of himself that just wants Matt to be alive, that hopes he's still alive out there somewhere, trying to find his way home.

What do you guys think?

And I don't want to miss out on great writers who might decide not to post their work just because other readers get pissy/entitled about WIPs.

Re: Calling all Frank Castle fans

(Anonymous) 2015-09-02 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
!!! OMG, I am the OP of that prompt. So glad somebody is interested!

I think that the circumstances of Matt's disappearance and of Frank's subsequent interrogations would have a lot to do with how much hope Frank would be willing to entertain. (Perhaps, if you're incorporating this into TV!Canon timeline, Fisk or one of his associates is the one who's responsible for Matt's disappearance? And then the Punisher is the one who takes down the empire instead of Daredevil?)

On the one hand, the kids are dead, and anybody willing to kill kids is probably willing to kill a blind man, even if they take him away to torture him for information first (which seems like the most reasonable assumption to make for why they would take him in the first place).

But then, the fact is that Frank's never been able to find a body, even though he's tracked down everyone who was involved and searched every location they gave him. He also might have picked up a few things over the years from Matt about interrogation and evidence: he would know that two witnesses independently corroborating a detail makes that detail a lot more likely to be true. And his witnesses corroborate an awful lot of details about Matt's "escape"... especially when they've got bullets in half of their limbs. That all points strongly in the direction that he was still alive when the mob lost him. But where did he go after that? So, in that scenario, Frank would probably be driven by the hope of finding Matt: he kills criminals along the way, but his primary goal is always to find more information about what happened that day in Central Park.

On the other hand, it could be that Frank can't get to the people involved before they're silenced, or else he gets to them, but almost none of them talk, or some of them lie. Maybe some say he escaped, while others say he was dumped in the river; and really, if you don't have a built-in lie detector, which one of those stories are you more likely to believe from a mob hitman? (Hint: Probably the one involving cement shoes.) This way, I think that it would be more likely that Frank would try to crush down any hope that he occasionally feels, and when he comes across more evidence that might point to Matt's survival (*coughDaredevilcough*), he's less likely to really take it seriously because of that.

Hope this helps--I'll be here for further questions, if you have them.

Marci's role

Could anyone please fill me in on how marci helped bring down Fisk? :3

Re: Marci's role

From what I recall she snuck documents and papers relating to Fisk and Owlsley out of L&Z, among which was the document with which Karen discovered the location of the property Hoffman was being kept so Matt could go convince him to testify against Fisk.

I don't think they would have found Hoffman without her help which was key in bringing Fisk down.
